DESCRIPTION:<strong>On the Look and Logos of Zen Art Modernism</strong><
br />\n<em>Gregory Levine\, associate professor of the art and architect
ure of Japan and Buddhist visual cultures\, University of California\, B
erkeley</em><br />\nThis lecture asks several questions about Zen art\,
particularly as we encounter\, enjoy\, and study it in the modern and co
ntemporary world. What makes art “Zen” and Zen art “Art”? What does Zen
art look like? From where and when does it arise: Southern Song dynasty
 China\, Muromachi period Japan\, London in the 1920s\, or Manhattan’s 19
50s Upper West Side…? No doubt Zen art has meant various things to monks
\, nuns\, rulers\, literati\, and lay followers of Buddhism from the med
ieval era onward. What about modern Japanophiles\, apologists for Japane
 se cultural identity\, Beat poets\, avant-garde artists\, art collectors
\, architects and designers\, not to mention purchasers of “Zen Micro” M
P3 players or “Zen” perfume? Love it\, dismiss it\; Zen art is\, surely
\, here to stay. What happens\, however\, when we reconsider the lexical
\, aesthetic\, and philosophical discourse on Zen art as it arose primari
ly during the twentieth century? Is Zen art something to talk about\, or
really nothing at all?<br /><br />\n\n<strong>Settings or Shrines? Disp
laying Tibetan Art</strong><br />\n<em>Katherine Anne Paul\, curator of
the arts of Asia\, Newark Museum</em><br />\nExhibitions and installatio
ns of art are meant to inspire wonder and delight in viewers while deliv
ering multiple layers of information. Tibetan Buddhist altars installed
within museums are useful lenses to focus issues of art and ambiance\, s
hrines and settings\, and interpretation. By comparing the Alice S. Kand
ell shrine at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\, two altars installed at th
 e Newark Museum\, a Tibetan-Buddhist domestic altar previously on view a
t the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and two settings created for the Rubi
n Museum of Art\, this talk examines challenges and potential directions
for museums that exhibit the wide-ranging arts of Asia.<br /><br />\n\n

DESCRIPTION:An increasing number of people now have access to digital te
chnologies that allow them to upload\, distribute\, and modify images\,
video\, and text. These practices have had an immense influence on our m
edia landscape and have redefined what cultural production looks and fee
ls like. Traditional divisions between "professional" and "amateur" prod
uctions have become complicated\, as increasingly ingenious creations ar
e uploaded from suburban basements and deceptively amateurish products a
re disseminated by the marketing departments of multi-billion dollar com
panies. Has remixing (altering\, adapting\, and emulating preexisting co

democratized cultural production or\, rather\, debased it? Artist and ex
pert panelists include:\n\n<li> <b>Marisa Olson</b>\, artist and assista

DESCRIPTION:Referring to the Indian penal code statute for fraud\, <em>S
hree 420</em> is perhaps Kapoor’s most famous incarnation of his onscree
n tramp persona. Arriving in the big city to make his fortune\, country
bumpkin Raju (Kapoor) is introduced to the urban underworld following br
ief encounters with a moralistic oligarch and a Cassandra-like beggar. W
ooing the honest schoolteacher Vidya (Nargis) while secretly dipping int
o a life of gambling and petty fraud\, Raju is inexorably drawn into mor
e dangerous criminal territory. Disgusted with his boasting and love of
money\, Vidya rejects him. As he finally rouses the poor into action aga
inst the rich parasites who prey on them\, he reveals to Vidya that “he
wears the mask of an entertainer to conceal his nerve endings\, his pain
and disappointments.” \n\nThe post-Partition changes to major Indian ci
ties loom large over the film’s tragicomic situations\, with the teeming
city streets a vivid backdrop for legendary musical numbers. The best k
nown of these is the fabulously titled <em>Mera Juta Hai Japani (My Shoe
s are Made in Japan)</em>. Description adapted from the Toronto Internat
 ional Film Festival. (Dir.: Raj Kapoor\, India\, 1955\, 169 min.\, 35mm

DESCRIPTION:One of the greatest and most famous Indian films ever made\,
<em>Awaara</em> was a global sensation. Collaborating for the first tim
 e with star writer K. A. Abbas\, Kapoor concocted a modern-day version o
f the tale of Rama’s banishment of Sita. A judge (Prithviraj Kapoor) rej
ects his pregnant wife after she is kidnapped and presumably raped by a
criminal. Protesting her innocence\, she raises her son\, Raju (Raj Kapo
or)\, in poverty. After being expelled from school for not paying his fe
es\, Raju is soon recruited into the same criminal’s gang. When he is re
united with his childhood sweetheart\, Rita (Nargis)\, now a ward of the
judge\, Raju tries to extricate himself from the vicious circle of pove
rty and violence and defy the judge’s deterministic belief that the chil
 d of a criminal is destined to be a criminal. \n\nAwaara’s marvelous\, e
xtended dream sequence—with Kapoor and Nargis successively cast in diffe
rent guises\, some mythological\, some modern\, continually seeking each
other’s embrace but torn apart by the forces of society—revolutionized
Hindi cinema and introduced the idea of externalizing characters’ inner
conflicts through song-and-dance numbers. The film also marks the first
appearance of the tramp persona that would make Kapoor famous: a sly\, s
exy bandit and a carefree underdog who could charm a rock. Description a
dapted from the Toronto International Film Festival. (Dir.: Raj Kapoor\,
  India\, 1951\, 193 min.\, 35mm\, B&W\, Hindi with English subtitles)
