AT SLOAN MUSEUM BEGINNING FEBRUARY 16, 2013

Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street? It’s easy! Simply visit Sesame Street Presents: The Body ‐ at Sloan Museum between February 16 and May 26, 2013.

Sesame Street Presents: The Body is an interactive exhibition all about you! The concept is a result of Sesame Workshop’s initiative, Healthy Habits for Life, created in response to the current childhood obesity crisis in the United States. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, and Thinkwell Design & Production of Burbank, CA created this interactive experience. Sesame Street Presents: The Body teaches families about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially at an early age.

Sesame Workshop launched the Healthy Habits for Life initiative in May 2004, on Capitol Hill, to harness the power of Sesame Street to guide children and their caregivers through lessons related to healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, and other healthy habits such as hygiene and rest. Featuring a coalition of partners and an advisory board of health, nutrition, fitness and education experts, the program was created to develop and distribute multiplemedia, age‐appropriate content.

Sesame Street Presents: The Body offers an engaging, free‐flowing learning experience set in the fun, familiar and reassuring world of Sesame Street. The loveable Sesame Street Muppets anchor an exciting collection of hands‐on, interactive multimedia experiences that allow children to explore the human body and how to keep it healthy. Each exhibit area has multiple activities to provide age‐appropriate and exciting learning opportunities for children at a variety of developmental levels. The exhibition emphasizes scientific investigation and developmental and curriculum‐based learning goals for children ranging from two to eight years old. These learning goals tie into the National Science Education Standards, the Benchmarks for Science Literacy and the Sesame Street Healthy Habits for Life Curriculum.

“Each component of Sesame Street Presents: The Body is geared toward children’s natural excitement about learning,” added Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Vice President, Education and Research, Sesame Workshop. “We believe that children learn best through active participation and self‐discovery. The interactive exhibit features a wide range of opportunities for children to observe, investigate, experiment and talk about what they are learning with their parent or caregiver. Thinkwell has done a superb job of incorporating our content and characters with their design.”

“Sesame Street Presents: The Body is an amazing educational attraction,” says Joe Z enas, Principal of Thinkwell Design and Production. “It is a hands‐on, interactive learning experience that uses Sesame Street and its incredible cast of characters to deliver real science and education in wildly kinetic, imaginative and unforgettable ways."

Sesame Street Presents: The Body features four different education zones related to the human body:

    How You Work – Whether you are exercising, playing, dancing or even sleeping, your body is always hard at work. In “How You Work,” kids can put their bodies to the test in “Super Grover’s Obstacle Course,” a physical movement station that encourages kids to crawl, jump, balance and climb; “Rosita’s Locomotion,” where kids learn how the heart and different muscles work while pumping, rowing or running; and “Grover’s Dance Party,” a groovy disco where kids can dance and boogie along with Grover.
    Your Insides – “Your Insides” is an exploration of what goes on inside the body. Activities include the “Count’s Organ Organ,” which musically teaches kids about their internal organs’ locations and functions; “Digestion with Oscar,” a display that shows kids what happens to food when they eat it; and ”Oscar’s Sneeze Machine,” where children pull a lever to irritate a big nose that actually sneezes on them!
    Your Outsides – Children learn to identify different body parts, learn what they do, and explore the many ways they can put them to use. Exhibits include “Your Wonderful Hands,” featuring puzzles, sign language games, shadow puppets and more; “Your Legs and Feet,” an interactive exhibit that shows what happens when you put your legs in motion, and “Use Your Head,” a play‐along question and answer game show about the parts of the head.
    Staying Healthy – Learn how staying clean, eating healthy foods, and getting plenty of physical activity as well as sleep can help the body stay healthy. Ernie and Rubber Ducky get kids started in “Rub‐A‐Dub Tub,” a silly game that shows them just how much fun staying clean can be. Then it’s on to “Mr. Hooper’s Store,” where children scan groceries and learn specific messages about how different healthy meals are good for their bodies and “Baby Bear’s Mini Mart,” a toddler‐sized activity area where children can stock up on a variety of colorful, healthy foods.

There is an online component that allows children and their adult caregivers to further explore and learn about the subject at hand. The web site, www.sesamestreetpresents.org, is designed so that children and adult caregivers can explore the exhibit prior to their visit and caregivers can download guides and educational material.

Sesame Street Presents: The Body will be at Sloan Museum in Flint for a limited time, February 16th through May 26th, 2013. Dow Memorial Library at 1710 W St Andrews in Midland on Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 4, May 2, June 6, July 11, September 5, October 3, and November 14, 2013.

This seminar, formerly titled Fundamentals of Starting a Business, is designed for individuals who are considering self-employment and those who may be at the beginning stages of starting a business. Delivered in a workshop format, this introductory session helps aspiring entrepreneurs assess their abilities to lead and manage a company, as well as evaluate market and sales potential for their products/services. Start-up costs, financing options, and business planning are introduced, along with other necessary steps to getting started.

Kearsley Community Schools is accepting applications for enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year for students who do not reside within the district's boundaries.

Unlimited openings in all grades.

