Scientific Literature Discovery: Mastering PubMed

Topics covered: Successful search strategies, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), PubMed advanced search features, common PubMed filters, and finding the full text article.
Target audience: Students and Researchers. Particular those beginning a literature review to accompany a research project, thesis, or manuscript publication.

Objectives: Use MeSH terms to expand and narrow a search on a given topic. Implement PubMed filters to apply appropriate publication years, article types, and methodological parameters to a topic. Quickly obtain full text articles and save search results for future review.

PubMed Searching for the Administrative Assistant

After this session, attendees will be able to describe an overview of Medline searching techniques such as basic textword and subject searching, combining concepts, focusing or limiting results, viewing and saving results. Attendees will also be able to translate a clinical research question into a search strategy.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own search topic to class for a hands-on experience. Includes a brief discussion of finding full-text articles online.

Searching the Literature: Beyond PubMed

Objectives: Identify when to use EMBASE , Web of Science, or the Google Scholar search engine to complement an initial PubMed literature search. Familiarize users with specialized search tools to identify conceptual relationships, correlated topics, and indirect associations within in the published literature.
