To apply for the Department nomination, submit to the Dept Coordinator by Monday, November 24:

* A completed preliminary application form
* A statement (2-3 pages) describing your program of study and professional goals
* Your vita
* A brief, confidential statement about your academic work from a faculty member who has worked closely with you. Ask the faculty member to email the statement to Katherine Taylor or to give it to you to submit in a sealed envelope.

If you receive the department nomination, we will need the following to complete the application submission:

* Letters of recommendation from the department chair and from two professors who have taught you or worked closely with you
* Your statement (2-3 pages) describing your program of study and professional goals
* Your vita
* A copy of Federal Income Tax Returns for yourself and your spouse (if applicable) for the prior two years.
The Dean of Students will supply the necessary graduate transcripts.

Dept Deadline for Terra Residence in Giverny

ABD graduate students who are ready for an 8-week period of dissertation-writing in attractive, funded circumstances, are encouraged to apply for a departmental nomination for a Terra Summer Residency Fellowship. Dissertation topics must include a significant component on American art (U.S.) or examine artistic interchange between the U.S. and Europe. The fellowship provides housing, workspace, and a $5,000 stipend, for June 15-August 9, 2009, in France at Giverny (the village outside Paris where Monet lived and painted and American painters attracted by Monet settled as well). The program gathers senior and pre-doctoral art historians and studio artists from America and Europe at Giverny, and is meant to support intensive writing and networking. Senior scholars provide mentorship, and informal lectures and seminars offer stimulation.

To apply for nomination, please submit the following materials to the Dept Coordinator by Monday, November 24 at 5pm:
(1) a dissertation proposal written for another grant opportunity or the departmental proposal
(2) a brief statement (a page or less) explaining: how far along the dissertation is now, how far along you expect it to be in June 2009, and your writing goals for the summer.