Students are not charged tuition and a release is not needed if accepted for enrollment. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parent of guardian. Applications may be obtained at Kearsley Community Schools Administration Building, 4396 Underhill Dr., Flint, 48506 or online at kearsleyschools.org.

Applications will be accepted May 6-Aug. 15. Students who apply by June 13 will be notified of acceptance by June 28. Applications received after June 13 will receive notification of acceptance by Aug. 30.

DUPLO AND LEGO CLUBS AT THE LIBRARY

Butman-Fish Library, 1716 Hancock will have its LEGO Club on Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. Children must be 7-12 to register and adult participation is encouraged. Call 799-9160 to register.

COMMUNITY RESOURCE SERIES: ASK-A-LAWYER-EXPUNGEMENT

On Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at Butman-Fish Library, 1716 Hancock, the Saginaw County Bar Association (SCBA) and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan partnering with the Public Libraries of Saginaw will feature another Ask-A-Lawyer Night featuring local attorneys who will provide community legal education at no charge.

MICHIGAN HISTORY WEEK CELEBRATION

For “Michigan History Week” Claytor Library will be celebrating our wonderful “Great Lakes State” on Tuesday, May 14 at 4:30 p.m. at Claytor Library, 1410 N. 12th. Dr. David Wallace, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, a Saginaw native and a graduate of Arthur Hill High School, will be on hand to answer your pet curiosities and concerns that will help your family make an informed decision about pet ownership and responsibilities. Dr. Wallace started the Mid-Michigan Veterinary Hospital in 1985 and is skilled in all aspects of pet care…from general checkups to delicate surgery.

We will be working on producing a benefit art book for the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. if you would like to be involved in the book please make sure all of your images are about 300 dpi and proportionate to 11"x17" pages. (due to limitations some images may not be used) We are looking for uplifting pictures and powerful imagery featuring fire fighters, EMT's, Police, memorial pages, marathon runners, and any types of first responders doing what they do best. World Red Cross Day

You can celebrate the birth of a movement and help others in need by coming to donate blood in early May.

May 8 marks World Red Cross Day, as well as the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of what is known today as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Dunant was a young Swiss businessman who advocated for the humane treatment of wartime sick and wounded. Dunant witnessed atrocities in 1859 during a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, and organized local people to come to the aid of injured soldiers. Upon his return to Geneva, Dunant called for the creation of national volunteer relief societies to assist during wartime. His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conventions, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide, including the American Red Cross.

“We encourage everyone to help continue his legacy and help people in need, wherever they are,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “Coming to donate blood to help hospital patients who need it for surgeries, cancer care, or to treat life-threatening accidents is one way you can help.”

The American Red Cross is among more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world devoted to alleviating human suffering wherever it is found.

“Dunant showed us that even when world events seem overwhelming, you can make a difference, simply by giving blood, volunteering or making a contribution through your American Red Cross,” said Kulman.

All car and motorcycle entries will be accepted 9 a.m. - noon on May 19. There is no registration fee. The first 100 entrants will receive free lunch, dash plaques, and goodie bags. All entrants will be eligible for prizes throughout the show.

Previous year’s entrants have included a 1940 Ford coupe, a 1911 Whiting, an assembled open roadster, a 2011 Golgotha Sanctified motorcycle, a 1942 Harley Davidson, a 1923 T Bucket, and a variety of classics, modified models, rat rods, tuners, and low riders.

The day’s events include:

The City of Grand Blanc announces the return of its Farmers Market for its eighth season in downtown Grand Blanc on May 12th.

The market will run 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each Sunday, with the season beginning May 12th and lasting until October 27th. The market will have the capability to accept Electronic Bank Transaction (EBT) for Bridge Card holders. The market also will include crafters/artisans at each market day.

With different themes each week, the season of the City of Grand Blanc Farmers Market truly has something for everybody. Each week, Hot Dogs on the Run will have food available for purchase, and MSU Master Gardeners will have a resource table with information available for the public along with Funtastic Inflatable’s bounce house.

On May 12th, the market kicks off its season with Charlene Berry, a Dulcimer player from Plymouth, and MSU demonstrations throughout the market upon request. Other activities for the first season day include a Mother’s Day giveaway and lots of hanging baskets available.

May activities include Flowers, Flowers, and Flowers in the Downtown on May 19th and Plant Your Day Away on May 26th with variety music by Michael Potbury. Calling all kids! June 2nd is the Kids Corner Kickoff.

Activities for the day include the El Said Lady Shriners Clowns. Zumba for the Viaduct days and the Berry Blitz will return, as well.

In addition to EBT, the City of Grand Blanc Farmers Market will again accept Project FRESH coupons for the market season. The Flint Banjo Club will also be back on June 30th from noon to two and is sponsored by the Grand Blanc Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Double Up Food Bucks will begin on July 7th. The July 7th Kids Corner Day will be sponsored by Dort Federal Credit Union. Funtastic Inflatables will also be at each market day for the kids to enjoy!

Three area musicians, including American Idol semifinalist Shubha Vedula, will come together for a night of acoustic music in three acts to benefit a local resource for families affected by autism.

