SHAUN GLADWELL: Seven Year Linework

Shaun Gladwell critically and poetically links personal experience with contemporary culture and historical references through performance, video, painting, photography and sculpture. His works engage these concerns through forms of urban expression such as skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, BMX bike riding, break-dancing and most recently, extreme sports.

Seven Year Linework presents a selection of projects that are drawn from Gladwell’s ongoing investigations of conceptual drawings rendered in video. Beginning with one of Gladwell’s earliest experiments in video, the exhibition includes a series of recorded performances from different points of view. Gladwell’s use of slow motion has become a trademark of the artist’s aesthetic style, however the video projects in this exhibition regard a sense of slowed motion in real time footage.

The video works are accompanied by an experimental self-portrait – 'Self-Portrait (Linework)' (2005). Lit up like an x-ray, this work draws our attention to the internal, to the artist’s introspection and observations of his own body drawing, and to the video portraits in Seven Year Linework, which also explore the psychological dimensions of performance.

Gladwell has recently presented new work at the 2009 Venice Biennale in the Australian Pavilion. This exhibition is curated by Tania Doropoulos

I’m going over in a barrel. I’m leaving the cannon, hitting the ramp at 90mph and clearing ten double-decker buses. I might fall. I might break my body into several pieces, but then I’ll pick myself up, dust myself off and do it all over again. This time, I’m going higher, further and faster. Tonight, I will attempt the impossible. Action Hero have measured it out, done a few calculations and are confident that it could go either way. Watch Me Fall explores daredevils, our obsession with those who attempt the impossible, the futility of their attempts and their inevitable fall from grace.
An Arnolfini We Live Here commission.
SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK (15)

USA / 2008 / 124 mins.
Dir: Charlie Kaufman. With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michele Williams and Catherine Keener.
Caden Cotard is a New York Theatre director who yearns to create a work of profound significance. He is plagued by paranoia and prone to intense self analysis, and his artist wife Adele’s lack of interest in his problems drives him closer to his leading lady Claire and devoted box office assistant Hazel. Synecdoche is Kaufman’s most ambitious, unconventional and in many ways unfathomable story yet, but it is hugely enjoyable, ranging from funny to sad, but mostly insightful.

SPECIAL MEAL OFFER!
Buy a combined meal and film ticket for only £10 (£9) and enjoy a specially prepared American/New York style meal (served from 6.30 to 8.30pm).
Advance bookings by 16 November.

KATY CONNOR

Katy Connor’s work demonstrates a fascination with the moving image and its capacity to visualise patterns of thought and physical sensation. Her latest work Pure Flow, commissioned through the Exeter Phoenix Digital Media Bursary, will generate live, moving imagery created from the data flows between a Global Positioning System [GPS] device and the three satellites which triangulate its position at any one time. Connor reveals a new way of visualising ordinarily invisible streams of data and acknowledges the common usage in surveying and navigational tools of sophisticated technologies, initially developed for military purposes. The exhibition will also include a further selection of Connor’s screen-based works, sculptures and drawings which also reflect upon the profound and ubiquitous presence of technology in our daily lives.

Phonic FM - Rock Nite benefit gig

The Rock Show, one of our strongest shows, have put a lot of effort into planning and promoting this event themselves but we ALL need to get behind it, even if we're not particularly into rock. Having said that, most people like some rock and the line-up has been put together for a broad-appeal, good-time, cheap night out: 4 live bands, deejays from three of the station's most popular shows and the great company of the Phonic Massive - all for a fiver…

ACDC tribute by Angusband
- classic singalong rock from this highly entertaining tribute band, including a superb Angus Young lookalike

Drivechain
- hard rock with a strong sense of harmony and melody

Red Mist
- metal mayhem delivered with power and conviction

Veil Cassini
- pedigree indie rock

Plus Rock Show deejays between acts in the auditorium
And Collision, the indie alternative, vs. the mighty Trash City in the bar

Auditorium action will run until midnight and we'll party until later in the bar, so this will be a great Phonic FM social event too!

So, please do all you can to support this important event to raise money which our station desperately needs…

With Jeff Rutagengwa, Eric Ndorunkundiye
An ethnographic, artistic and probing debut feature set in Rwanda, Munyurangabo is the first film to be made in the Kinyarwanda language. Shot entirely with unprofessional actors, the film is raw and rough around the edges and tells the story of an unlikely friendship between 2 young men from traditionally rival tribes, the Hutus and Tutsis. Their journey takes them across the deep, dark reds and lush greens of the Rwandan landscape but their motives remain separate; one after revenge for his father’s death, the other, home.

Plymouth Farmers' Market

With around 25 stalls setting up every month selling a wide variety of local produce, the city centre farmers’ market is a lively and bustling market to visit. Situated by the sundial in the heart of the city centre shoppers can source produce, which has been reared, grown or made by local farmers.

Visitors to the market can expect to find locally reared ostrich meat, pork, beef, lamb; locally grown strawberries and vegetables, plus locally produced cheeses, chutney, pies and pasties.

Due to the success and popular demand by both food producers and the public, the farmers’ market is in town twice a month on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at the Piazza, by the sundial, 9am to 4.30pm. Please use the 'Farmers market calendar' link on the left for up to date forthcoming farmers market dates.

The 'Producers' link on the left will also give you a list of the stalls that you can expect to find at the farmers market, this is currently being updated to reflect the 2008 season.

On the brink of being reduced to shovelling wolf dung, Mr Mac gets himself a brand new puppet that changes his luck. He calls her Georgette and she takes the crowd by storm. But success swells Georgette’s already swollen head and she rides off into the sunset on the hunt for real adventures. When she teams up with a young boy who’s a wizard with horses she ends up getting a great deal more than she bargained for!

MAKE-BELIEVE

What do you believe in? As ever in Quarantine’s work, Make-believe explores big ideas through personal histories. Performed by an extraordinary cast including a 2 year-old boy, it asks those tricky questions that life throws at us. How do we manage to live together when we disagree so wildly with each other? How do you separate the real from the made-up in a piece of theatre? Make-believe is a dark and joyous piece of theatre. Like all of Quarantine’s work, this is not a show in black and white.
