Ellis’ signature horizontal lines and animated colors in his Currents and Dash series harmoniously converge with the newly introduced Organic series of blossomy motifs painted over collaged paper elements. His method of painting with this wax-based medium involves a lengthy process of alternating layers of encaustic, oil, acrylic, and collage to create striking textural surfaces and entrancing abstract imagery.

Peter Millett: Wall Sculpture

Millett has spent the majority of his career making large scale metal sculptures that explore the abstraction of both figurative movement and geometry. However, many of these complex creations start from ideas hashed out in wood, small scale, with vibrant monochromatic color schemes. This exhibition presents a collection of these small wooden sculptures for the wall and pedestal. Each piece has a dynamic compositional element that inspires visual interest and translates to the monumental, yet was made for an intimate view.

Based in Seattle WA, Millett has exhibited widely over the past 30 plus years. With family in Santa Fe, Chiaroscuro has become his home-away-from-home gallery and has helped develop a significant local following. This is Millett's second solo exhibition at Chiaroscuro.

These two art renegades are a couple of the only living and working artists connected to the heyday of Santa Fe Native American painters in the 1960’s-70’s, when art luminaries such as Fritz Scholder, T.C. Cannon, and Earl Biss developed a movement, aesthetic and market for contemporary Native American painting that completely broke free from the representational past of traditional “Indian Art.” Maurice Burns was introduced to this group of painters, who had high regard for his work, when he accepted a position at IAIA to set up its Visiting Artists Program. Maurice’s current work continues to express his figurative underpinnings, yet he pushes his exploration into the unknown as an art visionary with a strong connection to RB Kitai. Billy Warsoldier is in town and his work and personality are uncontainable. This preview of his new and past work offers a glimpse into how fierce and soulful painting can be, building up to an August exhibition free for all that is sure to make some waves locally and nationally.

Maggie Taylor + Henrieke Strecker

Henrieke I. Strecker has her roots in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany. Her formative and creative years were spent there, and later in Berlin and Frankfurt. In 2008 she relocated to the United States and currently resides and works in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

She has spent her lifetime in photography and alternative photographic techniques. Henrieke’s work appears in photographic journals, catalogues, blogs and in books on photographic practices. She teaches The Art of Photography (analog photography) &Historic Photographic Processes at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.

Henrieke Strecker’s photogravures and mixed media images rarely have titles. It is her goal to entice the viewer to become an active observer, to respond to the image so as to find his or her own meaning---presumably a new and very personal tale. Thus, she doesn’t document an isolated moment as a documentary photographer would nor does she paint a realistic picture, for Henrieke, this type of photographic rendition is too much like a report. Instead, she gives an account of small movements and atmospheres thereby sharing her experience with the viewer. Her technique requires her to remain still, in her own yard, in one place, and quietly allow her perceptions to emerge --- "to go deeper - unearthing, layer after layer, exposing the fields of vision hidden well beneath the surface." The core of her work is both visual and graphic, simplicity derived from her natural surroundings.

Maggie Taylor is exhibiting both new work and a selection of images from No Ordinary Days, her recent book that is a survey for Maggie’s art for the period 1998 through 2012. Maggie continues her characteristic style of scanning and enhancing daguerreotypes, tintypes, figurines, illustrations and photographs for which she then creates surrealistic settings for the featured portrait.

