poet Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867) has been labeled the very icon of m
odernity\, the scribe of the modern city\, and an observer of an emergin
g capitalist culture. Seeing Double reconsiders this iconic literary fig
ure and his fraught relationship with the nineteenth-century world by ex
amining the way in which he viewed the increasing dominance of modern li
fe. In doing so\, it revises some of our most common assumptions about t
he unresolved tensions that emerged in Baudelaire’s writing during a tim
e of political and social upheaval.

ng atmospheric haze and film projectors\, artist Anthony McCall creates
beautiful\, visually captivating light sculptures that explore ideas of
architecture\, duration and embodiment. Invoking comparisons to natural
formations like waterfalls and moonlight\, McCall’s slowly moving lumino
us projections invite visitors to step into the light\, using their bodi
es to alter the shimmering forms. \n\nExperience the subtle poetics of M
cCall’s rarely exhibited 'Solid Light’ films at a special two-day event
at the University of Chicago\, featuring works on both celluloid film an
d digital media. This exhibition and its related symposium turn a critic
al spotlight onto key moments in an artistic career that has moved with
singular coherence between the aesthetics of an analog and a digital med
ia paradigm.\n\nThe installation You and I\, Horizontal (2005\, dv) will
open the event at The Experimental Station\, a community arts incubator
  in Hyde Park\, Chicago on February 24 & 25\, 6-10 p.m. A special screen
ing of Line Describing a Cone (1973\, 16mm) will take place on Friday at
8pm\, and its digital remake Line Describing a Cone 2.0 (2011\, dv) wil
l be presented at 6:30pm on Saturday. This exhibit is free and open to t

bbs and Howe return for a performance of their third and most recent rel
ease Frolic Architecture. Frolic drops the listener into a soundworld th
at germinates wildly from this most multiple and heterogeneous of Howe's
celebrated collage poems. For long stretches\, it is impossible to sepa
rate Howe's real-time performance of her fragment-strewn text from Grubb
 s's further deformations\, scatterings\, and layerings. These aberrant v
ocalizations are placed in a landscape in which individual pitches pulse
autonomously within thick chords: gravel and cicadas duet. This concert
is co-sponsored with Poem Present and the University of Chicago Departm
ent of English\, Committee on Creative Writing. This concert will take p
 lace in Bond Chapel.
