Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts presents the annual Weissbourd M
emorial Conference on the theme “Ground Stories.”\n\nOur theme focuses o
n groundedness\, a quality located in the stratigraphy – both real and i
magined – beneath a variety of structures\, concepts\, and institutions.
One dimension of the theme considers ground as itself a political and h
istorical variable. How did ground emerge as a definite material through
fields such as geology and archaeology? How do peoples today identify a
n underground stratum as the “first story” of their local residency\, of
ten to exclude co-occupants or to delegitimize competing narratives? Who
decides what counts as the “ground story” of a given institutional arch
itecture\, the entrance and exit for locals and visitors alike\, the lev
el that replicates its perimeter upward? What arbitrations appear or int
ensify when we stand our ground\, loose ground\, break ground\, dig in?
And when do we know that the ground beneath us is shaking – or giving wa
y?\n\nWe also consider “grounding” as that with which claims are credent
ialized and certified. In the moment they are grounded\, propositions re
ckon with protocols of falsification and become candidates for sanction.
  What tacit contingencies – historical\, legal\, political\, poetic\, ec
onomic – govern this moment of grounding across disciplines and eras? Wh
en do we sense that we’ve hit pay dirt\, fathomed an idea\, or run agrou
nd? How do images or texts come to be touted as “fertile ground” in phil
osophy\, religion\, law and science? What stories do we tell at and abou
t grounding moments that fix canons and provide bedrock upon which subse
quent evaluation rests?\n\nThe objective of this conference is not to ju
dge competing claims over what counts as the first stratum of particular
theories\, nations or disciplines\, but rather to call new attention to
those very competitions and the narratives that inform their adjudicati
on. Ground Stories seeks to provide fresh ground to rethink the quarry
ing of truths in fields ranging from history\, politics and economics to
literary studies\, critical theory\, the sciences and beyond.

field of comics in this moment is enjoying unprecedented interest and a
ttention — from the academy\, the press\, museums\, and publishers. But
where is this vital field moving? In a three-day conference featuring a
  range of events--lectures\, conversations\, panels\, and workshops—cart
oonists will come together at the University of Chicago\, long a locatio
 n of word-and-image study\, to take stock of their own ground-breaking w
ork and the future of comics. They will explore comics autobiography an
d journalism\, the current shape of the “graphic novel\,” the power of h
and-drawn images to shock and provoke\, historical print culture\, the n
arrative impact of comics style\, and where and how today’s most excitin
g work is happening.\n\nThe first of its kind\, this historic conference
brings together 17 world-famous cartoonists whose work has defined cont
emporary comics. These internationally acclaimed figures have innovated
the visual styles\, genres\, and formats that make comics popular and fa
scinating\; they set the terms for the possibilities of the form. Speake
