The Fight for Corporate Accountability is a new documentary from the nonprofit group Alliance for Justice. The film tells the story of Diana Levine, a Vermont musician who lost her arm due to improper drug labeling, and the bigger story of the legal issues of federal pre-emption—the presumption that if a medical drug or device has FDA oversight and approval, it precludes a personal from filing in state court for damages.
Science: Jonah Lehrer: 'How We Decide'

Downstairs at Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.
Monday, February 9, 2009, 7:30 – 9pm

Jonah Lehrer discusses his new book, How We Decide. The acclaimed author of Proust Was a Neuroscientist, Lehrer examines the neuroscience of decision-making. Philosophers have long held that the process of deciding is either rational or emotional. Lehrer shows how our best decisions are a finely tuned blend of both feeling and reason—and that the precise mix depends on the situation. Lehrer is an editor at large for Seed Magazine and a contributing editor at Scientific American Mind and NPR’s Radio Lab. Presented as part of the Seattle Science Lectures, with Pacific Science Center and University Book Store.

Tickets are $5 and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com, 800/838-3006 and at the door beginning at 6:30.
Walter Williams: Obama and the Bush Legacy

Downstairs at Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.
Tuesday, February 17, 2009, 7:30 – 9pm

Walter Williams, a distinguished fellow at the UW’s Center for American Politics and Public Policy, gives a talk entitled "Barack Obama and the Challenge of the Bush Legacy." Economists generally hold that market forces, not a president’s policies and concept of governance, are the main influences of this country’s economy. Williams argues that the factors that have brought down the economy this time are the direct result of policies vigorously pursued by Bush (income tax cuts and deregulation) and a dysfunctional approach to governing. William’s most recent book is The Politics of Bad Ideas. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with University Book Store.

Tickets are $5 at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006, and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm. Peter Singer, philosopher Princeton University bioethics professor, argues that for the first time in history, we’re in a position to end extreme poverty throughout the world. In The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty. Singer famous for compelling people to re-consider and even change long-held beliefs (Animal Liberation), offers unconventional thoughts about what an individual can do to end global poverty—explaining how much to give, how to give it, and to which organizations.
Ian Bremmer: 'The Fat Tail'

Ian Bemmer (with co-author Preston Keat) provides a striking analysis of risk management in the turbulent world of global economics in The Fat Tail: The Power of Political Knowledge For Strategic Investing. While the world remains extremely risky for businesses, Bremmer shows how political risks can be identified and managed. Bremmer is the president of the world’s largest risk consultancy and author of the best-selling The J-Curve. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with University Book Store.

Tickets are $5 at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006, and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm.
George Akerlof: Animal Spirits

Downstairs at Town Hall, enter on Seneca Street.
Monday, March 23, 2009, 7:30 – 9pm

The term “animal spirits” was coined by John Maynard Keynes in describing the gloom and despondence leading to the Great Depression. Acclaimed economist George Akerlof (with Robert Shiller) details the pervasive of confidence, fear, bad faith, corruption, a concern for fairness, and the stories we tell ourselves out our economic fortunes on the performance of the macro economy. In Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism, Akerlof shows how Reagonomics, Thatcherism, and the rational expectations revolution failed to account for human psychology, and asserts the necessity of an active government role in economics. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company.

Tickets are $5 at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006, and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm.
Global Rhythms: Lo Cor De La Plana

Great Hall, enter on 8th Avenue
Friday, March 27, 2009, 8 – 10pm

Making their West Coast debut, Lo Cor de la Plana is one of the hottest new groups in world performance touring. This six-man vocal ensemble from France sings their tight, high-energy vocals in the disappearing language of Occitan, the language of Medieval troubadours, accompanied only by the performer’s stomping feet, clapping hands, tambourines and hand drums. Lo Cor de la Plana is based in the city of Marseille and its polyphonic sound reflects that port city’s eclectic culture with hints of Eastern European, Arab and African music, as well as Gregorian chant. Rich overlapping harmonies, unexpected sonorities and an unfettered approach to performance make for transcendent vocalizing with appeal across all cultural boundaries.

Advance tickets are $22/$19 Town Hall members, students & seniors at www.brownpapertickets.com or 800/838-3006. $25/$22 at the door.

Event type: Town Hall Photo Event
