This is the March of Dimes biggest fundraiser and the nation’s oldest fundraising walk honoring babies, those born healthy and those that need help to survive and thrive. Dollars raised support March of Dimes research, education and community programs to help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies to begin healthy lives.

Funds raised by March for Babies in New Hampshire help support prenatal wellness programs, centering pregnancy sites, research grants, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) family support programs and advocacy efforts for stronger, healthier babies.

Acclaimed watercolor and acrylic artist featured at Portsmouth gallery

A one-man show featuring the eclectic artwork of Nashua-based artist Monty Whitfield will be featured throughout the month of May at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, N.H. The show will introduce Whitfield’s new Visionary line of art as well as some earlier pieces, which are inspired by nature, culture and ancient civilization. The exhibit, which opens on May 1, will run through May 31 in the East Gallery. An artist reception will be held on Friday, May 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. and will offer guests the opportunity to meet Whitfield.

Nine new acrylic paintings from Whitfield’s Visionary line will debut, as well as one smaller watercolor, “Chaco Canyon: Where the Sun Meets the Moon.” He describes his new work as akin to finding life in a new galaxy, on a newly found planet teeming with life. “My new line of art is full of exploration and experimentation,” said Whitfield. “It infuses the wondrous world of science, that at times feels and looks like science fiction.” Prevalent themes in his latest work include black holes, pulsars, quasars, bubble theory and parallel realities as well as Nikolai Tesla and the periodic table. Complex imagery and richly intense hues harken back to his earlier collection, yet Whitfield’s most recent work transports the viewer to far different vistas.

An award-winning watercolor and acrylic artist, Whitfield’s earlier pieces incorporate his love of ancient culture with elements of nature. The result is an intricate fusion of fine detail and character, striking colors and subject matter, immediately drawing the viewer into Whitfield’s world. A juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association, Whitfield is affiliated with the National Watercolor Society and the Sharon Arts Center in Peterborough, New Hampshire. His painting, “Golden Eagle,” is in the permanent collection of Nashua City Hall and his award-winning paintings are featured in galleries throughout the Northeast.

In addition to Whitfield’s one-man show, the New Hampshire Art Association will also be featuring an Arts and Artisanship Collaboration with the NH Furniture Masters Association, which will also exhibit throughout the month of May in the Main Salon at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery. MARSHFIELD STATION, NH - The Mount Washington Cog Railway opened this weekend for its 144th season of bringing visitors from as far away as Russia to the summit of the Northeast's highest peak. The season marks the 30th year of ownership for the Presby and Bedor families, and extends into January 1.

This year, the Cog will be offering new events including a Ride & Observatory Tour, Photo Workshop Tour, and a Railfans’ Day and a “Name That Train!” contest for the new biodiesel engine. Details for all events can be found at thecog.com

As part of each 3-hour round trip on the Cog, Passengers spend about an hour on the summit, where those ticket holders get free admission to the Mount Washington Observatory Museum, which provides a fascinating look at the weather history of the peak. The history, lore and legend of New Hampshire's most fabled mountain is told by the Granite State's favorite storyteller, Fritz Wetherbee, who narrates the onboard audio tour.

Throughout the season, there are special trains and discounts for our guests. Beginning June 15, a vintage steam engine will run daily at 8:15 a.m. Starting June 17, everyone saves with $9 off their ticket on the last train of the day. Even this Fall, there is a “Five for Fall” special, which offers a $5 discount beginning in September. The details on these special trains and discounts can be found online.

Old Peppersass, the train that actually built the Cog Railway (named for its pepper-sauce bottle shape) , is on display at the Marshfield Base Station and the Cog Railway Museum, which is full of memorabilia about this pioneering railroad. This six hour intensive intermediate level class introduces finer, Domestic Soutache, reveals the secrets to working with larger, flat beads and incorporating rhinestone chain. Bonus skill; learn to create delicate, open areas that show Swarovski crystals and other translucent beads at their sparkling best!
Students need to bring their own pair of sharp craft scissors, as well as a small desk lamp (if desired).
As this class runs a full 6 hours, students are encouraged to bring lunch, snacks, and drinks!