The portraits that Maggie uses for her photomontages, the daguerreotypes and the tintypes, are 19th Century pictures. The technical limitations of the medium at the time, the "film" that captured the subject of the photographs, was slow, not very light sensitive. Often the taking of a picture took several seconds, even minutes. While the lens cap was removed from the camera the photographic subjects were required to sit or stand, perfectly motionless, until the lens cap was replaced on the camera. Photographers used specially made props such as the Brady Stand, a 19th century factory made cast iron side table to act as a prop and to assist the subject to be still. Photographers also learned that a smile was always in motion. Pictures of those who smiled rendered the face blurred and the photo was useless. Hence, the portrait subject was admonished not to move, not to smile, not to blink, and, most importantly, not to change their expression. The subjects dressed for this special occasion presenting themselves for the camera in their best, probably their only formal wear. The clothing was dark, often black, creating a setting that had a funereal air or suggesting the subject was suffering some anguish or discomfort. If the photograph was taken in a studio there would be props, such as a table, sofas, stools, and chair, and perhaps a backdrop, a pastoral setting of trees or the like as the hand painted backdrops found on a stage. Rarely does anyone know the name of the person who was photographed. That identity has long been lost to posterity. Finally, the print made of the subject was totally without color, ashen --- just shades of gray. Consequently, these 19th Century portraits took on a stilted stoic and stiff expression, and worst of all, they were gray. No one ever looked happy; they couldn’t smile. In her book, Maggie Taylor’s Landscape of Dreams, Maggie shows us four examples of original daguerreotypes and tintypes as she collected them and then how she reconstructs them as her own art.

Bebe Krimmer: Spatial Order

Spatial Order is a culmination of sorts, distilling ideas and techniques Krimmer has been developing for years. Put simply, it all comes together here: repetition, collage, color, paint-handling, scale and content. Krimmer has spent the better part of 2 years working towards this exhibition, which will include a dozen medium to large scale paintings, and wall installations of numerous small scale works. The paintings all contain an element of discovery. As you approach the work, the surface transforms from a riot of abstract marks into a formal structure forming a hypnotic rhythm of collage elements. The white-on-white and black-on-black pieces appear minimal from a great distance, then open up as you step closer.

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission’s Community Gallery announces “Cumulous Skies: The Enduring Modernist Aesthetic in New Mexico,” an exhibition exploring the lasting impacts of the Modernist movement in New Mexico. In the early 1900’s numerous Modernists artist such as, John Marin, Andrew Dasburg, Georgia O’Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Willard Nash, Josef Bakos, Will Shuster, Walter Mruk, George Bellows, Cady Wells, Rebecca Salsbury James and others, came to New Mexico. They were seeking fresh inspiration through the exploration of the diverse landscape, vivid color and clear light of the high desert. The legacy of these avant-garde artists had a direct impact on the arts, culture and aesthetics of New Mexico’s population, creating a regional movement that expanded within, and far beyond, the borders of New Mexico. The exhibit is curated by Santa Fe artist Lawrence Fodor and is presented with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Daniel Brice: Works on Paper

In two sizes, on paper, Brice explores thick layers of paint, meticulously applied and burnished to a fine sheen. This color field work, more complex than it initially appears, records the tension and release of color and form in a modest rectangular playing field. But what puts this work "over the top" is the indescribable quality of paint on paper -it's different from canvas, softer and more intimate, and the colors sing.

This small show features just over a dozen recent works on paper from this Los Angeles based artist. Nationally recognized and exhibited, this is Brice's third solo show at Chiaroscuro.

Nuart Gallery is pleased to present In a Broken Tongue, a solo exhibition of new paintings by the artist Cecil Touchon. The exhibition will run May 24 through June 9, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, May 24th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The artist will be present.

Cecil Touchon is internationally renowned for abstractions that are based upon typography. Using the techniques of collage, he reassembles letter fonts from billboards into pure abstractions that transform verbal language into a form of visual architecture.

In this solo exhibition, Cecil Touchon continues to develop paintings based upon collage work. Sometimes the edges of the letters are perceptible, but most often they are simply lyrical shapes. By inverting the relationship between font and form, he demonstrates that visual abstraction can point to meanings deeper than mere words.

Cecil Touchon was born in Austin, Texas. His artistic inspiration was ignited early and explored throughout his childhood and into his young adulthood. He received his BFA from the University of Texas at Arlington. Throughout his career over 30 years, Touchon has been collected world wide and figures prominently in the Massurrealism movement and is a founding member of the 1987 Post- Dogmatist Group. He is associated and respected among the Art Mail and Fluxus communities. Touchon's works can be found in more than 45 corporate and international collections as well as having been included in the Venice Biennale in 2001 and 2009. Touchon's paintings are also in the collections of The International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction, the Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Art Institute and the Tate Modern.

