DESCRIPTION:PepperJill &amp\; Jack is a musical duo based in New York Ci
ty comprised of Stephen Bent and Shannon O'Neil (which one is PepperJill
remains a mystery). They debuted in March 2012\, performing in the Asto
ria Symphonic Choir's spring concert. PJ&amp\;J has played throughout NY
C in various bars and clubs\, always surprising audiences with their ecl
ectic style and instrumentation. A genre-defying duo\, they blend a Cole
Porter lyric sensibility with Simon &amp\; Garfunkel style duo vocal ha
rmonies. In a typical concert you'll hear everything from trombones to u
kuleles\, all used for maximum listener enjoyment. In early 2013 they we
re awarded a World Record for "Most Beatles References in a Single Song

DESCRIPTION:Shot Down Over Italy\, book signing and powerpoint presentat
 ion\n Presented by: John Lanza\, Author\n On May 26\, 1944\, a B-25 Mitc
hell bomber with a seven-man crew was shot down over Nazi-occupied Italy
 . At the time\, Italy was a battleground in a complex\, controversial\,
drawn-out\, and bloody war of attrition. When disaster struck\, the fate
of each crew member rested\, first\, on the ability of the pilot to con
trol the ship so that they could bail out\; and\, second\, on who reache
d them first when they hit the ground—Mussolini's Fascists\, Hitler's Na
zis\, or the partisans that formed the Italian Resistance. John Lanza\,
a nephew of one of the crew members on that fated flight\, will be at th
e Museum to discuss this fascinating true story and his book Shot Down O
ver Italy. Mr. Lanza will be on hand for a book signing after the presen
 tation.

DESCRIPTION:n the spring of 2005\, acclaimed environmental photographer
James Balog headed to the Arctic on a tricky assignment for National Geo
graphic: to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth’s changin
g climate. Even with a scientific upbringing\, Balog had been a skeptic
about climate change. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the b
iggest story in human history and sparked a challenge within him that wo
uld put his career and his very well-being at risk. Within months of tha
t first trip to Iceland\, the photographer conceived the boldest expedit
ion of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurer
s in tow\, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across
the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changin
g glaciers. Free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:The Margret and H.A. Rey Center Art Gallery opens an excitin
g new art exhibit on Saturday May 18\, 2013. The exhibit entitled “Impre
ssions of the North Country” by visiting Russian Artist Boris Oskin is t
he product of a two-month visit by Russian artist\, architect and diplom
atic attaché\, Boris Oskin and his wife Elena back in1992. Boris’ waterc
olors\, sketches and personal letters and correspondences will be on dis
play in the gallery from Saturday May 18- Saturday June 22\, 2013. The c
ollection left behind by Boris upon his return to Russia is now part of
the personal collection of local Watervillian\, Chris Larsen\, who has g
enerously offered to share its contents as well as his personal stories
and experiences with the Oskins. An opening reception will be held on Sa
turday May 25 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to se
e our landscape through the eyes of a Russian artist and hear the storie
s of his unique relationship with our own late Donald Jasinski\, who was
responsible for bringing Boris to the United States. Come hear stories
of Boris’ antics as well as how the trip was only possible after he left
the employ of the Communist Party. Rey Center Gallery hours are Wednesd
ay through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.\n Boris Oskin was born in Mo
scow in 1935\, but evacuated with his family from the city during the Ge
rman invasion. At the age of fifteen he started work as a metal smith at
the famous “Pravda” newspaper plant in Moscow. In 1952 he graduated fro
m school with a gold medal for his artistic abilities. While his school
directors urged him to pursue a career in painting\, his practical grand
mother persuaded him to become an architect. As an architect\, Boris des
igned and supervised the construction of many important buildings around
the world including the Soviet Consulate in Geteburg\, Sweden and the S
oviet Embassy in Guyana. Boris’ free time was spent painting and sketchi
ng\, completing a series of oils for the Gusevasholm Castle in Kunkbacks
\, Sweden. Boris enjoyed working in oils\, watercolors and sketches in g
raphite\, drawing his inspiration from the local scene\, wherever in the
world his work and art took him.\n Boris Oskin and Donald Jasinski met
in 1974 at an architectural convention. After exchanging the traditional
niceties of invitations to each other’s homes\, Donald and Boris went t
heir separate ways. They kept in touch through letters for a short perio
d of time and Donald would send Boris and his wife cosmetics and toiletr
ies that they were not able to get in their country. At some point\, Bor
is went to work for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the USSR and was no
longer allowed to have contact with his friend Donald\, sadly telling hi
m so in a letter. Seventeen years later\, in 1991\, Boris reconnected wi
th Donald after leaving the Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked for a for
mal invitation from Donald to visit the United States. The rest is histo
ry painted in the watercolors on display in “Impressions of the North Co
untry”.\n Margret and H.A. Rey\, authors of the Curious George children’
s books series and former summer residents of Waterville Valley\, New Ha
mpshire\, were artists and adventurers\, historians and naturalists\, ga
rdeners and environmental stewards. Today their spirit lives on in the M
argret and H.A. Rey Center\, a non-profit organization dedicated to hono
ring the Reys’ legacy through art\, science\, and adventure programs for
  all ages.

DESCRIPTION:Public Demo of Emergency Communications June 22-23\n \n Desp
ite the Internet\, cell phones\, email and modern communications\, every
year whole regions find themselves in the dark. Tornadoes\, fires\, sto
rms\, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave pe
ople without the means to communicate. In these cases\, the one consiste
nt service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio. These radio ope
rators\, often called “hams” provide backup communications for everythin
g from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even for the International Spa
ce Station. Your Town’s “hams” will join with thousands of other Amateur
Radio operators showing their emergency capabilities this weekend.\n \n
Over the past year\, the news has been full of reports of ham radio ope
rators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies i
n towns across America including the California wildfires\, winter storm
s\, tornadoes and other events world-wide. When trouble is brewing\, Ama
teur\n Radio’s people are often the first to provide rescuers with criti
cal information and communications.\n \n On the weekend of June 22-23\,
the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Strafford County ham
radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service i
s about as hams across the USA\n will be holding public demonstrations o
 f emergency communications abilities.\n \n This annual event\, called "F
ield Day" is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored
by the ARRL\, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only eme
rgency power supplies\, ham operators will construct emergency stations
in parks\, shopping malls\, schools and backyards around the country. Th
eir slogan\, "When All Else Fails\, Ham Radio Works” is more than just w
ords to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms with
out the use of phone systems\, internet or any other infrastructure that
can be compromised in a crisis. More than 35\,000 amateur radio operato
rs across the\n country participated in last year's event.\n \n They inv
ite the public to come and see ham radio’s new capabilities and learn ho
w to get their own FCC radio license before the next disaster strikes. A
mateur Radio is growing in the US. There are now over 700\,000 Amateur R
adio licensees in the US\, and more than 2.5 million around the world. T
hrough the ARRL’s Amateur Radio Emergency Services program\, ham volunte
ers provide both emergency communications for thousands of state and loc
al emergency response agencies and non-emergency community services too
 \, all for free.

Rey Center\, a non-profit organization dedicated to hono
ring the Reys’ legacy through art\, science\, and adventure programs for
  all ages.