**Students must have basic soutache experience to enroll in this course. This includes any basic soutache course taken with Amee at any venue she has taught at!**

Tuition is $55.00 per student, with an additional $40.00 materials fee to be paid to the instructor at the time of the class (this fee covers a Soutache Kit, which includes everything you’ll need). Space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

This fundraiser is taking place in order to raise money to purchase a children's loaner hearing aid device (BAHA) for the Audiology Department in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center located in Lebanon, NH.
When my infant son with Microtia was being seen at Dartmouth-Hitchcock for his hearing loss he was given a loaned soft head band hearing aid. The first time he wore it was a special moment. As they turned it on, you could see the reaction and surprise in his eyes. During our trial run we were allowed to borrow the hearing aid for two weeks. These two weeks were a critical time in his infancy, hearing from both ears he started babbling baby talk and moving around...headed on the rack track for development. As we were waiting for our own personal device to be approved through insurance, we had to sent the hearing aid back for other children to borrow. Our son's development came to a stop without the BAHA. A wonderful woman at the audiology department knew of the wait time and allowed us to borrow the hearing aid for an extended amount of time. Though we were so very grateful, we knew that meant some other child might have to go without hearing because of us. Please help us fund the Audiology department in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with another hearing aid (BAHA) so they are able to loan hearing to more children. No child should go without the gift so many of us are infrequently grateful for.

New Hampshire Antique Co-op is pleased to present Sailing Home! Marine Paintings 18th Century to Present, a fine art exhibit and sale consisting of more than 100 works of marine and coastal paintings. From traditional nineteenth century ship portraits to modern and contemporary nautical representations, this comprehensive marine show highlights the natural rugged beauty of the New England coast that has long inspired artists and still continues to do so today.

This exhibition is on view at New Hampshire Antique Co-op in the Upstairs Gallery and Tower Gallery through September 30, 2013. New works will continue to be added to the show during its duration and lectures in conjunction with the exhibit will be announced.

Marine Paintings 18th Century to Present, a fine art exhibit and sale consisting of more than 100 works of marine and coastal paintings. From traditional nineteenth century ship portraits to modern and contemporary nautical representations, this comprehensive marine show highlights the natural rugged beauty of the New England coast that has long inspired artists and still continues to do so today.

The Margret and H.A. Rey Center Art Gallery opens an exciting new art exhibit on Saturday May 18, 2013. The exhibit entitled “Impressions of the North Country” by visiting Russian Artist Boris Oskin is the product of a two-month visit by Russian artist, architect and diplomatic attaché, Boris Oskin and his wife Elena back in1992. Boris’ watercolors, sketches and personal letters and correspondences will be on display in the gallery from Saturday May 18- Saturday June 22, 2013. The collection left behind by Boris upon his return to Russia is now part of the personal collection of local Watervillian, Chris Larsen, who has generously offered to share its contents as well as his personal stories and experiences with the Oskins. An opening reception will be held on Saturday May 25 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to see our landscape through the eyes of a Russian artist and hear the stories of his unique relationship with our own late Donald Jasinski, who was responsible for bringing Boris to the United States. Come hear stories of Boris’ antics as well as how the trip was only possible after he left the employ of the Communist Party. Rey Center Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Boris Oskin was born in Moscow in 1935, but evacuated with his family from the city during the German invasion. At the age of fifteen he started work as a metal smith at the famous “Pravda” newspaper plant in Moscow. In 1952 he graduated from school with a gold medal for his artistic abilities. While his school directors urged him to pursue a career in painting, his practical grandmother persuaded him to become an architect. As an architect, Boris designed and supervised the construction of many important buildings around the world including the Soviet Consulate in Geteburg, Sweden and the Soviet Embassy in Guyana. Boris’ free time was spent painting and sketching, completing a series of oils for the Gusevasholm Castle in Kunkbacks, Sweden. Boris enjoyed working in oils, watercolors and sketches in graphite, drawing his inspiration from the local scene, wherever in the world his work and art took him.
Boris Oskin and Donald Jasinski met in 1974 at an architectural convention. After exchanging the traditional niceties of invitations to each other’s homes, Donald and Boris went their separate ways. They kept in touch through letters for a short period of time and Donald would send Boris and his wife cosmetics and toiletries that they were not able to get in their country. At some point, Boris went to work for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the USSR and was no longer allowed to have contact with his friend Donald, sadly telling him so in a letter. Seventeen years later, in 1991, Boris reconnected with Donald after leaving the Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked for a formal invitation from Donald to visit the United States. The rest is history painted in the watercolors on display in “Impressions of the North Country”.
Margret and H.A. Rey, authors of the Curious George children’s books series and former summer residents of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, were artists and adventurers, historians and naturalists, gardeners and environmental stewards. Today their spirit lives on in the Margret and H.A. Rey Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys’ legacy through art, science, and adventure programs for all ages.

