Thomas Land, "Judgment and Construction: On Kant's Conception of the Understanding"

This is then taken to entail that perception involves judging. I argue that the first claim is true, but does not entail the second. Rather, Kant’s theory of spatial representation reveals a kind of concept-use that does not take the form of making a judgment. This can be seen through consideration of Kant’s philosophy of geometry, which contains the fundamental features of his theory of spatial representation. In the paper, I show this by discussing the notion of constructing a concept in pure intuition.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.

Lisa Sideris, "The ‘re-enchantment’ of scientific narratives” , Religion and Ethics Workshop

Swift Hall 106
Friday, February 10, 2012, 12 – 1:50pm

Building/Room: Swift 106
Primary Sponsor: Other Sponsor(s)
Other Sponsor(s): Divinity School
Presenter(s): Lisa Sideris (Indiana)
Title: "The ‘re-enchantment’ of scientific narratives”
Contact Name: Daniel Strand
Contact E-mail: danieldfstrand@gmail.com
Campus Map: maps.uchicago.edu
Event Description: In her current work, Lisa Sideris is focusing on the “re-enchantment” of scientific narratives. She is looking at science-based spirituality, such as the Epic of Evolution/Universe story phenomenon, that proffers scientific (including evolutionary) accounts of the natural world as new “creation stories” with supposed universal ethical and aesthetic appeal. More broadly, her interest is in the way that science and scientists appropriate wonder and enchantment–often at the expense of wonder at the natural world or (more traditional) religious forms of wonder. For example, she has a chapter on Richard Dawkins on wonder, and one on sociobiologist E.O. Wilson’s account of enchantment with science. Part of her objective is to critique what I see as unwholesome or inappropriate forms of scientific wonder, and the displacement of nature as a source and object of wonder in its own right.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.

The Hebrew Bible presents several border schemes of the Land of Israel: some extend from the Nile to the Euphrates, while others are limited to the land of Canaan hemmed in by the Jordan; some emphasize natural boundaries while others delineate the borders according to ritual logic. Each scheme represents a different conception of the sanctity of space and the way divine favor is mapped onto the physical landscape. Thus, in biblical references to natural and political borders the landscape becomes a powerful metaphor for defining and upholding cultural and hermeneutical boundaries. Subsequently, Jews from antiquity to the present day have continued to use the borders of Israel as a broad interpretive category for thinking about a variety of religious, social, and political concerns. Even in their earliest formulations, the borders were not merely geographic markers, but a means of providing spatial representations for discourses of power, legitimization and communal identity with respect to real or imagined neighbors. The goal of this conference is to look at ways in which thinkers – such as Jewish pilgrims, sectarians, settlers, soldiers, poets, artists, politicians, philosophers, and exegetes – have invoked geographical language to articulate a wide spectrum of concerns.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.
More info: lucian.uchicago.edu…

In a Lonely Place - DOC Films

Max Palevsky Cinema in Ida Noyes Hall
Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 7 – 9pm

(Note, this is not a workshop-sponsored event, but it is a nicely-timed way to see the film right before Professor Pippin’s discussion of it on Thursday.)

Building/Room: Ida Noyes Hall
Primary Sponsor: Other Sponsor(s)
Other Sponsor(s): DOC Films
Cost: $5
Contact E-mail: doc@docfilms.org
Campus Map: maps.uchicago.edu
Event Description: Nicholas Ray, 1950 • Nicholas Ray’s adaptation of the novel by the same name was not a commercial success upon initial release—many considered it too dark for mainstream audiences—but was received well critically, and regard for it has only grown in the years since. Bogart, as Dixon Steele, a bitter screenwriter accused of murder, gives one of the finest performances of his career, as does Gloria Grahame, playing the neighbor who loves him, all masterfully directed by Ray. A grim and twisted commentary on Hollywood life, as well as a classic work of film noir, In a Lonely Place showcases some of cinema’s greats in their finest form. 35mm
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.
More info: docfilms.uchicago.edu…

Peter Struck, “Lucky People and the Demonic Tillerman: Aristotle on Divination” - CSAR Lecture

Among his interests is a particular class of people who are able to gather actionable knowledge in non-obvious ways. He observes that some of us appear to have predictive dreams at a higher frequency than others and sets out to explain it. To construct the theory, in his short treatise On Divination by Dreams, he references fundamental ideas from across a wide range of his work: from human psychology and physiology, to basic cosmology, to the fundamental structure of the world. In assessing his view of divination, I will especially draw a connection between it and another phenomenon that Aristotle thinks exists, luckiness. Both are exhibited by people whose built-in self-regulation mechanisms, systems that all living things exhibit, tend to produce good outcomes for them. They lead him to consider a class of innate, non-discursive awareness that some people have, which exists in a system that is paratactic to our "normal" mode of rational information processing, but nevertheless helps us do well. This paper will explore Aristotle's ideas in the context of ancient cognitive theories of divination more generally.
Disability Clause: Please contact the event sponsor(s) if you require assistance to fully participate in this event.
