Professor Dietz tries to answer this question by showing how a political theoretical point of view decisively attuned to the politics of Aristotle's Politics invites an eminently sensible pluralism (if not a riot) of approaches to the text. When crises of empire, territory, citizenship, and power come to the fore, in other words, and the demands of politics seize our attention at center stage, historical perspectives get effectively commingled with ontological attunements, and contextual and deconstructive maneuvers can readily unite, while the author both commands and is defeated by the circulation of the language of the text., There is no paper for this session. Attendees may wish to read the paper that Professor Dietz will be presenting at the Political Theory Workshop earlier in the day, available one week in advance at ptw.uchicago.edu.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.
More info: lhp.uchicago.edu

Alternatively, one may draw a distinction between a variety of representational modes, and construe the egocentric mode (i.e. the mode of thought or discourse such that the situation of evaluation is the situation of tokening) as a special case. I will spell out the contrast between these two views and discuss some of their consequences.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.

Mary Dietz, Political Theory Workshop

Mary Dietz, Political Theory Workshop

Wilder
House (5811 S. Kenwood Ave.)
Monday, November 30, 2009, 4:30 – 6:30pm

Reception to follow.

Building/Room: Wilder House
Primary Sponsor: Other Sponsor(s)
Other Sponsor(s): Political Science
Presenter(s): Mary Dietz, Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University, Editor, Political Theory: An International Journal of Political Philosophy
Title: Reading Aristotle Politically
Contact Name: Lindsay Knight
Contact E-mail: lindsayk@uchicago.edu
Campus Map: maps.uchicago.edu
Event Description: In reading Aristotle, what happens when we pledge allegiance first and foremost to political questions of significance to contemporary reality rather than starting from a particular school of text interpretation or a specific orientation toward methodological concerns?