Milford Rotary Club Assists in Organizing First Time Event at the
Boys & Girls Club of the Spouhegan Valley

Bridges, a Nashua-based domestic and sexual violence support group, and the Milford Rotary Club have teamed up to organize and host an informational cocktail and fundraising reception at the Amato Theater at the Boys and Girls Club of the Souhegan Valley . The event is free to attend and will feature testimonials from Bridges clients who will share their experiences of survival and of the impact of Bridges in their personal situations.
The event will mirror a similar annual event to be held in Nashua for the seventh time on May 15th at the Crowne Plaza hotel. This will be the first time Bridges has hosted such an event in Milford and the proceeds will be used to support the work of Bridges’ Milford office on Elm Street in Milford. Guests will be treated to complimentary hors d’oeuvres and other treats and a cash bar will be available.
“We are very excited to bring this event to Milford and help tell Bridges story while raising money for our Milford office,” said Pam Auer, Development Director for Bridges. “Our Nashua event raised over $100,000 from over 350 guests. The event had grown to the point where we thought we may need to find a new location to grow. Thankfully, the Milford Rootary Club agreed to help us put on a Milford version this year.”
“The Milford Rotary Club recently made a multi-year financial commitment totaling $30,000 to build their Rosebush Endowment, but we also wanted to do something more hands-on,” said Ryan Hansen, President of the Milford Rotary Club. “As part of our commitment, the club is working with Bridges to increase public awareness and understanding about their organization and services. Unfortunately, Bridges is a much needed community resource in our area. If we can help Bridges to break the cyle of violence that exists, we will see a reduction in so many other areas of need that stem from an unstable or dangerous home life.”

A debut novel drawing upon the author's service in the Peace Corps!

Tom Young wants to make a difference in the world. He joins the Peace Corps and is sent to an impoverished farm community in remote southern Chile where a reforestation project is the campesinos' only hope for a better future.
Tom finds himself in a breathtakingly beautiful land from a bygone era. Horses and oxen provide transportation, light is from kerosene lamps, and water is fetched with buckets from springs. He is drawn to the closeness of Chilean family life, and desperately wants to fit in as he struggles with the language and customs. Fighting depression and loneliness, he slowly adapts, but is shocked when brutal acts of violence rock the community.

About the author: David Mather served in southern Chile with the Peace Corps from 1968 - 70. He was the most isolated volunteer in his program, and the two years in the Peace Corps strongly influenced him. Upon his return, he bought land in Lyme, N.H., and built a cabin in the woods. He has lived off-grid for over forty years. Self-educated in forestry, he founded a successful specialty lumber business that sold rare domestic woods nationwide. He has traveled extensively, especially throughout Latin America, and returned twice to Chile to do research for his book. He and his wife now split their time between Lyme and a small fishing village on Florida's gulf coast. One For The Road is his first novel.

Methods, Models, & Tools is an intensive five-day course, presented by the Center on Aging and Community Living, the Institute on Disability, and the Browne Center, designed to help develop the competencies needed to facilitate consumer and family-directed career, education and life planning. The course incorporates lecture, role-playing, action learning, and peer support to provide an interactive forum for participants to develop and practice effective group facilitation skills. The curriculum addresses theories of group development, offering experiential methods for process design, questioning and recording skills, and strategic planning. Models of situational leadership, team performance, conflict management and principled negotiation are translated to the context of person-centered futures planning.

