Diana, A Celebration, the award-winning exhibition that chronicles the life and work of one of the most remarkable women of our time – Diana, Princess of Wales.

The exhibit, which will cover almost 7,000 square feet, contains 150 objects throughout nine galleries. Among the items are Princess Diana’s magnificent royal wedding gown with its 25 foot long train, 28 of her designer dresses, family heirlooms, personal mementos, paintings and rare home movies and photos. Also in the exhibit are the original text of the Earl Spencer’s moving tribute to his sister at the funeral in Westminster Abbey and books of condolences left by people throughout the world.

On loan from Althorp Estate, the Spencer family’s 500-year-old ancestral home in England, Diana, A Celebration, chronicles the life of Diana and invites people to share the milestones of her many roles: as a youngster, schoolgirl and athlete; as the shy kindergarten teacher who captured the heart of the prince and the public; as the young, ravishing royal bride; as the devoted mother, sister and daughter; and as the tireless charity advocate and spokeswoman.

Diana, A Celebration, is produced by Arts and Exhibitions International and all profits generated from the exhibition at Althorp and overseas go to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. While the exhibit has travelled extensively around the United States since it was established in 1998, it has only had one other Canadian stop and that was in Toronto a decade ago.

In 2010, David Janzen ventured out on a series of trips to landfills across Alberta. He took photographs, made sketches and returned home to his studio to create a new series of paintings. The resulting work featured piles of neatly sorted debris in front of often sublime vistas of the surrounding landscape. This series by Janzen arose from earlier work where the artist focused on infrastructure seen up against the sky: security cameras, flood lights, etc. Other works represent man-made disasters: the nose of a crashed plane or an impossibly tall dam about to crack. For Janzen, respect for innovation, development and progress is intertwined with dread. A sense of dystopia is combined with a sense that, in Janzen’s words, “things on this Earth are unfolding as they should.” This new series of paintings approaches the subject matter of waste management with curiosity and, ultimately, calmness as detritus is juxtaposed with the terrain that it may, eventually, overtake.

The Art Gallery of Alberta presents: The Bequest - Ernest E. Poole and the AGA Collection

In 1975, the Ernest E. Poole Foundation donated 90 works of art to the Edmonton Art Gallery, now known as the Art Gallery of Alberta. This gift remains the most significant contribution ever made to the AGA’s collection of historical Canadian art. It includes major works from the late 19th century by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, as well as mid-century modernists and renowned westerners such as James Henderson. These paintings had been originally collected by Ernest E. Poole, who passed away some ten years before the donation was given to the Gallery under the direction of his son John. In celebration of the Poole legacy, this exhibition features key works from the 1975 gift. It will consider how this bequest has shaped exhibiting at the Gallery and the discourse of Canadian art history to which it has contributed.

Both harbinger of danger and symbol of pride, the Dutch landscape and its typical motifs, such as the canals that criss-cross the country and the windmill, have been a source of infinite inspiration for the Dutch artists who have captured their essence and character over the centuries. Dutch Landscapes from Rembrandt to Van Gogh explores the emergence of this landscape tradition in the early 17th century, its blossoming during the Golden Age and its extension into the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the greatest Dutch artists, such as Jan van Goyen, Jacob van Ruisdael and Rembrandt—represented in the exhibition with four of his famous etchings—brilliantly contributed to the rise of landscape as a full blown pictorial genre. These developments were to influence the course of art history in the Netherlands, which was a strong trading, military, scientific and artistic power. The selection of the drawings and prints by Dutch artists portraying landscapes inspired by their country culminates with a signature artwork from the National Gallery of Canada collection, Vincent van Gogh’s drawing The Swamp. Executed in 1881, very early in his career during his Dutch period, this rare view of a Dutch site sketched from nature displays Van Gogh’s deep love of the landscape of the Netherlands and the country’s pictorial tradition.

As part of their support of the Art Gallery of Alberta’s New Vision capital campaign, the Mitchell family donated funds to establish ongoing acquisitions for the AGA’s permanent collection. Focusing on works of art by living Canadian artists, the Mitchell Endowment allows the AGA to build its collection while also supporting artists. This exhibition features the first works that were acquired in 2012 with funds from the Mitchell Endowment. The works in the exhibition are by five Alberta artists from across the province: Robin Arseneault, Calgary; David Hoffos, Lethbridge; Chris Millar, Calgary; Royden Mills, Edmonton and Laura St. Pierre, Grand Prairie—all of whom have contributed to the AGA’s exhibition history, but were under-represented in our collection.

The AGA thanks John and Maggie Mitchell for their contribution to the AGA’s New Vision capital campaign and for their initiative in establishing this important endowment, which will enable us to continue to build our collection for years to come.

From the 1960s on, the piano has become a subject of great interest to artists, who have approached it in unconventional and often surprising ways. A part of the social unrest and political upheaval of the time, many questioned the models of culture that had come to be associated with the piano, with the canons of European classical music, the idea of expressive subjectivity and the role that the piano played for a middle class aspiring to high culture.

The works in this exhibition, The Piano, can be seen to continue the experimental and iconoclastic tendencies of the post war avant-garde, with projects that interrogate the piano and its cultural and social associations. Some of the artists seek to produce new and innovative sounds, increasing the piano’s sonic capacity in unusual ways, while others transform it into a mute sculptural object, thereby negating its function as an instrument of music and popular entertainment altogether. The image of a silenced or even destroyed piano, may speak to the recent history of the piano and its loss of status over the latter part of the 20th century. Once a fixture of many middle and upper class living rooms, today, the piano, as an instrument made of wood and iron, is in great decline. It has been displaced by successive technological innovations including the phonograph, radio, electric keyboard and most recently the computer synthesizer and iPad keyboard.

