DESCRIPTION:Cinematic Song Crafting: Part II\n\nPart II invites particip
ants to collaborate with Jassie Gift and Vijay Jacob on crafting a film
song in response to a dramatic situation that Jassie himself was given i
n one of his earlier film projects. Drawing on the group's collective bo
dy of musical skill sets and knowledge\, workshop participants will deve
lop a working outline for a song that serves a specific purpose on scree
n\, whether it be advancing the narrative\, amplifying characters or rel
ationships\, evoking wider historical and cultural frames of reference\,
or creating space for fantasy and transgression. The group will have an
opportunity to perform their working song idea as the prelude to Jassie
Gift's concert at Fulton Recital Hall on Friday evening\, February 17.

DESCRIPTION:Song and dance scenes perform several functions in South Ind
ian film. They advance narratives\, amplify characters and relationships
\, evoke wider cultural frames of reference\, and create moments and spa
ces of intimacy on and beyond the screen. Despite the tremendous histori
cal and contemporary relevance of film music in the daily lives of liste
ners\, work on South Asian expressive cultures has only recently begun t
o explore the public and private intimacies film songs engender. With th
e intention of facilitating new research synergies in South Asian film s
tudies\, this symposium brings together a diverse group of scholars who
share a common interest in considering the agents and affects of intimac
ies in songs that span the devotional\, the nostalgic\, the ordinary\, t
he utopian\, and the transgressive in South Indian cinema.

DESCRIPTION:Film music director and playback singer Jassie Gift took Mal
ayalam commercial cinema by storm in 2004 with the songs he composed and
sang for the blockbuster film\, 4 the People\, which was later dubbed i
n three other South Indian languages. In contrast with dominant classica
l film song aesthetics favoring raga-inspired songs with light textures
that emphasize the voice\, he developed a rhythmically driven sound that
combined South Indian vernacular and Black Atlantic stylistic features.
Drawing from sources as varied as Christian hymns\, folk traditions\, a
nd more recent encounters with reggae\, hip-hop\, and rock idioms\, he h
as evolved a highly eclectic musical style along the same vein as world
 renowned innovator A. R. Rahman\, the Oscar-winning composer for the 200
8 film\, Slumdog Millionaire. Gift has since expanded his musical reach

X-TRUMBA-CUSTOMFIELD;NAME="Event Description";ID=1788;TYPE=MultiLine:The
history of religion and science has often been caricatured as strewn wi
th mortal conflict. Early books on the topic\, like John William Draper’
s History of the Conflict between Religion and Science (1874) or Andrew
Dickson White’s A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Chr
istendom (1896) did nothing to dispel this view. The battle between rel
igion and science was\, however\, never as consistently divisive as thes
e books might suggest\, and during the Victorian period there was at tim
es an amicable\, albeit dynamic\, relationship between the two. Like twi
ns separated at birth\, religion and science occasionally rediscovered o
ne another in the booming culture of post-Darwinian Britain\, to find ab
undant similarities and curiously engrossing differences. This is the st
ory of such a relationship\, exploring the influence of evolution within
the science and religion of Victorian Britain\, and then tracing its im
pact on England’s leading music philosopher\, Joseph Goddard (1833–1911)
.\n\nBecause Goddard published regularly throughout most of the Victoria
n period his work provides a helpful glimpse into the development of Bri
tain’s musicological mind. That mind was deeply immersed in contemporary
scientific\, religious and philosophical debates\, not least as they re
late to changes in evolutionary theory. Indeed\, as evolutionary theory
evolved\, so too did musicology. Goddard’s philosophy of music reflects
those changes very clearly\, from his early days as a flag-waving Spence
rian to his later\, more circumspect time as a devout Darwinian. Like ma
ny other intellectuals of the time\, however\, Goddard fell sway to the
Darwinian argument\, abandoning neither his good Spencerian principles n
or his fundamental belief in the spiritual nature of the universe. To th
e extent that Darwin failed to resolve his own religious conflict\, he w
as similarly compromised. Darwin calls it his ‘muddle’\, and it is that
so-called muddle between scientific knowledge and religious belief\, pl
ayed out in vast swathes of Victorian intellectual culture\, which one f
inds represented and resolved in Goddard’s philosophy of music.\n\nThis
paper charts the history of Darwin’s muddle as emblematic of Victorian d
ebates about religion and science\, looking closely at the relationship
of natural theology and the emerging science of evolution. It examines t
he resolution of that relationship into a theology consonant with evolut
ion yet true to its religious roots\, and then situates that theology br
oadly within Goddard’s philosophy of music.