The Margret and H.A. Rey Center Art Gallery opens an exciting new art exhibit on Saturday May 18, 2013. The exhibit entitled “Impressions of the North Country” by visiting Russian Artist Boris Oskin is the product of a two-month visit by Russian artist, architect and diplomatic attaché, Boris Oskin and his wife Elena back in1992. Boris’ watercolors, sketches and personal letters and correspondences will be on display in the gallery from Saturday May 18- Saturday June 22, 2013. The collection left behind by Boris upon his return to Russia is now part of the personal collection of local Watervillian, Chris Larsen, who has generously offered to share its contents as well as his personal stories and experiences with the Oskins. An opening reception will be held on Saturday May 25 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to see our landscape through the eyes of a Russian artist and hear the stories of his unique relationship with our own late Donald Jasinski, who was responsible for bringing Boris to the United States. Come hear stories of Boris’ antics as well as how the trip was only possible after he left the employ of the Communist Party. Rey Center Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Boris Oskin was born in Moscow in 1935, but evacuated with his family from the city during the German invasion. At the age of fifteen he started work as a metal smith at the famous “Pravda” newspaper plant in Moscow. In 1952 he graduated from school with a gold medal for his artistic abilities. While his school directors urged him to pursue a career in painting, his practical grandmother persuaded him to become an architect. As an architect, Boris designed and supervised the construction of many important buildings around the world including the Soviet Consulate in Geteburg, Sweden and the Soviet Embassy in Guyana. Boris’ free time was spent painting and sketching, completing a series of oils for the Gusevasholm Castle in Kunkbacks, Sweden. Boris enjoyed working in oils, watercolors and sketches in graphite, drawing his inspiration from the local scene, wherever in the world his work and art took him.
Boris Oskin and Donald Jasinski met in 1974 at an architectural convention. After exchanging the traditional niceties of invitations to each other’s homes, Donald and Boris went their separate ways. They kept in touch through letters for a short period of time and Donald would send Boris and his wife cosmetics and toiletries that they were not able to get in their country. At some point, Boris went to work for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the USSR and was no longer allowed to have contact with his friend Donald, sadly telling him so in a letter. Seventeen years later, in 1991, Boris reconnected with Donald after leaving the Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked for a formal invitation from Donald to visit the United States. The rest is history painted in the watercolors on display in “Impressions of the North Country”.
Margret and H.A. Rey, authors of the Curious George children’s books series and former summer residents of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, were artists and adventurers, historians and naturalists, gardeners and environmental stewards. Today their spirit lives on in the Margret and H.A. Rey Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys’ legacy through art, science, and adventure programs for all ages.

Waterville Valley Resort Combines Fishing and Chowder this Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend signals the start of the summer season in Waterville Valley, with the annual youth fishing derby, outdoor concert, and 24th Annual Chowderfest & Brews.

On Saturday May 25, the annual Casting for Kirby Youth Fishing Derby will have scores of kids trying to catch Corcoran Pond’s legendary Kirby. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with fishing starting at 8:30 a.m. for ages 7 and under. Children 8 to 15 years will begin fishing at 8:45 a.m. The first 100 entrants get a t-shirt and starter bait. Prizes will be awarded across age groups beginning at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is $6 a participant if completed by May 17. After May 17, registration increases to $10.

In addition, there will be pond ecology programs, a casting contest, and other activities for kids’ enjoyment. The event is sponsored by the Waterville Valley Recreation and Public Safety Departments.

For the 24th year the Town Square in Waterville Valley will host the Annual Chowderfest & Brews on Sunday, May 26 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sample a variety of New England chowders from local area restaurants. With a $7.50 admission ($5.00 for ages 12 and under) chowder lovers will receive sample-sized tastes of each chowder and a ballot to vote for their favorite batch. It will be a throw down Iron Chef style for the ultimate prize, the “Golden Clam” Award.

The Lantern Restaurant will host a brew tent in the center of Town Square from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., where seasonal ales from New Hampshire’s Smuttynose Brewery will be on tap. Smuttynose was founded in 1994 by the folks who started the Northampton and Portsmouth Breweries.

Chowder and seasonal ale will pair well with a free concert performed in the Town Square gazebo. ‘Tore Down House’, with band members Mark Huzar (Guitar), John Michaud (Drums), and Dave Guilmette (Bass), is based out of Manchester, NH. The band plays many classic rock and blues favorites as well as original songs that are always well received. This three member Rock & Blues band delivers a No Holds Barred onstage performance playing many styles that are sure to please everyone.

