SHAUN GLADWELL: Seven Year Linework

Spacex
45 Preston St
Exeter EX1 1
Until Sat, 28/11/2009, 6pm

Shaun Gladwell critically and poetically links personal experience with contemporary culture and historical references through performance, video, painting, photography and sculpture. His works engage these concerns through forms of urban expression such as skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, BMX bike riding, break-dancing and most recently, extreme sports.

Seven Year Linework presents a selection of projects that are drawn from Gladwell’s ongoing investigations of conceptual drawings rendered in video. Beginning with one of Gladwell’s earliest experiments in video, the exhibition includes a series of recorded performances from different points of view. Gladwell’s use of slow motion has become a trademark of the artist’s aesthetic style, however the video projects in this exhibition regard a sense of slowed motion in real time footage.

The video works are accompanied by an experimental self-portrait – 'Self-Portrait (Linework)' (2005). Lit up like an x-ray, this work draws our attention to the internal, to the artist’s introspection and observations of his own body drawing, and to the video portraits in Seven Year Linework, which also explore the psychological dimensions of performance.

Gladwell has recently presented new work at the 2009 Venice Biennale in the Australian Pavilion. This exhibition is curated by Tania Doropoulos

More info: www.spacex.org.uk

KATY CONNOR

Exeter Phoenix, Bradninch Place, Gandy Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3LS
Until Tue, 21/12/2010, 8pm

Katy Connor’s work demonstrates a fascination with the moving image and its capacity to visualise patterns of thought and physical sensation. Her latest work Pure Flow, commissioned through the Exeter Phoenix Digital Media Bursary, will generate live, moving imagery created from the data flows between a Global Positioning System [GPS] device and the three satellites which triangulate its position at any one time. Connor reveals a new way of visualising ordinarily invisible streams of data and acknowledges the common usage in surveying and navigational tools of sophisticated technologies, initially developed for military purposes. The exhibition will also include a further selection of Connor’s screen-based works, sculptures and drawings which also reflect upon the profound and ubiquitous presence of technology in our daily lives.

More info: www.exeterphoenix.org.uk

Phonic FM - Rock Nite benefit gig

Exeter Phoenix, Bradninch Place, Gandy Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3LS
Sat, 21/11/2009, 8:30pm

The Rock Show, one of our strongest shows, have put a lot of effort into planning and promoting this event themselves but we ALL need to get behind it, even if we're not particularly into rock. Having said that, most people like some rock and the line-up has been put together for a broad-appeal, good-time, cheap night out: 4 live bands, deejays from three of the station's most popular shows and the great company of the Phonic Massive - all for a fiver…

ACDC tribute by Angusband
- classic singalong rock from this highly entertaining tribute band, including a superb Angus Young lookalike

Drivechain
- hard rock with a strong sense of harmony and melody

Red Mist
- metal mayhem delivered with power and conviction

Veil Cassini
- pedigree indie rock

Plus Rock Show deejays between acts in the auditorium
And Collision, the indie alternative, vs. the mighty Trash City in the bar

Auditorium action will run until midnight and we'll party until later in the bar, so this will be a great Phonic FM social event too!

So, please do all you can to support this important event to raise money which our station desperately needs…

More info: www.phonic.fm