In Jennifer J.L. Jones' abstract expressionist take on the world, there is beauty all around, even in the darker places that awaken our sense of danger. Her newest series, “Luminous Grace,” expands her vision of nature-as- teacher to bring us a fearless exploration of life's deepest mysteries.

While her technique remains the same—layers of paint and other media burnished to an otherworldly glow—this series projects a bolder, more authoritative tone even as it soothes and comforts with its ethereal beauty.

“These paintings are a little different energetically,” says Jones. “I've started them with larger gestures, bigger brush strokes, and I'm playing more with the colors. With this series I felt open and fearless.”

Drawing inspiration from her travels as well as from elements of nature glimpsed through her studio windows, Jones plumbs the depths of light and beauty, interpreting them through her own unique vision and paying attention to the ephemeral moments that underscore the importance of mindfulness amid an ever-changing world.

Ruth Duckworth (1919—2009) THE MAQUETTES

Ruth Duckworth was born in Germany in 1919, where, as a young woman of Jewish descent during the Nazi regime, she was not permitted to attend art school. Thankfully, she moved to England for art school where she discovered her great passion: sculpting abstracted line and form with clay. Early on, Duckworth exercised an independent mind by using a medium that was not recognized within the pantheon of “high art.” In doing so, she pioneered a new way of thinking about ceramics and the formalism of pure abstraction. Clearly influenced by the Romanian modernist sculptor Constantin Brancusi, as well as deeply moved by the ancient art of the Cycladic culture that preceded that of classical Greece, Duckworth developed her own abstractly elegant language. As Harmony Hammond noted in her review in Art in America (November 2010), “There is no clutter, no sentimentality or nostalgia…. The work … is deceptively simple. Had she sculpted primarily in a medium other than clay, Duckworth would have undoubtedly received greater attention in her lifetime.” Nonetheless, she hardly went unnoticed: Bellas Artes has been exhibiting work by the artist for nearly three decades. Beginning in 2005, a museum retrospective toured Duckworth’s art in seven US cities.

In 1964, Duckworth moved to Chicago from England. She settled in Chicago and lived there until her death in 2009 at the age of 90—her indomitable spirit had her sculpting into the last year of her life. Duckworth’s art never settled into one genre; it continued to evolve and change throughout six decades of practice, though she confined herself to three-dimensional work in clay, stone and bronze—creating commissioned wall reliefs, primarily in porcelain and stoneware, at such sites as government and university buildings, and for banks, private individuals, churches and synagogues. Her maquettes, which she made as models for many of these commissions, will be shown at the upcoming exhibition, including the last piece she made. These maquettes have never been offered for sale until now.

Duckworth said, “Play is the essence of creativity—creative play and gut reaction, instinct…. You have to be spontaneous and trust yourself.” Her spontaneity was based on a sharply honed sense of her art. Soon after arriving in England to study art, Duckworth worked as a stonemason. Carving into stone or clay, using a reductive process that would come to reveal the underlying forms she desired to expose, she employed a highly tactile and organic style that was always abstract, no matter how much it referenced the natural world. She played, with great success, with the tensions inherent in paradox—volume gives way to negative space, light to shadow, and solidly functional surfaces slip into a deliciously sensuous tactility.

When America needed hard workers, the cowboy was there. The job was dirty and difficult, low-paid and lowly regarded. But when an America torn by the Civil War needed a hero to unite its soul, the unassuming cowboy was an unlikely—and ultimately lasting—pick.

Since riding out of Spanish horse culture, he’s been an itinerant hired hand, an outlaw, a movie star, a rodeo athlete, a radio yodeler, and a rhinestoned disco diva. He’s been Spanish, Mexican, African American, Anglo, male, female, straight, and gay. His image has been co-opted to sell trucks, beer, boots, beans, jeans, tires, cigarettes, leather couches, presidential candidates, and a lifestyle far beyond the means of real-life buckaroos.

