Youth in Action! Biojewelry Beading for Breast Cancer

Workshops held EVERY WEDNESDAY 6-9pm throughout May. Activity open to everyone interested, on a walk in basis ---come when you can and stay as long as you wish. No beading experience required. An assortment of tropical ornamental seeds from Brazil and instruction on basic beading techniques and biojewelry design are provided. Pieces made by participants can be purchased or donated to the Biojewelry for Breast Cancer Project of WY Partners of the Americas for future marketing. All proceeds to support a rural mobile mammography program for impoverished women in Goias, Brazil.

Groups may take advantage of these workshops for their community service activities. Let us know ahead of time if you are bringing a group to assure we are set up to accommodate everyone. We can also accommodate requests for workshops at different times and locations to meet the needs of your group.

The “What in the World?” program highlights the excellent and varied fieldwork of three University of Wyoming MA students from the Global and Area Studies program. They will be presenting their work in the Library Inner Circle at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library in Sheridan on Wednesday, May 22 at 5:15 pm, and in the Grizzly Room at the Park County Library in Cody on Thursday, May 23 at 5:15 pm. Jennifer Cheddar (MA International Studies, May 2013) from Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania focused on the plight and discrimination of Haitian Immigrés in the Dominican Republic. Lindsay Olson (MA International Studies/Environment and Natural Resources, May 2013) from Laramie, Wyoming worked with subsistence farming communities in the Peruvian Highlands. Rahimjon Abdugafurov (MA International Studies, May 2013) from Uychi, Namangan, Uzbekistan focused his research on modern Muslim views of Christians and Jews in Uzbekistan. These projects highlight the kind of exciting and innovative projects that international studies’ students at UW complete for their degrees.

Dr. Jean Garrison, Director of Global & Area Studies notes “I’m pleased to show Wyoming the kind of cutting-edge international work our students do, how it shapes their education, but also how it applies to our everyday lives in the United States. Summer Solstice

Every year on the summer solstice at exactly noon, a beam of sunlight illuminates a silver dollar in the center of the Rotunda Gallery. Ray Martin will have his filtered solar telescope set up on the terrace (weather permitting) to allow visitors to see the surface of the sun.
