Description | Grit City Think & Drink You'll Like Tacoma! Booster Songs for the City of Destiny In the early decades of the 20th century, 'booster songs' were published in cities around America as musical representations of civic pride. Tacoma was no exception, and in an era before television or smartphones, it was often sheet music - with brightly-illustrated covers and catchy lyrics - which advertised the City of Destiny to visitors, settlers, and entrepreneurs. Learn the stories behind these songs, see the cover art, and with the help of special guest Ryan Bede, hear a few of the songs performed live - for the first time in a century! Kim Davenport is a Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington Tacoma where she teaches classes in music, many with a Tacoma focus. Her research focuses around stories of local history, particularly relating to music. She is currently working on her second book for Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series, and manages the TacomaMusicHistory.org blog. |