Despite the sometimes tortured lengths our imaginations have taken cowboys and cowgirls, the basic fact of their life is this: a rough-hewn job stacked against steep odds. The daily dangers of working with cattle and horses are matched by volatile global markets, a public with fickle tastes in heroes, and a big sky that can deliver glorious sunshine as easily as tornadoes, droughts and snowstorms.

Today, real cowboys sit uneasily in the saddle (or on the seat of an ATV, occasionally dubbed “a Japanese cutting horse”). Climate change has altered the range and dealt cattle-ranching a potential kill card. Even as popular culture delivers new-and-improved versions of a fanciful life on the range, Cowboys Real and Imagined asks a bare-boned question: Will the people who tamed that range survive?

For almost four decades, Clift has photographed two monolithic sites that dominate their expansive landscapes: Shiprock, an eroded volcanic form that rises above the northwestern New Mexico desert and is sacred to the Navajo (Diné), and Mont St. Michel, a tidal island off the north coast of France that is famous for its Romanesque-Gothic church and monastery. In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places.

Nuart Gallery is pleased to present In a Broken Tongue, a solo exhibition of new paintings by the artist Cecil Touchon. The exhibition will run May 24 through June 9, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, May 24th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The artist will be present.

Cecil Touchon is internationally renowned for abstractions that are based upon typography. Using the techniques of collage, he reassembles letter fonts from billboards into pure abstractions that transform verbal language into a form of visual architecture.

In this solo exhibition, Cecil Touchon continues to develop paintings based upon collage work. Sometimes the edges of the letters are perceptible, but most often they are simply lyrical shapes. By inverting the relationship between font and form, he demonstrates that visual abstraction can point to meanings deeper than mere words.

Cecil Touchon was born in Austin, Texas. His artistic inspiration was ignited early and explored throughout his childhood and into his young adulthood. He received his BFA from the University of Texas at Arlington. Throughout his career over 30 years, Touchon has been collected world wide and figures prominently in the Massurrealism movement and is a founding member of the 1987 Post- Dogmatist Group. He is associated and respected among the Art Mail and Fluxus communities. Touchon's works can be found in more than 45 corporate and international collections as well as having been included in the Venice Biennale in 2001 and 2009. Touchon's paintings are also in the collections of The International Museum of Collage, Assemblage and Construction, the Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Art Institute and the Tate Modern.

When America needed hard workers, the cowboy was there. The job was dirty and difficult, low-paid and lowly regarded. But when an America torn by the Civil War needed a hero to unite its soul, the unassuming cowboy was an unlikely—and ultimately lasting—pick.

Since riding out of Spanish horse culture, he’s been an itinerant hired hand, an outlaw, a movie star, a rodeo athlete, a radio yodeler, and a rhinestoned disco diva. He’s been Spanish, Mexican, African American, Anglo, male, female, straight, and gay. His image has been co-opted to sell trucks, beer, boots, beans, jeans, tires, cigarettes, leather couches, presidential candidates, and a lifestyle far beyond the means of real-life buckaroos.

Despite the sometimes tortured lengths our imaginations have taken cowboys and cowgirls, the basic fact of their life is this: a rough-hewn job stacked against steep odds. The daily dangers of working with cattle and horses are matched by volatile global markets, a public with fickle tastes in heroes, and a big sky that can deliver glorious sunshine as easily as tornadoes, droughts and snowstorms.

Today, real cowboys sit uneasily in the saddle (or on the seat of an ATV, occasionally dubbed “a Japanese cutting horse”). Climate change has altered the range and dealt cattle-ranching a potential kill card. Even as popular culture delivers new-and-improved versions of a fanciful life on the range, Cowboys Real and Imagined asks a bare-boned question: Will the people who tamed that range survive?

