Resident Canada Goose Population Stabilization Training

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the RI State Conservation Committee and RI Conservation Districts is offering four workshops and/or trainings on Resident Canada Goose Population Stabilization and developing Grassroots efforts to control Resident Canada Geese.

Resident Canada Geese populations can inflict significant damage on agricultural land in the form of water quality impairment, crop loss, and subsequent erosion. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, geese also produce heavy concentrations of fecal droppings which can lead to excess nutrient enrichment of ponds and lakes. The additional nutrients then lead to excessive plant growth such as algae and other nuisance plants. Rapid increases in algae can then limit the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water for other aquatic organisms. These large, dense geese populations also pose a risk to other species of birds through transmission of avian diseases.

To mitigate effects on water quality, the RI Conservation Districts are hosting workshops & trainings geared toward the general public (including but not limited to: private landowners, municipalities, non-profits and volunteers) interested in learning about Resident Canada Geese, why they pose an environmental risk and how to develop and implement a Grassroots effort to stabilize local resident geese populations using the GeesePeace Method, recognized as HUMANE by both the US Humane Society and People for the Equal Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The public, especially landowners, municipal leaders, land managers, and anyone interested in learning how to control Resident Canada Goose populations in RI using humane methods are encouraged to attend the workshop to learn about Canada Geese and strategies for coexistence with them. The workshop will discuss the natural history of the Canada Goose; resident versus migrant populations; human/goose conflict; Federal, State and local regulations; and strategies for mitigating goose problems.

What are nitrogen cycling response to climate change and what does that mean for biological communities?

Speaker: Dr. James Prochaska, Director of the Cancer Prevention Center (URI) will discuss efforts of climate change adaptation in implementing actions and behavior changes at both individual and community levels.

Can we protect oysters from disease?
Speaker: Dr. David Rowley (URI Biomedical Sciences) will discuss challenges of bacterial disease outbreaks to aquaculture production and new pathways for combating disease outbreaks in crustaceans and bivalves through the use of probiotics - a method that uses live microorganims to benefit the host organism.

How can sediment cores reconstruct the past?
Speaker: Dr. Warren Prell (Brown University) will discuss he is using sediment cores from Narragansett Bay to reconstruct a historical timeline of biological response over a 500-year time span to recent global warming trends, the urbanization and industrialization of the bay watershed, and the onset of major land-use changes.

Why do people keep bees? It's a good hobby for people who love nature and enjoy watching and learning about bees and the flowers they pollinate and gather nectar from. It insures that you will always have good pollination in your gardens. Some people keep bees because they love honey! Some people even keep bees because they have arthritis and wish to get stung to alleviate arthritic symptoms.

The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association teaches beginner beekeeping classes every year in February and March.

Come celebrate the launch of the Sustainable Communities Initiative (SCI) at Rhode Island College (RIC) on February 16th at Providence Green Drinks!

SCI is a nonprofit initiative hosted by RIC and receiving fiscal agency from the Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) Education Fund. Its mission is to catalyze positive social, environmental, and economic change by further engaging community residents in enrichment learning, participatory research, and informed community activism.

This hosting of Green Drinks will coincide with the opening night of the SCI at RIC Critical Issues in Sustainability speaker series. At 7:00pm all will be invited to attend the inaugural lecture of the series delivered by Julian Agyeman, Professor and Chair of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University, Boston-Medford. His talk is titled, "Just Sustainabilities: Re-imagining (E)quality, Living Within Limits". Admission is free.

Beginning at 5pm, cool drinks will be available at the Fortes Room, Adams Library. Mr. Agyeman's talk will take place a short walk away in Clarke Science 128. For those who would prefer to schmooze over a drink beyond 7:00pm, the Ruff Stone Tavern is just minutes away located at 17 Metcalf Ave.

RI Sierra Club Outing: White Mountains Overnight Excursion

Join the RI Sierra Club on a overnight wintertime outing to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We will be using an Appalachian Trail shelter as our weekend headquarters to explore the trails. Bundle up and see the snowy (we hope) beauty of a New England winter in the mountains.

Meet at the RI Sierra Club office (42 Rice Street, Providence) at 6am on Saturday to caravan. Travel time to the White Mountains is approximately 4-5 hours. Attendees will have the option of staying one or two nights, and will arrive back in RI late on the evening of the day they choose to head home. We will be staying in the Zealand Falls Hut, a hike in/hike out, heated Appalachian Trail shelter. Hut reservations are required in advance, so please contact Ben Jones (outings@risierraclub.org) if you are interested in attending. Accomidations will cost $44/night/person.

