DESCRIPTION:FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MICHIGAN!\n \n SESAME STREET PRESENTS:
THE BODY\n AT SLOAN MUSEUM BEGINNING FEBRUARY 16\, 2013\n \n Can you te
ll me how to get to Sesame Street? It’s easy! Simply visit Sesame Street
Presents: The Body ‐ at Sloan Museum between February 16 and May 26\, 2
013.\n \n Sesame Street Presents: The Body is an interactive exhibition
all about you! The concept is a result of Sesame Workshop’s initiative\,
Healthy Habits for Life\, created in response to the current childhood
obesity crisis in the United States. Sesame Workshop\, the nonprofit edu
 cational organization behind Sesame Street\, and Thinkwell Design &amp\;
Production of Burbank\, CA created this interactive experience. Sesame
Street Presents: The Body teaches families about how to maintain a healt
hy lifestyle\, especially at an early age.\n \n Sesame Workshop launched
the Healthy Habits for Life initiative in May 2004\, on Capitol Hill\,
to harness the power of Sesame Street to guide children and their caregi
vers through lessons related to healthy eating\, the importance of physi
cal activity\, and other healthy habits such as hygiene and rest. Featur
ing a coalition of partners and an advisory board of health\, nutrition
\, fitness and education experts\, the program was created to develop and
  distribute multiplemedia\, age‐appropriate content.\n \n Sesame Street
Presents: The Body offers an engaging\, free‐flowing learning experience
set in the fun\, familiar and reassuring world of Sesame Street. The lo
veable Sesame Street Muppets anchor an exciting collection of hands‐on\,
interactive multimedia experiences that allow children to explore the h
uman body and how to keep it healthy. Each exhibit area has multiple act
ivities to provide age‐appropriate and exciting learning opportunities f
or children at a variety of developmental levels. The exhibition emphasi
zes scientific investigation and developmental and curriculum‐based lear
ning goals for children ranging from two to eight years old. These learn
ing goals tie into the National Science Education Standards\, the Benchm
arks for Science Literacy and the Sesame Street Healthy Habits for Life
Curriculum.\n \n “Each component of Sesame Street Presents: The Body is
geared toward children’s natural excitement about learning\,” added Dr.
Rosemarie Truglio\, Vice President\, Education and Research\, Sesame Wor
kshop. “We believe that children learn best through active participation
and self‐discovery. The interactive exhibit features a wide range of op
portunities for children to observe\, investigate\, experiment and talk
about what they are learning with their parent or caregiver. Thinkwell h
as done a superb job of incorporating our content and characters with th
eir design.”\n \n “Sesame Street Presents: The Body is an amazing educat
ional attraction\,” says Joe Z enas\, Principal of Thinkwell Design and
Production. “It is a hands‐on\, interactive learning experience that use
s Sesame Street and its incredible cast of characters to deliver real sc
ience and education in wildly kinetic\, imaginative and unforgettable wa
ys."\n \n Sesame Street Presents: The Body features four different educa
tion zones related to the human body:\n \n &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; How You
Work – Whether you are exercising\, playing\, dancing or even sleeping
\, your body is always hard at work. In “How You Work\,” kids can put the
ir bodies to the test in “Super Grover’s Obstacle Course\,” a physical m
ovement station that encourages kids to crawl\, jump\, balance and climb
\; “Rosita’s Locomotion\,” where kids learn how the heart and different
muscles work while pumping\, rowing or running\; and “Grover’s Dance Par
ty\,” a groovy disco where kids can dance and boogie along with Grover.
\n &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Your Insides – “Your Insides” is an exploration
of what goes on inside the body. Activities include the “Count’s Organ O
rgan\,” which musically teaches kids about their internal organs’ locati
ons and functions\; “Digestion with Oscar\,” a display that shows kids w
hat happens to food when they eat it\; and ”Oscar’s Sneeze Machine\,” wh
ere children pull a lever to irritate a big nose that actually sneezes o
n them!\n &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Your Outsides – Children learn to identi
fy different body parts\, learn what they do\, and explore the many ways
they can put them to use. Exhibits include “Your Wonderful Hands\,” fea
turing puzzles\, sign language games\, shadow puppets and more\; “Your L
egs and Feet\,” an interactive exhibit that shows what happens when you
put your legs in motion\, and “Use Your Head\,” a play‐along question an
 d answer game show about the parts of the head.\n &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
Staying Healthy – Learn how staying clean\, eating healthy foods\, and g
etting plenty of physical activity as well as sleep can help the body st
ay healthy. Ernie and Rubber Ducky get kids started in “Rub‐A‐Dub Tub\,”
a silly game that shows them just how much fun staying clean can be. Th
en it’s on to “Mr. Hooper’s Store\,” where children scan groceries and l
earn specific messages about how different healthy meals are good for th
 eir bodies and “Baby Bear’s Mini Mart\,” a toddler‐sized activity area w
here children can stock up on a variety of colorful\, healthy foods.\n
\n There is an online component that allows children and their adult care
givers to further explore and learn about the subject at hand. The web s
ite\,&nbsp\; www.sesamestreetpresents.org\, is designed so that children
and adult caregivers can explore the exhibit prior to their visit and c
aregivers can download guides and educational material.\n \n \n Sesame S
treet Presents: The Body will be at Sloan Museum in Flint for a limited
 time\, February 16th through May 26th\, 2013. Tickets are $9 Adults\, $8
Seniors\, $6 for Youth ages 3-11\, Free for ages 2 and under.&nbsp\; Fo