The New Mexico Museum of Art is pleased to present this one-man exhibition by master photographer William Clift, a long-time Santa Fe resident. The exhibition opens April 19 and runs through September 8, 2013.

For almost four decades, Clift has photographed two monolithic sites that dominate their expansive landscapes: Shiprock, an eroded volcanic form that rises above the northwestern New Mexico desert and is sacred to the Navajo (Diné), and Mont St. Michel, a tidal island off the north coast of France that is famous for its Romanesque-Gothic church and monastery. In this selection of more than seventy beautiful photographs, Clift shares his ongoing, nuanced exploration of the two places.

What’s New in New: Recent Acquisitions is the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s annual exhibition of new acquisitions celebrating the gallery’s namesake, Lloyd Kiva New. What’s New in New opens on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. and runs through December 30, 2013. The Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico will serve refreshments in honor of Kiva New’s birthday anniversary.

Curator Tony Chavarria’s focus with this show is on modern and contemporary Native art including paintings, monotypes, poetry, and sculpture created between 1968 and 2012.

Your puppy’s proper socialization should start pronto! A well socialized puppy – one that welcomes the interaction of friendly people and dogs is not only a happy pup but also a pleasure to live with.

Chaco’s Kinder Pup 1 is designed to teach your pup that people and dogs mean good things for him/her.

In addition, together we will work in teaching your puppy basic obedience (sit, stay, leave it, come and loose leash walking) as well as real life manners.

You will also learn how to minimize problems such as excessive chewing, house-soiling, home alone and puppy-play biting. During class puppies will have an opportunity to play with other friendly pups, pay attention to you while gaining confidence and social-skills.

The Details: Class open to 6 puppies and their parents. For puppies between ages: 10-18 weeks old.

Required Vaccinations:

Puppies should have had 2 DHLPP vaccines. 1 of them given after 8 weeks of age and at least 7 days prior to first class and should be kept current with their vaccines throughout the class. Proof of vaccination required on the first class.

NOTE: Please only enroll in this class if you have had your puppy at home for at least 2 weeks prior to our first puppy class. If your puppy is sick, please do not bring him/her to class. However, you are welcome to attend the session.

Dates & Time: Six week class. Saturdays, May 18th, 25th, June 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd 9:30-10:30 am.

As a printmaker, painter, and sculptor, Melanie Yazzie’s work draws upon her rich Diné (Navajo) cultural heritage. Her work follows the Diné dictum “walk in beauty” literally, creating beauty and harmony. As an artist, she works to serve as an agent of change by encouraging others to learn about social, cultural, and political phenomena shaping the contemporary lives of Native peoples in the United States and beyond. Her work incorporates both personal experiences as well as the events and symbols from Dine culture. Her early work focused on depictions of the harsh realities of Native peoples (i.e., racism, identity conflict, poverty, abuse, etc.) to bring to Native issues to the forefront, but more recently she is making work with a positive twist. Due to personal health issues and trying to live a calmer life style, she is focusing on quiet and balance, her work is reflecting this shift. Her work is informed and shaped by personal experiences and tries to tell many stories about things both real and imagined.

This year Peggy has focused on her beloved Taos - the people in their daily activities and the diverse scenery from mountains to low-lying valley views. There is a mystical draw to Taos and when Peggy is away her imagination is drawn back to creating art works from that place of honor and awe. As with early Taosartists, Peggy feels that same need to record and express these scenes of the heart of Taos and to share her inspirations with others.

You will find in this latest body of work a flamenco dancer with heals echoing on ancient wood floors of the Taos Inn, a Koshari clown ‘off duty’ perching on an adobe wall at the Pueblo, humble ranchers working on roofs and fences in Ranchos de Taos, extraordinary people living out their moments in Taos and of course, the Pow Wow dancers for which Peggy's work is so recognizable. As Peggy states, "I'll never cease being intrigued by the rhythm, color and history of this ancient culture in our midst, living just as their ancestors did.”