The Waterville Valley Summer Unlimited lodging package includes boating, mountain biking, tennis, golf, bike rentals, access to the White Mountain Athletic Club, use of the Waterville Valley shuttle, and scenic chair lift rides up Snow's Mountain. The Margret and H.A. Rey Center Art Gallery opens an exciting new art exhibit on Saturday May 18, 2013. The exhibit entitled “Impressions of the North Country” by visiting Russian Artist Boris Oskin is the product of a two-month visit by Russian artist, architect and diplomatic attaché, Boris Oskin and his wife Elena back in1992. Boris’ watercolors, sketches and personal letters and correspondences will be on display in the gallery from Saturday May 18- Saturday June 22, 2013. The collection left behind by Boris upon his return to Russia is now part of the personal collection of local Watervillian, Chris Larsen, who has generously offered to share its contents as well as his personal stories and experiences with the Oskins. An opening reception will be held on Saturday May 25 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to see our landscape through the eyes of a Russian artist and hear the stories of his unique relationship with our own late Donald Jasinski, who was responsible for bringing Boris to the United States. Come hear stories of Boris’ antics as well as how the trip was only possible after he left the employ of the Communist Party. Rey Center Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Boris Oskin was born in Moscow in 1935, but evacuated with his family from the city during the German invasion. At the age of fifteen he started work as a metal smith at the famous “Pravda” newspaper plant in Moscow. In 1952 he graduated from school with a gold medal for his artistic abilities. While his school directors urged him to pursue a career in painting, his practical grandmother persuaded him to become an architect. As an architect, Boris designed and supervised the construction of many important buildings around the world including the Soviet Consulate in Geteburg, Sweden and the Soviet Embassy in Guyana. Boris’ free time was spent painting and sketching, completing a series of oils for the Gusevasholm Castle in Kunkbacks, Sweden. Boris enjoyed working in oils, watercolors and sketches in graphite, drawing his inspiration from the local scene, wherever in the world his work and art took him.
Boris Oskin and Donald Jasinski met in 1974 at an architectural convention. After exchanging the traditional niceties of invitations to each other’s homes, Donald and Boris went their separate ways. They kept in touch through letters for a short period of time and Donald would send Boris and his wife cosmetics and toiletries that they were not able to get in their country. At some point, Boris went to work for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the USSR and was no longer allowed to have contact with his friend Donald, sadly telling him so in a letter. Seventeen years later, in 1991, Boris reconnected with Donald after leaving the Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked for a formal invitation from Donald to visit the United States. The rest is history painted in the watercolors on display in “Impressions of the North Country”.
Margret and H.A. Rey, authors of the Curious George children’s books series and former summer residents of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, were artists and adventurers, historians and naturalists, gardeners and environmental stewards. Today their spirit lives on in the Margret and H.A. Rey Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys’ legacy through art, science, and adventure programs for all ages.

The men and women of The American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75, Pittsfield, NH will hold their annual Memorial Day observance on Sunday, May 26, 2013. According to Merrill Vaughan, Commander of the Legion Post, “we hold our observance on the Sunday before Memorial Day as we rotate our Memorial Services among the four major churches in Pittsfield and this year it will be with Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at 8:00 am.” This service allows us to honor our departed comrades who many died on the fields of battles. This tradition is deep in the roots of The Pittsfield American Legion Post. Then we turn our efforts for the observance that will begin at 1:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial on Main St.
This year we have some changes to the program from which we have normally been accustomed to. We are lucky to have some talent this year along with a guest speaker. Commander Vaughan goes on to describe the entertainment; “before the ceremony begins, the Winslow sisters (Madelyn and Grace) of Barnstead, will perform a couple of numbers for us. We are lucky to have Ms. Stephanie Joyce back to sing the National Anthem and several members of Pittsfield Singers will perform for us in the middle of the program”. The Guest speaker will be Colonel James Allard, U. S. Army (Ret) who is also a new member to our Legion Post. “Of course we will close the observance with our traditional flower basket presentation followed by the rifle salute and TAPS.”

Ceremonies honoring our Nations War dead will be held at the Bow High School Football Field upon conclusion of the parade by various dignitaries, playing of our National Anthem and other songs performed by the Bow High School Marching Band, Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire Pipes and Drums, Bow High School Chorus and the Concord Coachmen. Invocation well be given by Reverend Greenleaf of Saint Paul’s Academy, and a Roll Call of New Hampshire’s fallen patriots will be read followed by Taps.

