The Roots of Literacy in the Ancient Near East Lecture Series

Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E River Rd. (at Dodge)
Monday, November 9, 2009, 7 – 8:30pm

Presenter: William Schniedewind
Event Title: The Art of Writing in Ancient Israel
Abstract: In this lecture Prof. Schniedewind will explain how writing arose in ancient Israel and how those skilled in writing eventually used those skills to create, edit, and assemble the books we now find in the Bible. The ancient Israelites were deeply indebted to their Egyptian, Phoenician, and Assyrian neighbors for many aspects of their culture. This is especially true in the area of writing. The Israelites utilized one of western civilization’s most precious inventions, the alphabet, to create their own unique scribal culture. In this culture written texts became the basis for Israelite religious authority and the means by which they preserved their history, religion, and culture. Ancient Israel’s most prized gift to the western world was the Bible, a collection of texts that have been treasured for over two millennia.
More info: fp.arizona.edu…
