Sailor Tattooing

One of the greatest traditions in the art of tattooing is the military design -- especially those of the Navy! This tradition began before the 1700's when Captain Cook discovered the tattooed natives of the South Pacific. Tattooing has been linked with the seafaring lives of the navies of the world for centuries. Cook's sailors were looking for the perfect souvenirs of their journey into foreign lands, and tattooing was the most exotic. This exhibition will show sailor tattooing from around the world.

Around his best-known character, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, Updike wove with a lucid eye and enviable craft a tapestry of personal, marital, and societal angst. Rabbit Redux (1971) was Updike's post-mortem of the late 1960s, a strange and disorienting trip for Rabbit.
Like the Portuguese painter Paula Rego, Ms. Ingersol likes viewers to make up their own stories about her paintings. Ms. Ingersol orchestrates her paintings. Recruiting friends as models, renting costumes and seeking out unusual settings from old buildings to former theatres. She photographs these tableaux viveants, and then builds her bold canvases from the prints. Her latest series of paintings reflect her background in music, and several references are made to operas.

This is the third of the Lowake, Texas series from Del Shores, the author of Daddy's Dyin' (Who's Got the Will?) and Cheatin'. It's the day before Christmas Eve and The Daughters of the Lone Star State are having their annual meeting in tiny Lowake, Texas. Few prospective members show up, which is just as well- the embittered president of the organization wants only women who think exactly as she does.

Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming

It's October, 1945, and the gospel-singing Sanders Family is back together again. The war is over and America's years of prosperity are just beginning. But there's another kind of rite of passage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. He's been called to preach in Texas, and he's already bought a ten-gallon hat and is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Rejoin all your favorite Sanders Family members.
