Bertha and the New Waterfront Tunnel - SOLD OUT

Tuesday, June 4, 2013, 5:30 – 8:30pm

The massive and much-talked-about machine that will bore under Seattle to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct has a name, and it’s “Bertha.” You’ll see her up-close on our walking tour that begins at milepost 31’s information center in Pioneer Square. Cultural resources expert Kevin Bartoy will provide a brief talk about archaeology and the role of archaeologists during construction. This is a chance to see some recovered historical items that provide a view into the area’s past. You’ll also look at a model of Bertha before taking a short walk to view the real deal from a platform near the state Route 99 tunnel project work zone. Our guides with the state Department of Transportation will be there to answer questions about pit digging and to highlight Bertha’s amazing capabilities. The viewing platform overlooks the launch pit where she begins her mole-like dig. Bertha will perform the dual feat of boring and building the tunnel walls simultaneously. After the tour, we’ll head a few blocks north up 1st Avenue to the Alexis Hotel Library Bistro for a dinner menu prepared specially for our event. Just below the street, engineers carefully calculated Bertha’s dig to protect the buildings, some historic, including the Alexis Hotel. At the bistro, enjoy Tunnel salad, your choice of themed entrées, and finish with a mud pie dessert. Your entrée choices are: Bertha Beef, Construction Chicken, or Portal Pasta. Event includes private tour with guides and a three-course dinner. Let us know your choice of entrée when you reserve. No-host bar available at Library Bistro. Important note: Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are mandatory for the viewing platform. The tour takes place within an active construction zone, and the viewing platform is not recommended for visitors with limited mobility. You must be able to walk over uneven ground and climb up and down 50 stairs. Ages 13+. Completed liability form required.
This event has sold out. Please contact Club Programs to be waitlisted.

Cancel by May 24

Type of Event: In the Know
Price: $45
Reserve: 206.464.3060 or clubprograms@wac.net

Flushed With Pride: Brightwater Treatment Facility

Thursday, June 27, 2013, 11am – 4pm

Woodinville’s state-of-the-art Brightwater Center is a shiny new sewage treatment plant that aims to change our thinking about water usage. At a cost of more than $1.8 billion, it’s the most expensive wastewater endeavor in King County’s history and was dubbed “The Taj Mahal of Sewage” by Seattle Times writer Danny Westneat. Join us as we learn how much water we use, the process for cleaning it, and how wastewater can be recycled into reusable water, energy, and nutrients for plants and soil. You’ll be inspired to use water more efficiently and to help protect Puget Sound. Our private motor coach will first take us to lunch at the nearby Maltby Cafe, famous for its bountiful food offerings. Then we’ll have a two-hour van and walking tour of the 114-acre treatment plant, art installations, and landscaped grounds complete with streams and miles of trails. See everything you’ve been told not to—or didn’t mean to—flush, trapped by large perforated screens. Witness the nation’s most advanced odor-control system. View integrated artwork, including a sparkling hand-blown glass installation inspired by the microbacteria that scrub dirty water at the plant. There is also a fully equipped education center with hands-on exhibits that explain the full process of wastewater treatment. Event includes a round-trip motor coach from the WAC, lunch, and tour.

cancel by June 20

Type of Event: Escapades, Family Events, In the Know
Price: $50
Reserve: 202.464.3060 or clubprograms@wac.net

Modern Manners for Modern Kids

Monday, July 15, 2013, 4 – 6pm

Proper manners travel far beyond “please” and “thank you.” Today’s generation must look beyond table manners and exhibit social etiquette, as well. Modern Manners for Modern Kids will focus on all aspects of table and social manners. Arden Clise of Clise Etiquette will use her experience as an etiquette consultant, radio host, and columnist to teach young WAC members the importance of everyday etiquette. Class starts with social manners, including making and receiving introductions, telephone and email conversations, etiquette in public places, as well as courtesies that count. Then you’ll explore the traditional ways to set a table, handle silverware, eat difficult foods, and interact at a meal. With more than 25 years of experience, Clise will give each child the knowledge and tools to understand how to act and why, which in the end gives the child self-confidence and a sense of comfort in any setting—either with peers or adults. Modern Manners For Modern Kids includes two hours of class, a two-course dinner, and printed material for review at home. Recommended for ages 7–12.

4–6 pm; cancel by July 1

Type of Event: Family Events
Price: $75
Reserve: 206.464.3060 or clubprograms@wac.net

U.S. Coast Guard Tour

Thursday, July 25, 2013, 10:30am – 2:30pm

The primary mission of the U.S. Coast Guard has always been and always will be safety on our waterways. Located near Safeco Field, Seattle’s Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) oversees 460,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean, from California to Canada. Meet at Pier 36 at the U.S. Coast Guard Integrated Support Command. We’ll look into the daily operations of VTS, which monitors the position and movement of all vessel traffic. You’ll learn why the VTS was created and how it has evolved. After a tour, we’ll join the staff for lunch in the galley. Then go aboard and tour a high-endurance cutter—or other ship in port—to see what it’s like to be part of a maritime mission. We’ll end our visit in the on-site museum to discover a wealth of memorabilia from the Coast Guard’s history, including ship models, uniforms, and sea stories. Comfortable nonskid shoes are a must. Women should wear slacks for climbing ship ladders. Children must be 8 or older and accompanied by an adult.
6th Annual Scavenger Hunt on Lake Union

Friday, July 26, 2013, 6 – 9pm

The WAC’s most popular annual summer event saw an upset last year when the three-time champion team was defeated. Will the team regain its title, or will a new team cruise to victory? Begin by selecting someone to be captain and pilot of your 10-person electric Duffy boat before heading into a heated (but friendly) competition afloat. As you race around Lake Union, your mission is to solve a list of crafty clues and puzzling riddles to determine the identity of items visible from the lake. You have two hours to complete the task. The first boat to return with the most correct answers wins a prize. Each year the scavenger hunt has a new set of clues, so everyone has a fair shot. Since you’ll be burning up brain fuel, plentiful platters of finger foods, sweets, bottled water, and soft drinks are included onboard. You also may bring your own beer or wine to help energize your creative thinking. Put together your own team of 10, or we’ll partner you at the dock when we meet on the west side of Lake Union. Remember, it’s not about who wins or loses, it’s about how much fun you have while playing the game. This event is an entertaining WAC tradition perfect for singles, couples and groups.

cancel by July 12

Type of Event: Arts & Entertainment, Escapades, Family Events, WAC Signature Event
Price: $65 per person
Reserve: 206.464.3060 or clubprograms@wac.net

This cheeky farce explodes across the stage with damsels in distress, a sexy Pirate King, a delightfully dotty Major General, and a score you will hum all the way home.

The show runs July 11 - August 4. Best tickets are for this date and dates listed elsewhere in this section. Other performances may be available upon request. Noncancelable/nonrefundable

Type of Event: Family Events, Tickets
Price: $80 to $104, based on date and seating location
Reserve: 206.464.3060 or clubprograms@wac.net
