OUR SPIRITED ANCESTORS: THE DECORATIVE ART OF DRINK

Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
924 South Main Street , Winston-Salem NC 27101
Sunday, February 5, 2012, 1 – 4:30pm

Early Southerners drank a lot — nearly twenty gallons of alcohol each — every year. They drank when they woke up in the morning, as they ate and worked during the day, and when they socialized at night. But how people drank was as important as what they drank. From imported Madeira sipped at mahogany tables to local whisky out of redware jugs, this exhibit explores the decorative arts that defined the early Southern drinker.

More info: www.mesda.org

SECCA EXHIBITION: OUT OF FASHION

SECCA-Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art
750 Marguerite Drive , Winston-Salem NC 27106
Sunday, February 5, 2012, 1 – 5pm

The eclipse of a once-thriving textile industry in North Carolina speaks to the volatility of market-driven fashion/s. Rather than keeping up with the latest styles (and their continuing demands of consumerism, turnover and excess) there is a movement amongst artists and designers that turns instead to refuge, time and duration. Beyond the runway and haute couture, this exhibition mines the histories of fashion as vessels of time, nature, and memory.

More info: www.secca.org

Our Expanding Oceans Exhibit: The Blending of Art and Science

SciWorks
400 West Hanes Mill Road , Winston-Salem NC 27105
Monday, February 6, 2012, 10am – 4pm

This comprehensive art and education exhibit created by artist Mary Edna Fraser and scientist Dr. Orrin Pilkey, explores the major elements of global climate change and the greenhouse effect with an emphasis on melting ice and rising seas. 60 dyed silk batiks - depicting aerial, satellite, and conceptual perspectives of our environment - are colored by hand using a modern variation of an ancient dyeing technique. The batiks illustrate important effects of global warming, with written interpretation from both Fraser and Pilkey.

More info: www.sciworks.org

Our Expanding Oceans Exhibit: The Blending of Art and Science

SciWorks
400 West Hanes Mill Road , Winston-Salem NC 27105
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 10am – 4pm

This comprehensive art and education exhibit created by artist Mary Edna Fraser and scientist Dr. Orrin Pilkey, explores the major elements of global climate change and the greenhouse effect with an emphasis on melting ice and rising seas. 60 dyed silk batiks - depicting aerial, satellite, and conceptual perspectives of our environment - are colored by hand using a modern variation of an ancient dyeing technique. The batiks illustrate important effects of global warming, with written interpretation from both Fraser and Pilkey.

More info: www.sciworks.org

OUR SPIRITED ANCESTORS: THE DECORATIVE ART OF DRINK

Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
924 South Main Street , Winston-Salem NC 27101
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 10am – 4:30pm

Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 10am – 5pm

Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 10am – 4pm

This comprehensive art and education exhibit created by artist Mary Edna Fraser and scientist Dr. Orrin Pilkey, explores the major elements of global climate change and the greenhouse effect with an emphasis on melting ice and rising seas. 60 dyed silk batiks - depicting aerial, satellite, and conceptual perspectives of our environment - are colored by hand using a modern variation of an ancient dyeing technique.
OUR SPIRITED ANCESTORS: THE DECORATIVE ART OF DRINK

Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
924 South Main Street , Winston-Salem NC 27101
Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 10am – 4:30pm

Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 10am – 5pm

The eclipse of a once-thriving textile industry in North Carolina speaks to the volatility of market-driven fashion/s. Rather than keeping up with the latest styles (and their continuing demands of consumerism, turnover and excess) there is a movement amongst artists and designers that turns instead to refuge, time and duration. Beyond the runway and haute couture, this exhibition mines the histories of fashion as vessels of time, nature, and memory.

More info: www.secca.org

The batiks illustrate important effects of global warming, with written interpretation from both Fraser and Pilkey.

More info: www.sciworks.org

OUR SPIRITED ANCESTORS: THE DECORATIVE ART OF DRINK

Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
924 South Main Street , Winston-Salem NC 27101
Thursday, February 9, 2012, 10am – 4:30pm

Thursday, February 9, 2012, 10am – 8pm

Friday, February 10, 2012, 10am – 4pm

Friday, February 10, 2012, 10am – 4:30pm

Friday, February 10, 2012, 10am – 5pm

The eclipse of a once-thriving textile industry in North Carolina speaks to the volatility of market-driven fashion/s. Rather than keeping up with the latest styles (and their continuing demands of consumerism, turnover and excess) there is a movement amongst artists and designers that turns instead to refuge, time and duration. Beyond the runway and haute couture, this exhibition mines the histories of fashion as vessels of time, nature, and memory.

More info: www.secca.org

OUR SPIRITED ANCESTORS: THE DECORATIVE ART OF DRINK

Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
924 South Main Street , Winston-Salem NC 27101
Saturday, February 11, 2012, 10am – 4:30pm

Saturday, February 11, 2012, 10am – 5pm

The eclipse of a once-thriving textile industry in North Carolina speaks to the volatility of market-driven fashion/s. Rather than keeping up with the latest styles (and their continuing demands of consumerism, turnover and excess) there is a movement amongst artists and designers that turns instead to refuge, time and duration. Beyond the runway and haute couture, this exhibition mines the histories of fashion as vessels of time, nature, and memory.

More info: www.secca.org
