DESCRIPTION:Join the cast of Canadian Comedy Award winners Die-Nasty th
is season as they explore the lurid and fragile world of the legendary A
merican playwright Tennessee Williams. In 1950 three contrasting but int
erwoven families inhabit three worlds... the plantation mansion of the f
iery Beaumont family wracked with heartache and dripping in old money an
d lead by the domineering matriarch Lady ... the gritty centre of old Ne
w Orleans where the Keeshka family toils in the abattoirs and factories
and docks... and a short streetcar ride away the widowed Mrs. Windermere
and her grown children struggle to fit in... and never stop talking

DESCRIPTION:The doomed Franklin expedition of 1845-48 haunts the Canadia
n imagination. Ever since the ships Erebus and Terror disappeared on the
ir search for the elusive Northwest Passage\, mystery has surrounded the
fate of Sir John Franklin and his crew. Why did the expedition fail so
spectacularly? What catastrophe felled Franklin and many of his crew–and
what became of the survivors? What role\, if any\, did cannibalism play
? Presenting the results of recent forensic research along with artifact
s recovered from a site where at least 11 crew members perished\, the fe
ature exhibition Echoes in the Ice investigates these and other intrigui
ng questions.\n \n The lost Franklin expedition has long inspired artist
s as well as scientists\, and collages by artist Rik van Glintenkamp for
m an integral part of this exhibition. Incorporating images from histori
c photos and archival documents\, they portray the achievements of 20 in
dividuals\, from Martin Frobisher to Roald Amundsen\, who shared Frankli
n's passion for Arctic exploration. The exhibition also examines how con
temporary researchers are investigating the impact of climate change on
the same landscapes that held Franklin's ships ice-bound some 160 years
ago.\n \n A co-production of Gone West Productions and the Canada Scienc
e and Technology Museum\, with the generous support of Natural Resources
Canada and Parks Canada Agency.\n Une co-production de Gone West Produc

DESCRIPTION:In 2010\, David Janzen ventured out on a series of trips to
landfills across Alberta. He took photographs\, made sketches and return
ed home to his studio to create a new series of paintings. The resulting
work featured piles of neatly sorted debris in front of often sublime v
istas of the surrounding landscape. This series by Janzen arose from ear
lier work where the artist focused on infrastructure seen up against the
sky: security cameras\, flood lights\, etc. Other works represent man-m
ade disasters: the nose of a crashed plane or an impossibly tall dam abo
ut to crack. For Janzen\, respect for innovation\, development and progr
ess is intertwined with dread. A sense of dystopia is combined with a se
nse that\, in Janzen’s words\, “things on this Earth are unfolding as th
ey should.” This new series of paintings approaches the subject matter o
f waste management with curiosity and\, ultimately\, calmness as detritu
s is juxtaposed with the terrain that it may\, eventually\, overtake.

DESCRIPTION:In 1975\, the Ernest E. Poole Foundation donated 90 works of
art to the Edmonton Art Gallery\, now known as the Art Gallery of Alber
ta. This gift remains the most significant contribution ever made to the
AGA’s collection of historical Canadian art. It includes major works fr
om the late 19th century by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven\, as well
as mid-century modernists and renowned westerners such as James Henders
on. These paintings had been originally collected by Ernest E. Poole\, w
ho passed away some ten years before the donation was given to the Galle
ry under the direction of his son John. In celebration of the Poole lega
cy\, this exhibition features key works from the 1975 gift. It will cons

DESCRIPTION:Both harbinger of danger and symbol of pride\, the Dutch lan
dscape and its typical motifs\, such as the canals that criss-cross the
country and the windmill\, have been a source of infinite inspiration fo
r the Dutch artists who have captured their essence and character over t
he centuries. Dutch Landscapes from Rembrandt to Van Gogh explores the e
mergence of this landscape tradition in the early 17th century\, its blo
ssoming during the Golden Age and its extension into the 18th and 19th c
enturies. Some of the greatest Dutch artists\, such as Jan van Goyen\, J
acob van Ruisdael and Rembrandt—represented in the exhibition with four
of his famous etchings—brilliantly contributed to the rise of landscape
as a full blown pictorial genre. These developments were to influence th
e course of art history in the Netherlands\, which was a strong trading
\, military\, scientific and artistic power. The selection of the drawing
s and prints by Dutch artists portraying landscapes inspired by their co
untry culminates with a signature artwork from the National Gallery of C
anada collection\, Vincent van Gogh’s drawing The Swamp. Executed in 188
1\, very early in his career during his Dutch period\, this rare view of
a Dutch site sketched from nature displays Van Gogh’s deep love of the
landscape of the Netherlands and the country’s pictorial tradition.

f overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outs

Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals
about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsider
s for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and
fit in at the same time.\n \nThe William Finn/Rachel Sheinkin comedy ope
ned on Broadway in the spring of 2005\, where it delighted audiences\, r
eceived critical acclaim\, and earned three Drama Desks (Outstanding Boo
 k of a Musical\, Outstanding Director of a Musical\, and Outstanding Ens

nd musical direction by Sally Hunt\, with choreography by Jake Hastey.

