DESCRIPTION:<b>Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention\nNovember 15\, 2009
  - March 14\, 2010</b>\n\nAlias Man Ray presents a fresh look at the div
ersity of Man Ray's body of work\, examining it in the context of his li
felong cover-up of his Russian-Jewish immigrant past and his suppression
of his background. The project marks the first time that his willful co

Theater\n\nWho has the authority to tell another culture’s history? Melv
 ille J. Herskovits\, a second-generation Jewish-American\, redefined the
way the world understands African-American history. At a time when euge
nics dominated the study of race\, Herskovits examined the roots of Afri
can American culture in Africa\, hoping the uncovering of cultural links
would improve black American self-image. Combining his field films made
in Nigeria\, Dahomney\, Mali\, and elsewhere with key moments in anthro
pological and civil rights history\, as well as interviews with current-
day scholars\, Herskovits demonstrates the nuances of identity politics
involved in anthropological study. Who has access to the archives? Who g
ets their research funded? Who is objective and who is self-interested?
When Herskovits\, founder of the white-dominated African American Studie
s Association\, clashes with prominent black intellectual elites\, inclu
ding W.E.B. Du Bois and sociologist E. Franklin Frazier\, the conflict c
alls into question all we know about each other.\n\n<b>Special Guests:</

DESCRIPTION:<b>Alias Man Ray\n6:30pm</b>\n\nThrough his work as painter
 \, photographer\, sculptor\, object maker\, \nand poet\, Man Ray recast t
he concept of artistic identity. As a complex figure who needed to be an
onymous yet not blend in with the crowd\, Man Ray was caught in an ongoi
ng process of concealment and self-assertion. This lecture\, by exhibiti
on curator <b>Mason Klein</b>\, will address how this conundrum became a
critical part of Man Ray’s work. Klein argues this contradiction inform
ed the ways in which Man Ray was able to use his art to reconcile his al

at once assimilated and an outcast. \n\n<a href="http://www.mtn.museumt