Marine Paintings 18th Century to Present, a fine art exhibit and sale consisting of more than 100 works of marine and coastal paintings. From traditional nineteenth century ship portraits to modern and contemporary nautical representations, this comprehensive marine show highlights the natural rugged beauty of the New England coast that has long inspired artists and still continues to do so today.

This exhibition is on view at New Hampshire Antique Co-op in the Upstairs Gallery and Tower Gallery through September 30, 2013. New works will continue to be added to the show during its duration and lectures in conjunction with the exhibit will be announced.

Featured artists include Alfred T. Bricher (1837-1908), George Curtis (1816-1881), Mauritz F. H. De Haas (1832-1895), Walter Granville-Smith (1870-1938), Emile Gruppe (1896-1978), Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921), Max Kuehne (1880-1968), Myron Lechay (1898-1972), Wendell Macy (1845-1913), George Herbert McCord (1848-1909), Mary Blood Mellen (1819-1886), George Washington Nicholson (1832-1912), William Edward Norton (1843-1916), Henry Ward Ranger (1858-1916), Warren Sheppard (1855-1937), William Pierce Stubbs (1842-1909), Anthony Thieme (1888-1954), William Torgerson (1833-1890) and many others. Also included in this exhibit are contemporary New England artists William R. Davis, Robert Gruppe, Erick Ingraham, Erik Koeppel, Chris Myott and Lauren Sansaricq. In addition to paintings, this exhibit will showcase other nautical finds such as sailors' valentines, a bosun whistle collection, ship models and more.

The Margret and H.A. Rey Center Art Gallery opens an exciting new art exhibit on Saturday May 18, 2013. The exhibit entitled “Impressions of the North Country” by visiting Russian Artist Boris Oskin is the product of a two-month visit by Russian artist, architect and diplomatic attaché, Boris Oskin and his wife Elena back in1992. Boris’ watercolors, sketches and personal letters and correspondences will be on display in the gallery from Saturday May 18- Saturday June 22, 2013. The collection left behind by Boris upon his return to Russia is now part of the personal collection of local Watervillian, Chris Larsen, who has generously offered to share its contents as well as his personal stories and experiences with the Oskins. An opening reception will be held on Saturday May 25 from 6:30 -8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to see our landscape through the eyes of a Russian artist and hear the stories of his unique relationship with our own late Donald Jasinski, who was responsible for bringing Boris to the United States. Come hear stories of Boris’ antics as well as how the trip was only possible after he left the employ of the Communist Party. Rey Center Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Boris Oskin was born in Moscow in 1935, but evacuated with his family from the city during the German invasion. At the age of fifteen he started work as a metal smith at the famous “Pravda” newspaper plant in Moscow. In 1952 he graduated from school with a gold medal for his artistic abilities. While his school directors urged him to pursue a career in painting, his practical grandmother persuaded him to become an architect. As an architect, Boris designed and supervised the construction of many important buildings around the world including the Soviet Consulate in Geteburg, Sweden and the Soviet Embassy in Guyana. Boris’ free time was spent painting and sketching, completing a series of oils for the Gusevasholm Castle in Kunkbacks, Sweden. Boris enjoyed working in oils, watercolors and sketches in graphite, drawing his inspiration from the local scene, wherever in the world his work and art took him.
Boris Oskin and Donald Jasinski met in 1974 at an architectural convention. After exchanging the traditional niceties of invitations to each other’s homes, Donald and Boris went their separate ways. They kept in touch through letters for a short period of time and Donald would send Boris and his wife cosmetics and toiletries that they were not able to get in their country. At some point, Boris went to work for the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the USSR and was no longer allowed to have contact with his friend Donald, sadly telling him so in a letter. Seventeen years later, in 1991, Boris reconnected with Donald after leaving the Foreign Affairs Ministry and asked for a formal invitation from Donald to visit the United States. The rest is history painted in the watercolors on display in “Impressions of the North Country”.
Margret and H.A. Rey, authors of the Curious George children’s books series and former summer residents of Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, were artists and adventurers, historians and naturalists, gardeners and environmental stewards. Today their spirit lives on in the Margret and H.A. Rey Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys’ legacy through art, science, and adventure programs for all ages.
