African American Repertory Theatre: Mahalia! A Gospel Musical

Gottwald Playhouse
600 E. Grace St.
Richmond, VA
Sunday, November 15, 2009, 4 – 6pm

A legend in her own time, Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972) continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of gospel tradition. Her impassioned contralto was one of the most memorable voices of the 20th century, inspiring individuals for whom gospel represented the only true music, as well as the general public.

Throughout her life Jackson remained solely committed to gospel, declining to explore other means of vocal expression. Yet her rousing, soulful, and gut-wrenching renditions drawn from the church repertoire provided the creative impetus for musicians of all stripes, including performers of rhythm and blues and rock and roll. Little Richard called her "the true queen of spiritual singers."

The African-American Repertory Theatre (AART), under the artistic direction of Derome Scott Smith, invites you to experience the unbridled joy and profound spirituality of Mahalia Jackson's life in song with AART's season opener Mahalia: A Gospel Musical.

Tickets - $34-$38.

More info: www.africanamericantheatre.org…

Narrows / Trap Them @ Canal Club

Though outside obligations will most likely relegate the live Narrows experience to a truly rare event, the shared need to exorcise their collective demons fuels the trans-global project.

Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls, Over My Dead Body), Ryan Frederiksen (These Arms Are Snakes, Nineironspitfire), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Rohame, Bullet Union), and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine) are busy men with busy lives. The Narrows project is not meant to define and drive their individual lives.

Rather, the band serves as a respite; a rare opportunity to escape; a vengeful howl from the basest corner of the psyche. In those rare moments when the five men find themselves in the same city, the quintet seizes the opportunity to combine their disparate talents to craft their unique brand of aural malice.

Trap Them - www.myspace.com…

More info: www.thecanalclub.com

Hellblinki and Cripps Puppet Spectacular @ Gallery 5

200 W. Marshall St.
RIchmond, VA
Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 7 – 10pm

The Hellblinki Cripps Puppet Spectacular... presents "The Devil Takes All" (a Frankenstienian trip down the rabbit hole through the dubious wonders of Hellblinkland. Fully orchestrated with the grandious fury such a venture might entail...)

The Hellblinki Sextet in collaboration with acclaimed Puppeteer, Mr. Madison J. Cripps, has created a cutting edge show based around the band’s songs. "The Devil Takes All" follows our hero, Mr. Hatgrin Hellblinki, through an original tale of wonder reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstien, and Candide. Music, Puppetry, and Multimedia are combined to create a world beyond the senses... (Subject matter is dark, though appropriate for all ages, Earplugs may be desired in some venues...)

More info - www.hellblinki.com
Myspace - www.myspace.com…

More info: www.gallery5arts.org

Richmond Comedy Coalition presents: Tryptophan Tastic

Art 6
6 E. Broad St.
RIchmond, VA
Thursday, November 19, 2009, 8 – 10pm

$5.
Jake Ashey (stand-up)Listen with diligence as Jake tells gripping tales of his service in three american wars, his first seven terms as president of the united states, and then the infamous choctaw platypi scandal that ended his administration. Or something along those lines.
The DinnerThe Coalition knows you love your family, but they don’t know you, so they don’t care. They’re conditioning themselves for all the quality-time the holiday season brings with a little pre-emptive preparedness drill.

Mix a few details about your crazy family with some personal experience from the crew, and you’ve got a completely improvised Thanksgiving-themed experience. You’ll laugh because ‘Hey, that IS what my family’s like,’ and at the end of it, you don’t have to sleep on your little cousin’s bunkbed. Sweet.

More info: www.rvacomedy.com

African American Repertory Theatre: Mahalia! A Gospel Musical

Gottwald Playhouse
600 E. Grace St.
Richmond, VA
Friday, November 20, 2009, 8 – 10pm

African American Repertory Theatre: Mahalia! A Gospel Musical

Gottwald Playhouse
600 E. Grace St.
Richmond, VA
Saturday, November 21, 2009, 8 – 10pm

The Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast

The Greater Richmond Convention Center
3rd and Marshall Streets
Richmond, Va.
Thursday, November 26, 2009, 11am – 3pm

Free Admission - Free Parking (3rd and Marshall Street Garage Only)

The Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast is a free event for those in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area. It is an opportunity to come together as a community in celebration of food and fellowship. We invite ALL to our table and hope that you will feel called to join us. We would like to extend a special invitation to the less fortunate, the elderly and those who would otherwise spend Thanksgiving alone.

As an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, it is The Giving Heart's privilege to continue offering this Richmond area tradition. Thank you for allowing us to provide such a wonderful example of community spirit through your donations, attendance and volunteerism.

How The Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast Works -
Guests arrive at the Greater Richmond Convention Center and await entry into the Banquet Hall in our "milling area". In this area, we feature various offerings to guests - and volunteers. Sometimes we have health screenings, complimentary massages, musicians and awareness tables that feature information on community services. You never know what you will find at our event and we're always open to ideas that will help create a "feel good" environment for all.

Upon entering the dining room, guests are greeted by ROTC students who present guests with flowers and escort them to dining room tables. Our tables are decorated with linen service and centerpieces created by many area groups. At each table, our signature Table Host awaits the guests to greet them, bring food and cold beverages to the table, and to actually sit and enjoy food and fellowship. Coffee Service is provided by roving coffee carts.

At the end of the meal, guests are invited to stop in at our Distribution Room where we offer up various necessities such as food bags, warm weather accessories and Giving Bags (toiletries and other essential items that are created by many in our community).

More info: www.thegivingheart.org…