DESCRIPTION:Your body is a symphony\, with millions of finely tuned inst
ruments\, playing in perfect concert. As time goes by\, age changes the
instruments\, both by design and in reaction to our own choices. The stu
nning new exhibition Body Worlds &amp\; The Cycle of Life\, presented by
the Health Sciences Association of Alberta\, is your opportunity to pee
r behind the curtain and see the concert inside yourself as you've never
seen it before.\n \n Making its Canadian debut\, this new exhibition fr
om physician and pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens presents th
e body throughout the human life cycle and across the arc of aging. More
than 200 plastinates—real human specimens preserved through Dr. von Hag
ens' invention\, the remarkable process called Plastination—reveal the h
uman body in all its stages\, across youth\, growth\, maturity and advan
ced age\, and in all its conditions\, from health to distress to disease
.\n \n This new exhibition also features three special perspectives: a l
ook at conception and pre-natal development\; a display about sight and
vision\, including the vision challenges faced by artists Claude Monet a
nd Edgar Degas\; and a study of the geographic regions where the oldest
living people tend to live\, and the characteristics they have been foun
d to share. Visiting Body Worlds &amp\; The Cycle of Life is an unparall
eled experience that will have you thinking and talking about your healt
h\, your vitality and the complicated wonder that is the human body.

DESCRIPTION:CFCW is proud to present Joe Diffie &amp\; Mark Chesnutt in
concert May 21st at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.\n \n Joe Di
ffie\n \n Born in Tulsa\, OK in 1958\, Joe got his first Gig when he was
only 4 years old performing in his Aunt's country band. He continued to
play music after dropping out of medical school and working in the oil
fields and at a foundry\, performing in Gospel and Bluegrass bands. In 1
986 he moved to Nashville to work for Gibson and record demos\, some of
which were later recorded by Ricky Van Shelton\, Billy Dean\, and Alabam
 a. In 1990\, Diffie was signed to Epic Records and released his first al
bum "A Thousand Winding Roads"\, which had 4 singles that topped the cha
rts\, including "New Way (To Light Up An Old Flame)".\n \n Joe Diffie is
  still going strong\, after 10 albums\, a Grammy\, countless hits\, incl
uding "Third Rock From the Sun"\, "Pick Up Girl" and John Deere Green"\,
and a number of upcoming tour dates\, he shows no signs of stopping now
!\n \n Mark Chesnutt\n \n Mark Chesnutt kicked off his music career at a
n early age. Born in Texas in 1963\, he grew up listening to his father'
s extensive country collection and learning to play guitar and drums. At
15 he started playing gigs with his father who started taking him to Na
shville to start recording when he turned 17.\n \n Over the next 10 year
s\, he released 8 singles on a few smaller labels\, until finally being
signed by MCA records in 1990 and releasing the album "Too Cold At Home"
\, from which "Brother Jukebox" was released and hit number 1 on the Bil
lboard charts. His next few albums were just as successful featuring sin
gles like "Bubba Shot The Jukebox"\, "It Sure Is Monday"\, "I Just Wante
d You To Know" and "Going Through The Big D". Chesnutt continues to tour
to this day\, and after 17 albums he truly is one of Country's best.

DESCRIPTION:As part of their support of the Art Gallery of Alberta’s New
Vision capital campaign\, the Mitchell family donated funds to establis
h ongoing acquisitions for the AGA’s permanent collection. Focusing on w
orks of art by living Canadian artists\, the Mitchell Endowment allows t
he AGA to build its collection while also supporting artists. This exhib
ition features the first works that were acquired in 2012 with funds fro
m the Mitchell Endowment. The works in the exhibition are by five Albert
a artists from across the province: Robin Arseneault\, Calgary\; David H
 offos\, Lethbridge\; Chris Millar\, Calgary\; Royden Mills\, Edmonton an
d Laura St. Pierre\, Grand Prairie—all of whom have contributed to the A
GA’s exhibition history\, but were under-represented in our collection.
\n \n The AGA thanks John and Maggie Mitchell for their contribution to t
he AGA’s New Vision capital campaign and for their initiative in establi
shing this important endowment\, which will enable us to continue to bui
ld our collection for years to come.

