A legend in her own time, Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972) continues to be celebrated as a pioneer of gospel tradition. Her impassioned contralto was one of the most memorable voices of the 20th century, inspiring individuals for whom gospel represented the only true music, as well as the general public.

Throughout her life Jackson remained solely committed to gospel, declining to explore other means of vocal expression. Yet her rousing, soulful, and gut-wrenching renditions drawn from the church repertoire provided the creative impetus for musicians of all stripes, including performers of rhythm and blues and rock and roll. Little Richard called her "the true queen of spiritual singers."

The African-American Repertory Theatre (AART), under the artistic direction of Derome Scott Smith, invites you to experience the unbridled joy and profound spirituality of Mahalia Jackson's life in song with AART's season opener Mahalia: A Gospel Musical.

An Evening of Storytelling by Friends of the River will include several people who appeared in the newspaper’s James River Journal series, which chronicled the life of the river over a full year, and upon which the book is based.

-David Sligh - a riverkeeper for the upper James who travels the river and many of its tributaries searching for ways to reduce pollution.
-Chris Hull - a river lover who enjoys snorkeling with giant catfish.

-David Everette - a photographer who has captured thousands of images of the river.

The Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast is a free event for those in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area. It is an opportunity to come together as a community in celebration of food and fellowship. We invite ALL to our table and hope that you will feel called to join us. We would like to extend a special invitation to the less fortunate, the elderly and those who would otherwise spend Thanksgiving alone.

As an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, it is The Giving Heart's privilege to continue offering this Richmond area tradition. Thank you for allowing us to provide such a wonderful example of community spirit through your donations, attendance and volunteerism.

How The Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast Works -
Guests arrive at the Greater Richmond Convention Center and await entry into the Banquet Hall in our "milling area". In this area, we feature various offerings to guests - and volunteers. Sometimes we have health screenings, complimentary massages, musicians and awareness tables that feature information on community services. You never know what you will find at our event and we're always open to ideas that will help create a "feel good" environment for all.

Upon entering the dining room, guests are greeted by ROTC students who present guests with flowers and escort them to dining room tables. Our tables are decorated with linen service and centerpieces created by many area groups. At each table, our signature Table Host awaits the guests to greet them, bring food and cold beverages to the table, and to actually sit and enjoy food and fellowship. Coffee Service is provided by roving coffee carts.

At the end of the meal, guests are invited to stop in at our Distribution Room where we offer up various necessities such as food bags, warm weather accessories and Giving Bags (toiletries and other essential items that are created by many in our community).
