Veterans Day Ceremony

UIW will honor our nearly 3,000 veteran students, employees and community members in a brief Veterans Day ceremony. Please join us for reflections from current students who are on active duty or veterans, followed by the unveiling of the new veterans memorial plaque and light refreshments. The ceremony includes the display of Living Wall posters honoring students and loved ones who have served in the military. If you would like to include your name or recognize someone on the posters, e-mail Kevin McCollom at mccollom@uiwtx.edu with the name, branch of service and years of service (or era if unsure, i.e. WW II., Cold War, etc.) no later than Nov. 5. They will be honored during the ceremony.

Charter for Compassion

When the Charter is unveiled on November 12th, a week of celebratory activities will take place around the world - in places of religious worship, public spaces, schools, universities and workplaces. We invite you to take part.

Join us to hear of compassion in various traditions, to join online with people around the world inaugurating the charter, and to pray to be people of compassion.

The Charter will proclaim a principle embraced by every faith, and by every moral code. It is often referred to as The Golden Rule. The Golden Rule requires that we use empathy -- moral imagination -- to put ourselves in others' shoes. We should act toward them as we would want them to act toward us. We should refuse, under any circumstance, to carry out actions which would cause them harm.

People of all faiths, all nations, and all backgrounds were invited to submit their own words to the Charter. Over 150,000 people from over 180 countries participated by sharing ideas in this movement initiated by the religious scholar Karen Armstrong.
