The Great River Jazz Preservation Society has re-organized and is presenting their Spring Concerts beginning on March 10th with Cornet Chop Suey from St. Louis, MO. They have perfomed in Europe and named the band after a famous Louis Armstrong Jazz record from 1926.

On May 19th, Gateway City Jazz Band will present a concert. This is a 14 piece Big Band with popular dance arrangements from the Big Band Era.

Both concerts will be held at the Quality Inn Suites in Hannibal, MO from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. The Quality Inn Suites is located on US-36 West near the Veterans Road exit.

There is an ample sized dance floor for both occasions. The selections will include music very suitable for dancing, whatever your style.

When World War I hero Alvin York agreed to sell the movie rights to his life story to Warner Bros., it was on three conditions: (1) That the film contains no phony heroics, (2) that Mrs.York not be played by a Hollywood "glamour girl" and (3) That Gary Cooper portray York on screen. All three conditions were met, and the result is one of the finest and most inspirational biographies ever committed to celluloid.

Other Information:When the audience first meets young farmer Alvin York (Cooper), he's the cussin'est, hell-raisin'est critter in the entire Tennessee Valley. All of this changes when York is struck by lighting during a late-night rainstorm. Chalking up the bolt from the blue as a message from God, York does a complete about-face and finds Religion, much to the delight of local preacher Rosier Pile (Walter Brennan). Despite plenty of provocation, York vows never to get angry at anyone ever again, determining to be a good husband and provider for his sweetheart Gracie Williams (Joan Leslie). When America goes to war in 1917, York elects not to answer the call when drafted, declaring himself a conscientious objector. Forced to go to boot camp, he proves himself a born leader, yet still he balks at the thought of killing anyone. York's understanding commanding officer Major Buxton (Stanley Ridges) slowly convinces the young pacifist that violence is sometimes the only way to defend Democracy. Later on, while serving with the AEF in the Argonne Forest, Sergeant York sees several of his buddies, including his Bronxite best pal Pusher Ross (George Tobias), killed in an enemy ambush. His anger aroused, York personally kills 25 German soldiers, then single-handedly captures 132 prisoners. As a result, York becomes the most decorated hero of WW1, celebrated by no less than General John J. Pershing as "the greatest civilian soldier" of the war. The film won Gary Cooper his first Academy Award, and also picked up an Oscar for Best Film Editing. Not surprisingly, it ended up as the highest-grossing film of 1941.

Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar).

Women also will learn ways to cope with hair loss by using wigs, scarves and other accessories. About 15 cosmetologists, who volunteer their time, are certified for the program by the American Cancer Society.

Foster Care Prayer Vigil

Prayer Vigil for Illinois Children in Foster Care.
May is National Foster Care Month and Christian Adoption Resource and Education (C.A.R.E) will be joining churches across the country in organized prayer vigils for children in foster care. The C.A.R.E foster care prayer vigil will take place on Monday 20th at 7:00 p.m.

Several national organizations including Focus on the Family, Hope for Orphans, a ministry of FamilyLife, and Show Hope (founded by Grammy winning singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth) are encouraging people to gather together to pray for the more than 400,000 children growing up in the foster care system during the month of May.

Several hundred prayer vigils for children and youth in foster care are expected to be held across the country during this national effort. These prayer vigils will provide an opportunity for communities all over America to remember and pray for the children and families as well as the caseworkers and judges working to help them find loving homes.

The Brown County Public Library will be hosting a silent auction fundraiser. The event will have items of several different varieties but many with antique value. Antiques would include but not limited to; books, paintings, prints, record players, and LP records. There are over 21 prints which used to be loaned out by the library at one time in its history. All of the prints have very nice wooden frames and most solid oak. There will be additional miscellaneous items added for the auction as well that were acquired by the library throughout the years. However, the emphasis will be on the prints and antique books which many are in great shape and would make great collector’s items as well as great décor in a home or business. Refreshments will be served during the auction and we hope to see you all here at our Brown County Public Library!

DivorceCare is a non-denominational weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced. It's a place where you can be around people who understand what you are feeling. It's a place where you hear valuable information about ways to heal from the hurt of divorce. Most importantly, you'll learn how to deal with the pain of the past and look forward to rebuilding your life. You can join the group at anytime and repeat the 13 week session as you continue to need help, support, and encouragement. DivorceCare is open to all members of our community.

Bookies Book Discussion -- The School of Essential Ingredients

The “Pillars of Islam,” or the ‘ibâdât, or “acts of worship” are the five basic acts of devotion to God. Physical and spiritual purification is important for performing these acts of devotion. Join Dr. Penny Gold as she describes for us the framework of the Muslim life: faith, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able.

Other Information:Penny Gold is Professor of History at Knox College in Galesburg, with research fields in medieval history and modern Jewish history. She has for many years taught an introductory comparative course on "Judaism, Christianity, and Islam."

Wii Wednesdays for Teens

Get your Wii on at the Quincy Public Library as the library launches its new gaming program for teens called Wii Wednesdays. Teens are invited to come and duke it out for the title of Wii bowler, tennis pro, dance queen and other Wii accolades. Every Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. the Wii cart will be set up in the large meeting room at the back of the building by the movie area. After a hectic day at school, teens can take some time out to relax, gather with friends, share a snack and beat their BFF at Super Mario 2 or Just Dance 2. Games provided include Super Mario 2, Wii Sports, FlingSmash and Just Dance 2. So tap into your inner star and grab your controllers as you get down to the new renovated library for some gaming fun!
