DESCRIPTION:"Papercuts" presents the centuries-old tradition of paper cu
tting both as an art form and as a contemporary meditation on culture\,
beauty\, and the boundaries between nature and artifice. The seven artis
ts featured in this exhibition create complex and delicate objects\; som
e artists slice away unwanted sections of paper\, others select paper-ba
sed products from material culture\, and some add other media to their w
ork. The results can deceive the viewer into believing that they are not
seeing works formed out of the "simple" medium of paper. The artists fe
atured in this exhibition are Jaq Belcher\, Béatrice Coron\, Michelle Fo
rsyth\, Reni Gower\, Lenka Konopasek\, Lauren Scanlon\, and Daniella Woo
lf. "Papercuts" was organized by Reni Gower and Virginia Commonwealth Un
iversity's painting and printmaking department. Through September 14. Ho
urs are Tuesday - Friday 10 am to 4 pm\; Saturday 1-5 pm.

\n The Barefoot Movement is an acoustic trio with members hailing from no
rth-central North Carolina to middle Tennessee.&nbsp\; The group draws f
 rom the styles of bluegrass\, folk\, Americana\, and rock\, creating a f
resh\, original sound\, featuring interweaving harmonies\, lively instru
mentation\, and accomplished songwriting.&nbsp\; The resulting sound is
sometimes soft and smooth\, and other times it brings on a downright foo
t-stomping good time.\n \n The name "The Barefoot Movement" has many dif
ferent meanings for the group.&nbsp\; "The initial reason the name dawne
d on me was because there was I time when I never wore shoes at performa
nces"\, says Noah.&nbsp\; "But I would say that what it really means ref
ers to the saying\, 'You can't judge a man till you've walked a mile in
his shoes.' So\, if you eliminate shoes\, then you can't judge anyone at
all.&nbsp\; Beyond that\, there's just something special about being ba
refoot in the summertime."\n \n The Barefoot Movement is taking folk mus
ic somewhere new without forgetting the old.&nbsp\; They bring listeners
something that is missing from the radio airwaves\; something that peop
le can relate to-something they can truly understand.&nbsp\; Everyone wh
o hears them agrees\, and if you give them a listen\, you will too\, The
  Barefoot Movement is contagious.

cross the threshold of being able to say they are truly committed for t

ears as a band have been a fast-moving blur of rubber on road\, touring
coast to coast through the states and Europe. Most nights of the year ar
e spent far from their Raleigh homes\, squinting out from bright stages
at a growing legion of passionate fans who’ve followed them through the
release of six albums that reflect a whirlwind of too many whiskey soake

is in full bloom. But what happens when it all stops feeling good?\n Bu
rn.Flicker.Die. is what has emerged from that scenario for this group of
hard working players.&nbsp\; After two years of writing\, they journeye
d to the legendary recording hub which gave birth to some of the greates
t blues\, country and rock records of all time: Muscle Shoals/Sheffield
\, AL. Recorded in eight days under the precise hand of friend/tour buddy
Jason Isbell\, the record is an aptly named milestone for the band\, an
d their most painstaking effort to date. As a long-time Southern rock ar
tisan\, Isbell provided a weathered know-how in producing the record Ame
rican Aquarium is proudest of. Described as a “consequence record” by vo
calist BJ Barham\, the band spent that week pushing out everything that’
s been haunting them: working for six years\, watching buzz bands peak a
nd die\, and pining for their own payoff.

\n The Dirty Guv’nahs’ live show is led by the soulful holler of frenetic
front man James Trimble. Brothers Justin and Aaron Hoskins’ lay down a
sturdy foundation of tight rhythms on bass and drums (respectively)\, wh
ile Chris Doody’s thick Hammond organ and bluesy piano along with Michae
l Jenkins’ and Cozmo Holloway’s tasty guitar stylings round out the grou
p’s sound. The result is accurately described by a recent review in Musi
c Connection Magazine: “The Dirty Guv’nahs don’t just play music\; they
capture the human experience through song.”\n \n The Dirty Guv’nahs’ unl
ikely genesis took place when band members were introduced through a mut
ual friend\, nicknamed “The Guv’nah”\, who eventually became the band’s
namesake. Their following grew quickly and after a string of sellout sho
ws in their hometown of Knoxville\, Tennessee\, they were offered their
first performance slot at Bonnaroo. That concert led to a recording oppo
rtunity in December of 2009 at roots-rock mecca Levon Helm Studios\, and
the band hasn’t looked back since.

