Monday Night Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee Film Series

Join St. Helena Public Library every Monday evening at 7 pm for a free film. In November, the library will celebrate the works of a couple of our favorite authors, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee, along with a special film for Thanksgiving.

November 2nd:
No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic.

Licensing agreements prohibit us from using the titles of films in promotions.
Film: 'For My Father'

On the first Wednesday of each month, St. Helena Public Library shows an independent or foreign film that has been featured in a film festival but has not yet been widely released in theaters.

November 4th: For My Father (a Thriller from Isreal)
Terek, a Palestinian forced on a suicide mission in Tel Aviv to redeem his father's honor, is given a second chance when the fuse on his explosive vest fails to detonate. Forced to spend the weekend in Tel Aviv awaiting its repair, Terek must live amongst the people he was planning to kill. To his surprise he connects with several Israelis on the outskirts of society, including the beautiful Keren, who has cut off contact with her Orthodox family and upbringing. With nothing to lose, Terek and Keren open up to one another, and an unlikely love blooms between two isolated and damaged individuals, raised to be enemies. However, with the deadly load of explosives still strapped to him, he must spend 48 hours in the city, caught between the men that sent him–who can blow up his bomb remotely, the Israeli police patrolling the streets, and his new-found companions. Spending this time with Keren and his new friends, Terek discovers the spark of life returning to fill his soul, but when the weekend ends, Terek must make the decision of his life. Winner Audience Award (Best Film) Moscow Int’l Film Festival and Cinequest Film Festival. Official Selection The Hamptons Int’l Film Festival. In November, the library will celebrate the works of a couple of our favorite authors, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee, along with a special film for Thanksgiving.

November 9th:
Truman Capote's extraordinary nonfiction book about the course of two killers in this world–their lives, their senseless slaughter of an entire family, their executions–was faithfully adapted for the screen in this 1967 film by Richard Brooks. Robert Blake and Scott Wilson are remarkable as the murderers, but what has kept this film special over the decades is Brooks' blunt, clearheaded, and nonsensational approach to the story. The term "semidocumentary" has been applied to Brooks' style on this film, and it's an entirely fair description. The experience of watching In Cold Blood is naturally unsettling, but the director, as with Capote, leaves final judgments about justice to the beholder.

Licensing agreements prohibit us from using the titles of films in promotions.

November 16th:
Ranked 34 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Films, To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made. A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter (racism in the Depression-era South) and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance, justice, integrity, and loving, responsible parenthood. As Atticus Finch, the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two, Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man (Brock Peters) wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman. While his children, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford), learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred, they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious, mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall, in his brilliant, almost completely nonverbal screen debut). What emerges from this evocative, exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lee's enduring novel and a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film.

Licensing agreements prohibit us from using the titles of films in promotions. Info, 963-5244.

Book Discussion: Dan Brown

Join St. Helena Public Library for a book discussion. You need not have read the books to attend.

Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol:
The Lost Symbol begins with an ancient ritual, a shadowy enclave, and of course, a secret. Readers know they are in Dan Brown territory when, by the end of the first chapter, a secret within a secret is revealed. To tell too much would ruin the fun of reading this delicious thriller, so you will find no spoilers here. Suffice it to say that as with many series featuring a recurring character, there is a bit of a formula at work (one that fans will love). Again, brilliant Harvard professor Robert Langdon finds himself in a predicament that requires his vast knowledge of symbology and superior problem-solving skills to save the day. The setting, unlike other Robert Langdon novels, is stateside, and in Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fascinating as Paris or Vatican City (note to the D.C. tourism board: get your "Lost Symbol" tour in order). And, as with other Dan Brown books, the pace is relentless, the revelations many, and there is an endless parade of intriguing factoids that will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Langdon and the guys from Mythbusters.

Nothing is as it seems in a Robert Langdon novel, and The Lost Symbol itself is no exception–a page-turner to be sure, but Brown also challenges his fans to open their minds to new information. Join us as we discuss this latest (and final) installment in the Dan Brown Trilogy along with our favorite pieces of the other two titles, Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code.

November 23rd:
This week we take a break from our Capote/Harper Lee retrospective to celebrate Thanksgiving with this special film. Reformed wild child April Burns (Katie Holmes) attempts to make Thanksgiving dinner -- while battling a temperamental oven -- for her estranged suburban family at her grungy New York apartment and anticipates introducing them to her new boyfriend, Bobby (Derek Luke). The plot of this film, a sweet independent film, couldn't be simpler: as April struggles to cook, her estranged family slowly drives toward the city, stopping now and then to question why they're going to a meal they expect to be not only bad to eat, but awkward and unhappy. April must rely on the kindness of strangers to pull off the perfect meal and the perfect memory. Oliver Platt, Sean Hayes and Oscar-nominated Patricia Clarkson co-star in this drama that observes a dysfunctional family coming together to address the past and heal the future.

Licensing agreements prohibit us from using the titles of films in promotions. In November, the library will celebrate the works of a couple of our favorite authors, Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee, along with a special film for Thanksgiving.

November 30th:
The toast of New York society after penning Breakfast at Tiffany's, flamboyant writer Truman Capote’s (Philip Seymour Hoffman, in an Oscar-winning role) imagination is captured by the shocking murder of a smalltown Kansas family. Soon he finds himself in a dance with the devil while researching the Clutter family murders for his masterwork, In Cold Blood. This mercilessly perceptive drama shows how Truman Capote brought about his own self-destruction in the course of writing this "nonfiction novel" that was immediately acclaimed as a literary milestone. Hoffman transcends mere mimicry to create an utterly authentic, psychologically tormented portrait of an insincere artist who was not above lying and manipulation to get what he needed. Bennett Miller's intimate direction focuses on the consequences of Capote's literary ambition, tempered by an equally fine performance by Catherine Keener as Harper Lee, Capote's friend and the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, who served as Capote's quiet voice of conscience. Spanning the seven-year period between the Kansas murders and the publication of In Cold Blood in 1966, this film reveals the many faces of a writer who grew too close to his subjects, losing his moral compass as they were fitted with a hangman's noose.

Licensing agreements prohibit us from using the titles of films in promotions.
