DESCRIPTION:May 21\, 2012 – Aug 19\, 2012\n\nThe first exhibition to exp
lore the extraordinarily rich visual culture of India’s last royal famil
ies\, Maharaja: The Splendors of India’s Great Kings spans the period fr
om the early 18th century to the mid-20th century\, bringing together ov
er 200 magnificent objects. It examines the changing role of the maharaj
as (“great kings”) within a social and historical context\, and reveals
how their patronage of the arts\, both in India and Europe\, resulted in
splendid and beautiful objects symbolic of royal status\, power and ide
ntity.\n\nThe power of an Indian king was expressed most spectacularly i
n the grand public processions that celebrated royal events and religiou
s festivities. Riding a richly ornamented elephant or horse\, the ruler
was lavishly dressed and jeweled\, and surrounded by attendants bearing
symbolic attributes of kingship: a royal parasol\, fans and staffs of au
thority. \n\nThese traditional royal elements mingle with more modern ri
ches\, including spectacular commissions from Europe’s most elegant fash
ion houses\, as the exhibition traces the fascinating history of the shi
fting power between India’s dynasties\, the rise of British colonial sup
remacy\, and the move toward Indian independence.

DESCRIPTION:The Relacksachian - http://www.relacksachian.com/fr_home.cfm
\n\nRelacksachian’s sound is a mirror image of its name. In creating and
combining a relaxing atmosphere with Appalachian-inspired improvisation
al music\, the sextet has managed to generate a sound that consistently
stirs audiences into dancing mashes of country girls\, city boys\, young
folk\, old folk and most of what may be there between.\n\nThe band’s mu
sic resonates among so many listeners because it transforms the traditio
nal to new\, and the new to traditional. Showcasing a fiddle\, a mandoli
 n\, spoons\, a washboard\, an upright bass\, a banjo\, an acoustic guita
r and a drum set\, Relacksachian reinvents traditional fiddle and bluegr
ass tunes and reworks songs from the likes of Bob Dylan and the Grateful
Dead\, all while maintaining an impressive library of original music.\n
\nThe six Virginia natives don’t claim to be the first group of musician
s to whole-heartedly love music and the Blue Ridge Mountains from which
theirs often echoes\, but they do claim to be part of a lucky few that a
re able to share that love on stage. And they are thankful.