Rousing and raucous\, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and
world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer\, all infused with a touch o
f punk-rock sensibility. Take a trio of classically trained dueling fidd
lers\, toss in a rhythm guitar\, a banjo and the occasional funky accord
ion\, then power it with the driving rhythm of a world percussionist\, a
nd you’ve got the ingredients for a show you won’t soon forget. Scythian
’s high-energy\, adrenaline-peddling\, interactive brand of music is the
result of their origins as street performers and has one goal in mind –
to get people up on their feet and dancing.Their repertoire ranges from
traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and
dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes\, and then crosses
back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

“I have no doubt that in a short time\, John Fullbright will be a househ
old name in American music.” - Jimmy Webb\n \n Oklahoma has proved ferti
le ground for songwriting over the years. From Albert Brumley and Woody
Guthrie through Leon Russell and Jimmy Webb\, Oklahoma has produced song
writers that pursued their singular vision and left the music world enri
ched\, and often changed\, by their contributions. Although it would be
careless to suggest that an artist just releasing their debut album warr
ants a place in that group\, John Fullbright’s From The Ground Up has so
me of the greats (see above) thinking that the 23-year-old might just ha
ve a place in that conversation someday soon.\n \n John Fullbright was r
aised and still resides in Okemah\, Oklahoma\, a hometown he shares with
Woody Guthrie (the photo on the album cover shows him on the front porc
h of the house that both he and his father grew up in). Music was a stap
le of the Fullbright household\, mostly in the form of the family’s dive
rse and treasured album collection. “The most trouble I ever got in was
when I had done something to one of my mother’s albums\,” Fullbright rec
alls. The early pull of music was intense\; he started playing piano at
age 5\, later picking up the guitar. His relative cultural isolation ser
ved him in that he had space to listen to his own developing voice\, but
when he was ready to make his way in the world\, he benefitted greatly
by being one hour from a great support system for singer-songwriters.\n
\n The Blue Door\, the legendary venue\, took him in and exposed him to
some of the greatest songwriters in the country as they would pass throu
gh town in concert. The founder of The Blue Door\, Greg Johnson\, was so
taken by Fullbright’s talent\, that he began managing him in order to o
pen the necessary doors for his career to take root. Fullbright and John
son released a live album in 2009 that set sales records at Woodyfest\,
the annual folk festival honoring Woody Guthrie.\n \n Fullbright\, like
the more famous Okemahite\, displays a distrust in power\, whether tempo
ral or divine\, that is evident as soon as one drops the needle on From
The Ground Up. In “Gawd Above\,” he looks at the world through God’s eye
s\, and it is the Old Testament Yahweh\, with His jealousy and manipulat
ion\, that is speaking. He jokingly refers to this song as his “Sympathy
for the Creator.” Fullbright also skewers power run amok in the worldly
sense in “The Fat Man\,” a song that was inspired by a poem from Oklaho
ma poet Bert Lockwood. Over a Kurt Weill-like musical bed\, he paints a
picture of wealth and power personified as a puppeteer who pulls the str
ings necessary to further enrich himself. Fullbright implores his listen
er to fight the power and hypocrisy with a wrathful vengeance (“Cut the
strings from his fingers/Wrap them twice around his throat/Show him not
your kind mercy/From the laws that he forgot he wrote”). And in the stan
dout “Satan and St. Paul\,” he gives voice to an anger that accompanies
the dissolution of faith in orthodox religiosity.\n Fullbright traverses
an emotional and musical terrain that is extremely broad\, showing equa
l acuity with tender ballads and songs that make you want to drive faste
r with your window rolled down.\n \n In “Me Wanting You\,” he shows a Ha
ggard-like smoldering directness\, with lyrics so simple and unambiguous
\, that the intended target cannot escape from their impact. “Song For A
Child\,” is a moving testament to the lasting bond between parents and
their children (“Little boys grow up to be their daddies/That makes mama
s love them even more/And even though the world may treat you badly/You'
ll be daddy's child forevermore/You'll remain a child forevermore”). In
“Moving\,” an unfolding sense of freedom brings the listener to a rockin
g\, ecstatic state\, while “Daydreamer” lays out a massive hook that jux
taposes nicely with the underlying nihilism of the lyric.\n \n Fullbrigh
t co-produced the album with Wes Sharon (who also played bass on the alb
um)\, the owner of 115 Studios in Norman\, Oklahoma. Fullbright played m
any of the instruments on the album – all of piano and harmonica\, almos
t all of the organ parts and much of the guitar work. Musicians from the
legendary to the infamous lent their talents - Terry “Buffalo” Ware and
Andrew Hardin added guitar\, while Fats Kaplin played violin and steel
guitar. Other musicians on the album are Giovanni Carnuccio III (drums)
\, John Knudson (organ)\, Jess Klein (background vocals) and Ryan Englema
n (guitar).\n \n John Fullbright is a young man who finds love\, beauty
and pain in the here and now\, but skepticism and disdain for those that
would look past the world or take advantage of the dreams of those hopi
ng for a better world. That he can articulate his worldview with an almo
st otherworldly precocity makes his debut studio album From The Ground U
p worthy of attention. From the fertile ground of Oklahoma\, another son
 gwriting legend may be blooming.

