Event Description: Mendelssohn: Quartet No. 4 in E minor, op. 44, no. 2, Elliott Carter: Quartet No. 5, Brahms: Quartet No. 2 in A minor, op. 51, no. 2, Named Musical America's 2009 Ensemble of the Year, the Pacifica Quartet has become closely associated with American composer Elliott Carter, frequently tackling his entire quartet cycle in one concert. As part of their tribute to the composer, who celebrates his 100th birthday this season, Pacifica will perform his Quartet No. 5, for which they have received glowing reviews and a Grammy Award nomination.

Event Description: Joseph Straus, Music Theorist and Analyst, City University of New York discusses "Normal Hearing" in the second of the Department of Music's Visiting Committee Colloquium Series. As the most regular occasion for all-departmental intellectual dialogue and an opportunity for outside professional contact, the Colloquium Series is an important part of academic life at Chicago. Colloquium lectures are usually given by scholars and composers specially visiting for the purpose, who also meet with students for lunches and socialize with the entire Department at a reception. The Colloquium is taken for credit in years 3 and 4 of a graduate student’s career (or exceptionally in later years), but most members of the Department, including both faculty and students, attend. The Colloquium Series typically includes four or five presentations each quarter, normally held on Friday afternoons.
