DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Brontë's Victorian romance is no stranger to the s
ilver screen\, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga's affecting and bea
utifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes\, casting can m
ake all the difference. In this case\, Australia's Mia Wasikowska (Alice
in Wonderland) plays the determined Jane Eyre opposite Ireland's Michae
l Fassbender (Fish Tank) as the world-weary Edward Rochester (neither ac
tor betrays their country of origin). Fukunaga begins with Jane's escape
from Rochester's High Gothic Thornfield Hall before flashing back to th
e days when the plainspoken orphan lived with her cruel and resentful au
nt (an unsympathetic Sally Hawkins). The aunt ships her off to a loveles
s charity school\, where she still manages to receive a fine education\,
after which she lands a position as governess for Rochester's ward\, Ad
èle. Though his housekeeper (Dame Judi Dench\, excellent) makes Jane fee
l welcome\, the brooding Rochester attempts to mock and demean her\, but
the quick-witted 19-year-old can hold her own. What might offend a more
superficial man intrigues her employer (played by a gent more handsome
than the author intended). Sparks fly\, but he expresses greater interes
t in a local beauty. Just as Jane finally pierces Rochester's armor\, sh
e discovers his terrible secret\, and hits the road. She meets a kindly
missionary (Jamie Bell) and his sweet sisters\, who offer her the family
she never had\, before a sequence of well-plotted developments allow Ja
ne to forge her own future. For once\, no one can stop her\, making for
 a swoon-worthy\, if bittersweet conclusion.

DESCRIPTION:The sheriff's deputy at the front door brings hard news to R
ee Dolly. Her father has skipped bail on charges that he ran a crystal m
eth lab\, and the Dollys will lose their house if he doesn't show up for
his next court date. Ree's father has disappeared before. The Dolly cla
n has worked the shadowy side of the law for generations\, and arrests (
and attempts to avoid them) are part of life in Rathlin Valley. With two
young brothers depending on her and a mother who's entered a kind of se
cond childhood\, sixteen-year-old Ree knows she has to bring her father
back\, dead or alive. She has grown up in the harsh poverty of the Ozark
s and learns quickly that asking questions of the rough Dolly clan can b
e a fatal mistake. But along the way to a shocking revelation\, Ree disc
overs unforeseen depths in herself and in a family network that protects
its own at any cost. "A piercing\, intense tale told from way inside\,
WINTER'S BONE is stark evidence that Daniel Woodrell is a writer of exce
ptional originality and importance." -Thomas McGuane "In prose both taut
and lyrical\, WINTER'S BONE vividly evokes the spirit of one little wom
an warrior." -Edna O'Brien\n\nThe Bookies meet on the first Wednesday of
every month at 1:30 PM. \nBook selections are made 3-6 months in advanc
 e. Anyone interested in the book discussions are welcome to attend. Each
book discussion group covers a large range of topics and crosses betwee
