Description | As the language of the heart, music heals our bodies and our souls. As Oliver Sacks once wrote, because “music can pierce the heart directly,” we may feel “pain and grief more intensely,” but also “solace and consolation at the same time” (Musicophilia). Because music so completely engages us, it literally heals our brains. Dr. Blair will give a short talk—about 10 minutes—and then perform 8 original songs from her CD, Little Queenie, which was released in July of 2016. Joining her onstage will be Bradly Miranda (drums), Jay Allen (bass, lead, banjo, and mandolin), and Jon Parry (fiddle). Dr. Nicole Blair, UW Tacoma, is a senior lecturer. She teaches composition and various courses in literature. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Mississippi College, an M.A. in English from University of Southern Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in Modern British Literature from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In 2014, she composed five songs for the play “Unwritten Women” which she performed when the play debuted at UW Tacoma. She recently recorded these songs which will be featured on a new CD. Interestingly, Nicole was in a movie when she was 8 years old, and she once played guitar at a hookah bar in Istanbul. |
