DESCRIPTION:Join St. Helena Public Library every Monday evening at 7 pm
for a free film. In November\, the library will celebrate the works of
a couple of our favorite authors\, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee\,
 along with a special film for Thanksgiving.\n\nNovember 16th:\nRanked 34
on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Film
s\, To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-orien
ted dramas ever made. A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the
Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee\, the film retains a timeles
s quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter (racism
in the Depression-era South) and remains powerfully resonant in present-
day America with its advocacy of tolerance\, justice\, integrity\, and l
oving\, responsible parenthood. As Atticus Finch\, the small-town Alabam
a lawyer and widower father of two\, Gregory Peck gives one of his fines
t performances with his impassioned defense of a black man (Brock Peters
) wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman. Whi
le his children\, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford)\, learn th
e realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred\, they also learn
to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious
\, mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall\, in his brilliant\,
almost completely nonverbal screen debut). What emerges from this evoca
tive\, exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of
Harper Lee's enduring novel and a showcase for some of the finest Americ
an acting ever assembled in one film. \n\nLicensing agreements prohibit
us from using the titles of films in promotions. Info\, 963-5244.

DESCRIPTION:Join St. Helena Public Library for a book discussion. You ne
ed not have read the books to attend. \n\nDan Brown’s The Lost Symbol:\n
The Lost Symbol begins with an ancient ritual\, a shadowy enclave\, and
of course\, a secret. Readers know they are in Dan Brown territory when
\, by the end of the first chapter\, a secret within a secret is revealed
. To tell too much would ruin the fun of reading this delicious thriller
\, so you will find no spoilers here. Suffice it to say that as with man
 y series featuring a recurring character\, there is a bit of a formula a
t work (one that fans will love). Again\, brilliant Harvard professor Ro
bert Langdon finds himself in a predicament that requires his vast knowl
edge of symbology and superior problem-solving skills to save the day. T
he setting\, unlike other Robert Langdon novels\, is stateside\, and in
Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fascinating as Paris or Vatican City
(note to the D.C. tourism board: get your "Lost Symbol" tour in order).
And\, as with other Dan Brown books\, the pace is relentless\, the reve
lations many\, and there is an endless parade of intriguing factoids tha
t will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Lan
gdon and the guys from Mythbusters. \n\nNothing is as it seems in a Robe
rt Langdon novel\, and The Lost Symbol itself is no exception–a page-tur
ner to be sure\, but Brown also challenges his fans to open their minds
to new information. Join us as we discuss this latest (and final) instal
lment in the Dan Brown Trilogy along with our favorite pieces of the oth
er two titles\, Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code.

DESCRIPTION:Join St. Helena Public Library every Monday evening at 7 pm
for a free film. In November\, the library will celebrate the works of
a couple of our favorite authors\, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee\,
along with a special film for Thanksgiving.\n\nNovember 23rd:\nThis week
we take a break from our Capote/Harper Lee retrospective to celebrate T
hanksgiving with this special film. Reformed wild child April Burns (Kat
ie Holmes) attempts to make Thanksgiving dinner -- while battling a temp
eramental oven -- for her estranged suburban family at her grungy New Yo
rk apartment and anticipates introducing them to her new boyfriend\, Bob
by (Derek Luke). The plot of this film\, a sweet independent film\, coul
dn't be simpler: as April struggles to cook\, her estranged family slowl
y drives toward the city\, stopping now and then to question why they're
going to a meal they expect to be not only bad to eat\, but awkward and
unhappy. April must rely on the kindness of strangers to pull off the p
erfect meal and the perfect memory. Oliver Platt\, Sean Hayes and Oscar-
nominated Patricia Clarkson co-star in this drama that observes a dysfun
ctional family coming together to address the past and heal the future.

a couple of our favorite authors\, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee\,
along with a special film for Thanksgiving.\n\nNovember 30th:\nThe toast
of New York society after penning Breakfast at Tiffany's\, flamboyant w
riter Truman Capote’s (Philip Seymour Hoffman\, in an Oscar-winning role
) imagination is captured by the shocking murder of a smalltown Kansas f
amily. Soon he finds himself in a dance with the devil while researching
the Clutter family murders for his masterwork\, In Cold Blood. This mer
cilessly perceptive drama shows how Truman Capote brought about his own
self-destruction in the course of writing this "nonfiction novel" that w
as immediately acclaimed as a literary milestone. Hoffman transcends mer
e mimicry to create an utterly authentic\, psychologically tormented por
trait of an insincere artist who was not above lying and manipulation to
get what he needed. Bennett Miller's intimate direction focuses on the
consequences of Capote's literary ambition\, tempered by an equally fine
performance by Catherine Keener as Harper Lee\, Capote's friend and the
author of To Kill a Mockingbird\, who served as Capote's quiet voice of
conscience. Spanning the seven-year period between the Kansas murders a
nd the publication of In Cold Blood in 1966\, this film reveals the many
faces of a writer who grew too close to his subjects\, losing his moral
compass as they were fitted with a hangman's noose. \n\nLicensing agree