IMPORTANT NOTE: this outing will be more strenuous then a typical RI Sierra Club outing and is not suitable for children.

Prudence Island Tour and Seal Watch

Come and explore Prudence Island with a chance to see seals at one of the best haul-out spots in Narragansett Bay. You will also learn about ecological research happening in and around the Bay through the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve. Set out for the south end of the island and a popular seal haul-out at low tide. View the seals using spotting scopes and enjoy a brief presentation about the seals' life cycle and migration to Narragansett Bay. After viewing seals and having lunch at the Center, we will tour in our van with stops to visit the island's one-room schoolhouse, cultural and historic sites, salt marshes and beaches.

The day begins at 9:45am with a half-hour ferry ride leaving Bristol at 10:00am to Prudence Island. You will be greeted at the ferry landing by an educator from the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve based on Prudence Island. A short van ride will bring us to the Research Reserve's 'Lab' Learning Center where we can store lunches in our fridge, use the facilities. At the end of the day you will return to the Prudence Island ferry landing to catch the 4:00pm ferry back to Bristol and arriving there by 4:30pm.

What to Bring: Roughly $7.00 for the round-trip ferry ticket (cash or check only), binoculars, camera, a packed lunch, water bottle, insect and tick repellent, comfortable footwear and warm, waterproof clothes in case of inclement weather.

February 21: Snow Tracking: Bundle up and head out with an Audubon educator to look for signs of animals in the winter. You never know what we will find!

February 22: Owl Detectives: What do owls eat, where do they live, what makes them special? Be an owl detective and find out! This program will include an owl pellet dissection. *There will be a $3.00 per owl pellet fee to help cover costs.

February 23: It's cold out there! Join Audubon and conduct some experiments to find out how animals survive in the winter!

February 24: Native Tales and Explorations: Winter is a great time to snuggle up and hear some nature stories. These unique stories will be told (not read) by Audubon educators and will include artifacts to explore.

Resident Canada Goose Abatement & Available NRCS Funding

The Next Round of Free and Informative Workshops on Canada Goose Abatement and available NRCS Funding will be held on: February 20th, 21st and 22nd.

Resident Canada Geese populations can inflict significant damage on agricultural land in the form of water quality impairment, crop loss, and subsequent erosion. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, geese also produce heavy concentrations of fecal droppings which can lead to excess nutrient enrichment of ponds and lakes. The additional nutrients then lead to excessive plant growth such as algae and other nuisance plants. Rapid increases in algae can then limit the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water for other aquatic organisms. These large, dense geese populations also pose a risk to other species of birds through transmission of avian diseases.

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the RI State Conservation Committee and RI Conservation Districts is offering three workshops on Canada Goose abatement for livestock and agricultural producers in Rhode Island. These workshops will assist you in developing a plan for goose management on your property and provide you with information on management activities that may be funded through the NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), which provides technical and financial assistance to address conservation issues.

To mitigate effects on water quality, NRCS is offers programs and practices to help manage resident Canada goose populations. Conservation practices eligible for financial assistance through the EQIP program include Tree and Shrub Establishment, Early Successional Habitat Management, Conservation Cover, Upland Wildlife Management, and Wetland Wildlife Management.

The public, especially Livestock and Agricultural Producers in RI are encouraged to attend the workshop to learn about Canada Geese and strategies for coexistence with them. The workshop will discuss the natural history of the Canada Goose; resident versus migrant populations; human/goose conflict; Federal, State and local regulations; and strategies for mitigating goose problems.

DEM Parks & Recreation staff will lead guided hikes with an opportunity to view the seals that bask on the rocks off Rome Point at the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve in North Kingstown. The 2 ½ mile walk is relatively easy and participants may also catch a glimpse of numerous birds including loons, cormorants, gulls and mergansers. The walks will take place on the hour on Tuesday, February 21, at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. The walks begin at the parking areas on Route 1-A. Hikers are encouraged to dress appropriately as the area can be extremely cold in the winter wind.

As part of ongoing efforts to encourage children, families and individuals to enjoy the recreational resources and outdoor activities our state parks have to offer and engage in more physical activity, the Department of Environmental Management will hold a series of free activities during the upcoming February school vacation week.

“One of Rhode Island’s greatest assets is our unparalleled natural beauty,” Governor Chafee said. “This DEM program will encourage Rhode Islanders – particularly our young people and families – to get outside and enjoy all our state has to offer.”

“Rhode Island State Parks offer some of the best places to play outside in the winter,” says DEM Director Janet L.