Sol Driven Train’s music weaves through genres like images in a Tom Robb
ins paragraph. The band’s sonic schizophrenia absorbs songwriting influe
nces like John Prine and Paul Simon\, afrocaribbean rhythmic exploration
s\, and funky New Orleans-style brass into earnest songs of life\, love
\, loss\, and long johns. The versatile 5-piece band\, based in Charlesto
 n\, SC\, features rotating lead vocalists\, and multi-instrumental talen
t spread across horns\, strings\, and percussion. Combining rich varieti
es of American pop and folk music into their own port-town sound\, Sol D
riven Train has carved out a unique musical identity within the burgeoni
ng roots music scene.\n \n During the spring of 2000\, a close circle of
friends and family began gathering in college apartments downtown Charl
eston to create sound and share in the joy of music. Through the course
of over 12 years and over 1\,000 live shows\, this same spirit still gui
des Sol Driven Train through the rocky road of the music industry. The v
enues have grown from bedrooms to festival stages\, the amps have gotten
louder\, the lineup has evolved\, and the crowds have multiplied\, but
the sense of brotherhood\, mutual support\, and musical independence wit
hin the band has strengthened. Through hard work and a commitment to liv
e performance\, the band’s reputation and collective musical ability has
grown with every season. Named 2011’s “Rock Band of the Year” by the Ch
arleston City Paper\, and “On the Verge” by Relix Magazine in January 20
12\, Sol Driven Train is an independent band breaking into the national
spotlight. Nine independent releases including two critically-acclaimed
 albums for children\, a live concert DVD\, a live album\, four full-leng
th studio albums\, and last summer’s popular “Watermelon” EP document th
e band’s winding musical development. The band’s loyal fans recently fun
ded the release ofSol Driven Train’s upcoming full-length album\, Underd

Presented by 101.5 The Music Place Summer Concert Series at The Dalevill
e Town Center Pavillion\n \n Black Lillies front man Cruz Contreras know
s a thing or two about the road.\n \n After co-founding Robinella and th
e CCstringband with his wife\, he spent nearly a decade traveling the ro
ad and making music from coast to coast. When his marriage – and the ban
d – dissolved in 2007\, he returned to the road … this time\, as the dri
ver of a truck for a stone company.&nbsp\; It was here\, over a year spe
nt rolling down the highways of East Tennessee\, that the songs and soun
ds that would form the nexus of The Black Lillies were conceived.\n \n A
nd “Runaway Freeway Blues\,” the band’s third studio album\, was realize
d exactly there … on the road.&nbsp\; When the Lillies weren’t playing t
heir 200-odd gigs during 2012\, they were in Wild Chorus Studio in their
hometown of Knoxville\, Tenn.\, working with Scott Minor of Sparklehors
e to craft a beautiful ode to restless spirits and rambling hearts. Root
ed in the mud-rutted switchbacks of Appalachia\, “Runaway Freeway Blues”
is the sound of a band that’s becoming something of a phenomenon across
the country.\n \n Contreras and his bandmates – harmony vocalist Trisha
Gene Brady\, multi-instrumentalist Tom Pryor\, bass player Robert Richa
rds and drummer Jamie Cook – have grown from a few friends sitting aroun
d campfires and living rooms to a band that shows up in far-flung cities
where folks to whom they’ve never played before already know the words
to the songs. Eschewing record labels\, they still managed to put a trac
k from the last record (“Same Mistakes\,” off of “100 Miles of Wreckage”
) in Country Music Television’s top 12 requested videos for four months.
(Its predecessor\, “Two Hearts Down\,” was a top-requested video on CMT
for three months.) They’ve been featured on numerous television special
s and conquered festivals as widespread as Bonnaroo\, Pickathon\, and CM
A Fan Fair.&nbsp\; Despite trafficking in a richer\, more authentic bran
d of country and Americana than what gets played on mainstream country r
adio\, they’ve still been invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry more
than a dozen times – a record for an independent act.\n \n \n The Black
Lillies\, in other words\, have come a long way from those early days\,
when Contreras channeled heartache and regret into a stunning debut. “Wh
iskey Angel” was the sound of a man drowning his sorrows\, and an introd
uction to someone who had languished behind the scenes for too long. As
the guy who loaned out his initials to Robinella and the CCstringband\,
which flirted with national fame a few years ago with a hit (“Man Over”)
on Country Music Television\, an appearance on “Late Night With Conan O
’Brien” in 2003\, and albums on both Sony and Dualtone\, he was known be
 st as a mandolin virtuoso and bandleader.\n \n Saturday\, July 20\, 2013