DESCRIPTION:From the 1960s on\, the piano has become a subject of great
interest to artists\, who have approached it in unconventional and often
surprising ways. A part of the social unrest and political upheaval of
the time\, many questioned the models of culture that had come to be ass
ociated with the piano\, with the canons of European classical music\, t
he idea of expressive subjectivity and the role that the piano played fo
r a middle class aspiring to high culture.\n \n The works in this exhibi
tion\, The Piano\, can be seen to continue the experimental and iconocla
stic tendencies of the post war avant-garde\, with projects that interro
gate the piano and its cultural and social associations. Some of the art
ists seek to produce new and innovative sounds\, increasing the piano’s
sonic capacity in unusual ways\, while others transform it into a mute s
culptural object\, thereby negating its function as an instrument of mus
ic and popular entertainment altogether. The image of a silenced or even
destroyed piano\, may speak to the recent history of the piano and its
loss of status over the latter part of the 20th century. Once a fixture
of many middle and upper class living rooms\, today\, the piano\, as an
instrument made of wood and iron\, is in great decline. It has been disp
laced by successive technological innovations including the phonograph\,
radio\, electric keyboard and most recently the computer synthesizer an
d iPad keyboard.\n \n The Piano features work by 13 contemporary artists
\, which take the form of video projections\, performances and sculptura
l installations\, and examine the image of the pianist\, from the virtuo
so to the DIY amateur\, and the role of the piano\, from a hub of bar ro
om entertainment to an instrument of reverie and personal salvation.\n
\n Artists include: Dean Baldwin\, Patrick Bernatchez\,&nbsp\; Stan Dougl
 as\, Rodney Graham\, Carol Itter\, Tim Lee\, George Maciunas\, Gordon Mo
 nahan\, Katie Paterson\, Rober Racine\, Michael Snow\, Charles Stankieve
ch\, Euan Macdonald.\n \n \n The Piano is organized by the Art Gallery o
f Alberta and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery\, Hart House and curated b
y Barbara Fischer and Catherine Crowston.

DESCRIPTION:A film by Charlotte Zwerin\n USA | 90 minutes | 1988\n \n Th
is documentary of the late jazz great Thelonius Monk (1917-1982) uses fo
otage taken from 14 hours of European concert performances filmed in 196
7-68 by Christian Blackwood. From his childhood in New York City’s San J
uan Hill\, Monk grew up to become one of the most innovative jazz pianis
ts of all time. Monk ushered in the bebop era of the 1940s and influence
d such contemporary greats as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Interv
iews with Monk’s manager Harry Colomby and Monk’s son and namesake shed
light on the character of the jazz giant. Executive producer Clint Eastw
ood got the idea for the project while researching the life of Charlie P
arker for his film Bird. (Dan Pavlides\, Rovi)

DESCRIPTION:For the second year in a row\, the season begins with a bran
d new play by Lemoine\, and this time it’s a gleefully suspenseful intri
gue in the style of Evelyn Strange and The Velvet Shock. A man makes a c
hoice. A woman responds to it. Before long\, stillness gives way to moti
on\, thought becomes deed\, and dangerous variables give way to alarming
certainties. The captivatingly conspiratorial quartet on board for this
thrill ride is comprised of Jeff Haslam\, Davina Stewart\, Eric Wigston
\, and Beth Graham\, in an audacious Teatro debut.\n \n Jeff Haslam star
s as Preston Tate\, an unassuming geographer whose visit to his trusted
local dry cleaner precipitates a chain reaction of events which lead to
genuine mayhem at the Holiday Inn on Gateway Boulevard. Also drawn into
the maelstrom are Teatro leading lady Davina Stewart as Preston’s wife G
 wen\, a volatile homebody\, and Eric Wigston as Tim\, a menswear clerk w
ith an ear to the ground and an eye on the main chance.\n The fourth mem
ber of this captivatingly conspiratorial quartet is Beth Graham\, making
an audacious Teatro debut as Giuliana Hirsch\, an enterprising and exot
ic visitor untroubled by conventional scruples.\n \n Playwright Stewart
Lemoine directs\, with an eye to deliberate misdirection\, while costume
designer Leona Brausen clothes everyone as sleekly as possible for maxi
mum velocity. Set and lighting designer Bobby Smale conjures the dangero
usly alluring world of the South Edmonton shopping plaza\, and eagle-eye
d stage manager Rachel Rudd ensures that that no thread of this tightly
woven arabesque is allowed to dangle.\n \n \n Performances are Tuesday t
hrough Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm\, with additional matinee performanc
es on Saturdays at 2pm.\n \n Ticket prices are $28 for adults and $23 fo
r students and seniors on Wednesday through Saturday evenings. All seats
on Saturday afternoons are $16\, and Tuesday evenings are\n Pay-What-Yo
