Hot Spots of Invention Symposium

Saturday, November 7, 2009, 9:30 AM – 6 PM

The Lemelson Center presents a 2-day symposium on Hot Spots of Invention as part of its New Perspectives on Invention and Innovation series.

Whether it’s Edison’s laboratory or Silicon Valley, both scholars and the public have long been curious about inventors and the places in which they work. The Hot Spots of Invention symposium will feature scholars, inventors, and practitioners who will explore how invention and innovation are fostered--or hindered--by physical environments.

Registration is requested, but not required. Should you wish to RSVP, please do so at americanhistory.si.edu….

9:30 AM: Opening Remarks
Dr. Arthur Molella, Director, Jerome and Dorothy Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation

The symposium sessions are divided into three broad categories--People, Spaces, and Places. Sessions on “place” explore the evolution of particular innovation hotspots and the factors that led to their creation. Sessions devoted to “people” explore the role and influence of charismatic, dynamic individuals and their relationships to the larger region around them. “Spaces” refers to the specific locations -- basement workshops to industrial laboratories -- that inventors generate and manipulate to suit their creative needs.

9:45 AM: Places

Dr. David Rhees, Executive Director, Bakken Museum, on "Medical Alley" in the Twin Cities, Minnesota

Dr. Katherine Ott, Curator of Medicine and Science, National Museum of American History; Dwight Bowers, Curator of Music, Sports, and Entertainment, National Museum of American History; and Ryan Lintelman, Froject Assistant for Information Technologies and Communications, National Museum of American History, on Los Angeles and invention in the film industry

11:30 AM: People

Dr. Leslie Berlin, Project Historian, Silicon Valley Archives, on Robert Noyce and Silicon Valley

Dr. Paul Israel, Director and General Editor, Thomas A.
Spotlight on History: Skyhooking the Mail

Saturday, November 7, 2009, 1 – 3 PM

Seventy years ago, an airplane swooped out of the sky to snatch a container full of mail suspended on a rope between two poles. Designed to provide airmail service to towns without airports, this unique form of airmail operated for about ten years and was invented by a dentist. Today, learn about airmail service with the following activities:

1-3 PM: Drop by to chat with museum staff about this oddball story beneath a Stinson Reliant airplane that performed skyhooking mail exchanges (Atrium).

1:30 PM: Join James O’Donnell (museum specialist) and Gary Ell (marketing creative director, Engineered Arresting Systems) as they give a presentation on airmail pick-up’s past and high-tech future (Discovery Center).

More info: www.postalmuseum.si.edu…

Children's Native American Opera: El conejo y el coyote/The Rabbit and the Coyote

Sunday, November 8, 2009, 2 PM

(for ages 5 and up) In this tale based on Zapotecas legends, Rabbit outwits Coyote at every turn -- in a garden of chile peppers, at a boiling cauldron, by a cactus, at a wasp's nest, on a quiet lagoon, and finally in an out-of-this-world location that could leave a creature howling! This imaginative opera by Victor Rasgado is sung in a fantastical imaginary language and narrated in Spanish. Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month.
Note: This performance was previously to be narrated in English; it will now be narrated in Spanish.

More info: www.nmai.si.edu…

Meet Our Museum: Confederate Currency—Whatever It Took to Keep It Circulating

Thursday, November 12, 2009, 12 – 12:30 PM

Curator Dick Doty of the Museum’s Numismatics collection displays some examples of paper notes that reveal the ingenuity of Confederate treasury officials and the public to keep money in circulation during the Civil War. Many methods were employed, from hand- and machine-stitching, pinning, and affixing of postage stamps. These irregularities were uncovered when a major collection was donated to the Museum in 1998.

This Meet Our Museum will be held in the Presidential Reception Suite, first floor center. A question-and-answer session follows the presentation.

Every Thursday, at a Meet Our Museum talk, a staff member shares stories about objects in the museum's collections and discusses the museum's efforts to collect, preserve, research, interpret, and present our nation's history.

Coral Conservation

Thursday, November 12, 2009, 12 – 2:30 PM

Coral, one of the world’s biological treasures, is at risk worldwide. Colonies that have flourished for thousands of years are dying because of environmental damage, destructive fishing practices such as dynamite fishing and bottom trawling, pollution, and global warming.

Join National Zoo scientists and conservation leaders to discuss how they are preserving critical forms of corals to avoid extinction, and how they eventually plan to restore these species back into the wild.

More info: nationalzoo.si.edu…
