5 South West contemporary craft makers took part in a scheme to work with totally new ideas and methods. Re-Route presents their experience and sometimes radical discovery of a new creative direction – whether research conducted in remote locations, a study of unfamiliar media, or experimental collaborative projects, the work produced presents the development of the maker alongside documentation, film, diaries, images and personal statements. Featuring achitectural glass, ceramic sculpture, digital media and jewellery. Free.

KATY CONNOR

Katy Connor’s work demonstrates a fascination with the moving image and its capacity to visualise patterns of thought and physical sensation. Her latest work Pure Flow, commissioned through the Exeter Phoenix Digital Media Bursary, will generate live, moving imagery created from the data flows between a Global Positioning System [GPS] device and the three satellites which triangulate its position at any one time. Connor reveals a new way of visualising ordinarily invisible streams of data and acknowledges the common usage in surveying and navigational tools of sophisticated technologies, initially developed for military purposes. The exhibition will also include a further selection of Connor’s screen-based works, sculptures and drawings which also reflect upon the profound and ubiquitous presence of technology in our daily lives.

Emily Wardill

This winter Spacex will present a solo exhibition by London based British filmmaker Emily Wardill, one of the UK’s most exciting young artists, described by the Guardian as unafraid to ‘put her viewers between a rock and a hard place’.

With her new work, Game Keepers Without Game, Wardill presents a powerful and contemporary feature length movie that tackles difficult social issues without compromise.

The formal structure of the film is based on Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s Life is a Dream (La Vida es Suena) that was written in the 17th Century. The script for Wardill’s new work translates the story into contemporary London; depicting a child banished from the family home at an early age.

The work, which is set to a complex drumming sound track, comprises of still shots of objects that become characters; and a mixture of acted scenes where nothing and nobody touches.

Following its premiere at Spacex this new work will be screened at The Showroom, London. It will also be included in a major solo show at de appel, Amsterdam and at MOCA in Miami in December 2009.

London based artist Emily Wardill will be coming to Spacex on Saturday 30 January at 2.30pm, to speak about Game Keepers Without Game. Admission is free but booking is essential, as this is a very popular event.

This exhibition brings together the work of four artists who, through a variety of mechanical means, transform inanimate materials into artworks that have a life of their own. By bringing the ‘spark of life’ to their work in an apparent process of transformative alchemy, each could be seen to employ the magician’s or ‘thaumaturgist’s’ – tools of spectacle, illusion and the power of wonder.
Through a potent and creative mix of motion, engineering, technology & mathematics these artists explore relationships between art & science, man & machine, chaos & order.
Ivan Black uses repetition of form to create mathematical and geometric sculptures which use movement to explore his fascination with fluid geometry.
Bálint Bolygó creates mechanisms animated by natural universal forces and the unpredictability of the human touch, resulting in an independent act of creation.
Tim Lewis’ automated sculptures react to people and the environment, exploring and questioning perceptions of the world around us.
Nik Ramage’s absurd, paradoxical and at times completely comical work foregoes utilitarian functionality in favour of futility, uncertainty and fragility.