The Piano features work by 13 contemporary artists, which take the form of video projections, performances and sculptural installations, and examine the image of the pianist, from the virtuoso to the DIY amateur, and the role of the piano, from a hub of bar room entertainment to an instrument of reverie and personal salvation.

Artists include: Dean Baldwin, Patrick Bernatchez, Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham, Carol Itter, Tim Lee, George Maciunas, Gordon Monahan, Katie Paterson, Rober Racine, Michael Snow, Charles Stankievech, Euan Macdonald.

The Piano is organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House and curated by Barbara Fischer and Catherine Crowston.

In 2005 the Government House Foundation revived an elegant tradition from earlier days when it began hosting High Teas.

High Teas are held in spring (April or May) and toward Christmas (late November or early December). The event is advertised and tickets are sold to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. High Teas, like the annual New Year’s Day Levee, are among the few events at Government House that are open to the public.

For the second year in a row, the season begins with a brand new play by Lemoine, and this time it’s a gleefully suspenseful intrigue in the style of Evelyn Strange and The Velvet Shock. A man makes a choice. A woman responds to it. Before long, stillness gives way to motion, thought becomes deed, and dangerous variables give way to alarming certainties. The captivatingly conspiratorial quartet on board for this thrill ride is comprised of Jeff Haslam, Davina Stewart, Eric Wigston, and Beth Graham, in an audacious Teatro debut.

Jeff Haslam stars as Preston Tate, an unassuming geographer whose visit to his trusted local dry cleaner precipitates a chain reaction of events which lead to genuine mayhem at the Holiday Inn on Gateway Boulevard. Also drawn into the maelstrom are Teatro leading lady Davina Stewart as Preston’s wife Gwen, a volatile homebody, and Eric Wigston as Tim, a menswear clerk with an ear to the ground and an eye on the main chance.
The fourth member of this captivatingly conspiratorial quartet is Beth Graham, making an audacious Teatro debut as Giuliana Hirsch, an enterprising and exotic visitor untroubled by conventional scruples.

Playwright Stewart Lemoine directs, with an eye to deliberate misdirection, while costume designer Leona Brausen clothes everyone as sleekly as possible for maximum velocity. Set and lighting designer Bobby Smale conjures the dangerously alluring world of the South Edmonton shopping plaza, and eagle-eyed stage manager Rachel Rudd ensures that that no thread of this tightly woven arabesque is allowed to dangle.

Performances are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, with additional matinee performances on Saturdays at 2pm.

Ticket prices are $28 for adults and $23 for students and seniors on Wednesday through Saturday evenings. All seats on Saturday afternoons are $16, and Tuesday evenings are
Pay-What-You-Can.

Playwright Linda Wood Edwards comes by her understanding of the subject matter honestly. While helping her mother Ethel Wood settle into such a facility here in Edmonton, Wood Edwards started to observe the struggles and routines of life there. We are accustomed to thinking of life in such places as either dreary or dull, but Wood Edwards found the residents – joyful or depressed, passive or fiercely fighting for every scrap of independence – made for compelling stories. Capturing friendship and ritual in comedy is nothing new for Wood Edwards, who received a Sterling Award nomination for her first play Spring Alibi. True Grid, telling the story of a CFL season from the fans’ perspective, was remounted as part of the 2010 Grey Cup Festival. Support Ho’s is a celebration of old friendships that grow and evolve over a series of weekly breakfasts at the much-missed Sidetrack Café.

In Four in the Crib, Wood Edwards reminds us that people are just as quirky, hilarious, and passionate at eighty as at eighteen. Probably more so. The play packs death, romance, dark secrets, and bodily function jokes into a solid hour-and-a-bit of comedy. Four in the Crib stars Linda Cornell, Judy McFerran, Kieran O’Callaghan, and Jan Streader, and is directed by David Cheoros: together, they bring more than a hundred years of theatre experience to the production.

Northern Sabbatical Productions brings back its aged-to-perfection comedy, June 4 - 9, 2013. Four in the Crib interweaves the lives of four eighty-somethings in an assisted living facility, shared over a series of weekly cribbage games. This show had great audiences and wonderful reviews at the 2012 Edmonton Fringe Festival and is back by popular demand in honour of Seniors’ Week and the Creative Age Festival.

Playwright Linda Wood Edwards comes by her understanding of the subject matter honestly. While helping her mother Ethel Wood settle into such a facility here in Edmonton, Wood Edwards started to observe the struggles and routines of life there. We are accustomed to thinking of life in such places as either dreary or dull, but Wood Edwards found the residents – joyful or depressed, passive or fiercely fighting for every scrap of independence – made for compelling stories. Capturing friendship and ritual in comedy is nothing new for Wood Edwards, who received a Sterling Award nomination for her first play Spring Alibi. True Grid, telling the story of a CFL season from the fans’ perspective, was remounted as part of the 2010 Grey Cup Festival. Support Ho’s is a celebration of old friendships that grow and evolve over a series of weekly breakfasts at the much-missed Sidetrack Café.

In Four in the Crib, Wood Edwards reminds us that people are just as quirky, hilarious, and passionate at eighty as at eighteen. Probably more so. The play packs death, romance, dark secrets, and bodily function jokes into a solid hour-and-a-bit of comedy. Four in the Crib stars Linda Cornell, Judy McFerran, Kieran O’Callaghan, and Jan Streader, and is directed by David Cheoros: together, they bring more than a hundred years of theatre experience to the production.