DESCRIPTION:You can celebrate the birth of a movement and help others in
need by coming to donate blood in early May.\n \n May 8 marks World Red
Cross Day\, as well as the birthday of Henry Dunant\, the founder of wh
at is known today as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Moveme
nt. Dunant was a young Swiss businessman who advocated for the humane tr
eatment of wartime sick and wounded. Dunant witnessed atrocities in 1859
during a bloody battle in Solferino\, Italy\, and organized local peopl
e to come to the aid of injured soldiers. Upon his return to Geneva\, Du
nant called for the creation of national volunteer relief societies to a
ssist during wartime. His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conv
entions\, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide\, including
the American Red Cross.\n \n “We encourage everyone to help continue hi
s legacy and help people in need\, wherever they are\,” said Todd Kulman
\, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Region of the Amer
ican Red Cross.&nbsp\; “Coming to donate blood to help hospital patients
who need it for surgeries\, cancer care\, or to treat life-threatening
accidents is one way you can help.”\n \n The American Red Cross is among
more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world dev
oted to alleviating human suffering wherever it is found.\n \n “Dunant s
howed us that even when world events seem overwhelming\, you can make a
difference\, simply by giving blood\, volunteering or making a contribut
ion through your American Red Cross\,” said Kulman.\n \n There are many
ways to become involved with the mission of the American Red Cross.&nbsp

\n About the American Red Cross\n \n The Great Lakes Blood Services Regi
on serves 65 counties\, and needs to collect about 650 units of blood a
day to meet patient need in hospitals. In addition to supplying about 40
percent of the nation’s blood\, the American Red Cross teaches lifesavi
ng skills\, provides international humanitarian aid\; and supports milit
ary members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organizati
on—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity
of the American public to perform its mission.

DESCRIPTION:Three area musicians\, including American Idol semifinalist
Shubha Vedula\, will come together for a night of acoustic music in thre

The Benefit Gala for Starry Night and Max’s Place for Autism will begin
at 6 p.m. Sunday\, May 19\, in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium on th
e campus of Central Michigan University.\n \n Performers will include Je
ssica Holly Roth with Steve Roth\; Traci Nelson with special guests\; an
d Shubha Vedula with accompanist Andrew Hutchinson.\n \n Presented by CM
U’s Master of Arts in Humanities Program\, admission to the gala is free
but donations will be graciously accepted to benefit Starry Night and M
ax’s Place programs and facilities.\n \n “What Shubha is doing with her
talent and her art form of music is everything that I was thinking when
I founded the Starry Night Art and Nature Conservatory in 1998\,” says M
arie Lannen\, M.A.\, founder of Starry Night and Max’s Place. “Art in it
s most curative form is transformative and powerfully healing. With our
Max’s Place Program we serve youth with autism\, and we touch their hear
ts through music and the arts.”\n \n Autism is a developmental disorder
that appears in the first three years of life and affects the brain’s no
rmal development of social and communication skills. One in every 50 chi
ldren nationwide has autism\, and Michigan has the fourth highest popula
tion of autistic children in the country\, with more than 15\,000 throug
hout the state.\n \n Lannen had launched Max’s Place as a pilot program
at CMU in 2007. The weekday summer camp engaged children ages 7 through
17 in hands-on activities in visual arts\, creative writing and music.\n
\n Prior to that in 1998 she had established the Starry Night non-profi
 t corporation\, independently manages Max’s Place\, which is named for M
ax Paladino\, the childhood friend of Lannen’s son Peter. Paladino\, who
had neuro-devlopmental delays compatible with Asperger Syndrome – a mil
d form of autism that often goes undiagnosed\, died in an accident in 20
06.\n \n “I thought we need to memorialize this little boy\,” Lannen sai
 d. “Max was an amazing friend to Peter and that friendship needed to be
remembered. You don’t get many friendships like that in a lifetime.”\n
\n Preliminary sponsors of the Starry Night and Max’s Place for Autism ga
la event include Violets are Blue Photography\, Mountain Town Rehab\, Ga
 il Allen Lanphear\, Laurie Bouwman\, L-1 Bar &amp\; Grille\, The Brass C

His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conv
entions\, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide\, including
the American Red Cross.\n \n “We encourage everyone to help continue hi
s legacy and help people in need\, wherever they are\,” said Todd Kulman

more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world dev

\n About the American Red Cross\n \n The Great Lakes Blood Services Regi

ary members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organizati
on—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity
of the American public to perform its mission.

His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conv
entions\, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide\, including
the American Red Cross.\n \n “We encourage everyone to help continue hi
s legacy and help people in need\, wherever they are\,” said Todd Kulman

accidents is one way you can help.”\n \n The American Red Cross is among
more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world dev

\n About the American Red Cross\n \n The Great Lakes Blood Services Regi

percent of the nation’s blood\, the American Red Cross teaches lifesavi
ng skills\, provides international humanitarian aid\; and supports milit
ary members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organizati
on—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity
of the American public to perform its mission.
