Over the last hundred years Jesus Christ has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways in film. The first February offering, Jesus Goes to the Oscars: Christ in Film, will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays, February 1st-15th. Each week the class will explore one or more Hollywood depictions of Christ, including "bio-pics" like The Greatest Story Ever Told, musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, and more controversial films like The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ. Identical sessions will be offered at 10:00AM and 7:00PM in Fellowship Hall, led by Senior Pastor John Danner. A second offering begins February 29th, as Pastor Danner presents a five-part study on interfaith relations called One God, Three Faiths: Jewish, Christian and Muslim Relations. The class will trace the history of the relationships among these faith communities which all claim a common ancestor in Abraham. “The workshop information will be particularly useful to members of the baby-boomer generation, which is approaching retirement,” said firm Principal and Financial Planner Tom Uhler, one of the workshop facilitators. “We provide easy-to-understand information designed to clear up confusion about Social Security issues. We have held similar sessions and found that having accurate knowledge lowers stress levels for those facing retirement, either in the near future or in several years.”

Uhler has more than three decades of experience in financial services in Southwest Florida and has qualified from 1995 through 2012 for the Raymond James Financial Services Executive Council, whose membership is based primarily on assets under management, education, credentials and fiscal-year production. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association of Southwest Florida and serves on the executive board and endowment investment committee for Southwest Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America. Uhler also sits on the board of directors for Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades. He chairs the United Way 2011-12 fundraising campaign.

Co-facilitator for the workshop will be Certified Financial Planner Scott Schatzle, who has eight years of financial-services experience and is one of roughly 55,000 Certified Financial Planners in the U.S. He served on the boards of the Financial Planning Association of Southwest Florida and the student-run Financial Managers Association at Florida Gulf Coast University, and has been an instructor for the CFP-certification program at FGCU.

The services will be held at 9:00 and 11:00 AM on Transfiguration Sunday, February 19. Both services will feature the Blue Dirt Dixieland Jazz Band. “Throughout the history of the Christian church,” noted Senior Pastor John Danner, “the calendar has been marked by alternating times of celebration and contemplation. Lent is the most contemplative season of the year, as people prepare spiritually for Holy Week and Easter.” In many parts of the world, the days or weeks before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, are observed as festive times, most notably in New Orleans where Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is marked by parades and parties. Mardi Gras was a time for cleaning out all the fats before the Lenten time of fasting. Hence the name, Fat Tuesday. The Blue Dirt Dixieland Jazz Band is a traditional New Orleans-style band made up of musicians from Southwest Florida. The players include: Phil Blanchette, trumpet; Dave Killkelly, clarinet; Howard Bacon, trombone; Judy Harrington, piano; Dave Thorton, tuba; Wes English, banjo, and Tom Cooley, drums. “We play up-beat, “feel good” music,” notes tuba player Dave Thorton. “We like one another; we like to play together.” The band’s name comes from a term used for especially fine soil in the Deep South, said to be so palatable that it is sometimes eaten like candy! The public is invited attend either service, both of which will feature old-time gospel melodies like “Closer Walk with Thee,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”.

Uhler and Vertich Financial Planners will present “Social Security Unlocked,” Feb 9 on Sanibel Island, Feb. 16 in Fort Myers, and Feb. 23 in Cape Coral. The Thursday afternoon one-hour complimentary workshop will address when to begin collecting Social Security benefits, file-and-suspend options, strategies that can maximize benefits, the impact of inflation, and how taking Social Security early may affect one’s family.

All three workshops begin at 2 p.m. The Feb. 9 session will be held at the Sanibel Community House at 2173 Periwinkle Way. The Feb. 16 event is scheduled for 1510 Royal Palm Square Blvd., Suite 103 in Fort Myers. The Feb. 23, Cape Coral workshop will take place at The Resort at Marina Village at Tarpon Point, 5951 Silver King Blvd. in Cape Coral.

“The workshop information will be particularly useful to members of the baby-boomer generation, which is approaching retirement,” said firm Principal and Financial Planner Tom Uhler, one of the workshop facilitators. “We provide easy-to-understand information designed to clear up confusion about Social Security issues. We have held similar sessions and found that having accurate knowledge lowers stress levels for those facing retirement, either in the near future or in several years.”

Uhler has more than three decades of experience in financial services in Southwest Florida and has qualified from 1995 through 2012 for the Raymond James Financial Services Executive Council, whose membership is based primarily on assets under management, education, credentials and fiscal-year production. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association of Southwest Florida and serves on the executive board and endowment investment committee for Southwest Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America. Uhler also sits on the board of directors for Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades. He chairs the United Way 2011-12 fundraising campaign.

Co-facilitator for the workshop will be Certified Financial Planner Scott Schatzle, who has eight years of financial-services experience and is one of roughly 55,000 Certified Financial Planners in the U.S. He served on the boards of the Financial Planning Association of Southwest Florida and the student-run Financial Managers Association at Florida Gulf Coast University, and has been an instructor for the CFP-certification program at FGCU.