The Benefit Gala for Starry Night and Max’s Place for Autism will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium on the campus of Central Michigan University.

Performers will include Jessica Holly Roth with Steve Roth; Traci Nelson with special guests; and Shubha Vedula with accompanist Andrew Hutchinson.

Presented by CMU’s Master of Arts in Humanities Program, admission to the gala is free but donations will be graciously accepted to benefit Starry Night and Max’s Place programs and facilities.

“What Shubha is doing with her talent and her art form of music is everything that I was thinking when I founded the Starry Night Art and Nature Conservatory in 1998,” says Marie Lannen, M.A., founder of Starry Night and Max’s Place. “Art in its most curative form is transformative and powerfully healing. With our Max’s Place Program we serve youth with autism, and we touch their hearts through music and the arts.”

Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life and affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. One in every 50 children nationwide has autism, and Michigan has the fourth highest population of autistic children in the country, with more than 15,000 throughout the state.

Lannen had launched Max’s Place as a pilot program at CMU in 2007. The weekday summer camp engaged children ages 7 through 17 in hands-on activities in visual arts, creative writing and music.

Prior to that in 1998 she had established the Starry Night non-profit corporation, independently manages Max’s Place, which is named for Max Paladino, the childhood friend of Lannen’s son Peter. Paladino, who had neuro-devlopmental delays compatible with Asperger Syndrome – a mild form of autism that often goes undiagnosed, died in an accident in 2006.

“I thought we need to memorialize this little boy,” Lannen said. “Max was an amazing friend to Peter and that friendship needed to be remembered. You don’t get many friendships like that in a lifetime.”

World Red Cross Day

You can celebrate the birth of a movement and help others in need by coming to donate blood in early May.

May 8 marks World Red Cross Day, as well as the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of what is known today as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Dunant was a young Swiss businessman who advocated for the humane treatment of wartime sick and wounded. Dunant witnessed atrocities in 1859 during a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, and organized local people to come to the aid of injured soldiers. Upon his return to Geneva, Dunant called for the creation of national volunteer relief societies to assist during wartime. His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conventions, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide, including the American Red Cross.

“We encourage everyone to help continue his legacy and help people in need, wherever they are,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “Coming to donate blood to help hospital patients who need it for surgeries, cancer care, or to treat life-threatening accidents is one way you can help.”

The American Red Cross is among more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world devoted to alleviating human suffering wherever it is found.

“Dunant showed us that even when world events seem overwhelming, you can make a difference, simply by giving blood, volunteering or making a contribution through your American Red Cross,” said Kulman.

ATTENTION ARTISTS and VOLUNTEERS: We Need Your Help! Dark Elf Designs needs artist contributors and people to spread the word. We will be working on producing a benefit art book for the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. if you would like to be involved in the book please make sure all of your images are about 300 dpi and proportionate to 11"x17" pages. Images can be black and white or full color. (due to limitations some images may not be used) We are looking for uplifting pictures and powerful imagery featuring fire fighters, EMT's, Police, memorial pages, marathon runners, and any types of first responders doing what they do best. This is for charity so it is non-paid, make sure you sign your work there will be room in the book for crediting the artists so include all credits. the deadline for entries is May 31st, and proceeds look like they will be going to "The One Fund" Please share and repost.

As most of you know, our school plays football on very old and unsafe facilities, and competes in track and field without having a home track!

The MOAA has taken this problem on and is trying to provide these facilities to our school. We desperately need your support on this, so please save the dates and plan to attend! We want everyone in our community to be part of this tremendous effort!

The first event is an all you can eat taco dinner with the track team. At this event, we will be holding a silent auction of some incredible items, 50/50's, and induction ceremonies for our Morrice High School Hall of Fame. Our football Italian dinner in the fall was a huge success, and we want this event to be even better. Please mark it on your calendar and plan to attend. This will be a great evening!

World Red Cross Day

You can celebrate the birth of a movement and help others in need by coming to donate blood in early May.

May 8 marks World Red Cross Day, as well as the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of what is known today as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Dunant was a young Swiss businessman who advocated for the humane treatment of wartime sick and wounded. Dunant witnessed atrocities in 1859 during a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, and organized local people to come to the aid of injured soldiers. Upon his return to Geneva, Dunant called for the creation of national volunteer relief societies to assist during wartime. His work pointed the way to the future Geneva Conventions, and the formation of Red Cross societies worldwide, including the American Red Cross.

“We encourage everyone to help continue his legacy and help people in need, wherever they are,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “Coming to donate blood to help hospital patients who need it for surgeries, cancer care, or to treat life-threatening accidents is one way you can help.”

The American Red Cross is among more than 180 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world devoted to alleviating human suffering wherever it is found.

“Dunant showed us that even when world events seem overwhelming, you can make a difference, simply by giving blood, volunteering or making a contribution through your American Red Cross,” said Kulman.

There are many ways to become involved with the mission of the American Red Cross. To donate blood or find other opportunities contact the Red Cross at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.
