This program is designed exclusively to acquaint first-year students with life at Worcester State University. Whether you will be a resident student or commuter student, you will enjoy meeting members of the Worcester State University community while participating in a wide range of interesting sessions. These will include academic sessions and opportunities to get acquainted with other members of the First-Year Student class as well as others in your major. This session is for students enrolling in the following programs: biology, biotechnology, business administration, chemistry, communication, economics, geography, history, MCPHS joint program in pre-pharmacy, natural science, pre-medicine, and undeclared. This program is full. The primary goal of this institute is to deepen your understanding of the math you teach, regardless of whether you plan to use the Singapore books as your primary texts. Strengthening your understanding will help you to be more effective as a teacher. This institute will provide a supportive, yet challenging environment for professionals working together.

The program runs from June 24 - 27, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Singapore Mathematics is a term used to refer to math textbooks from the small Asian country of Singapore. Since 1995, Singapore has been one of the top performing countries in mathematics in the TIMMS study. Richard Bisk professor of mathematics at Worcester State University, has provided content based professional development for teachers using these books since 2000.

Summer 2013 Author Institute

The Author Institute is held each year at the end of June and features notable and award winning authors who present to graduate students and teachers from across New England. It takes place over a one week period and features a different children’s author each day. The presenters/authors work diligently to present not only their literature, but also a variety of genre’s and literacy elements, ways to motivate and develop student interest in literature and authoring and formalizes teacher based activities and creativity for classroom use and interest in writing by both teachers and students. The day consists of author presentations, background to the literature being presented, roundtable discussions and activities, personal insight into author process and life experience and author signing. Author and book interest and readability levels span from K through the middle grades/school.

Several award winning authors are featured at the 2013 Authors’ Institute. The schedule for the Visiting Authors are as follows:

Cost: $685.00 (Includes Lunch)

The hours each day are from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Students are required to attend each day for the full day, and to complete all projects as outlined at the start of the Institute. Lunch is provided and an author autograph session is usually scheduled during this time to accommodate students. Students may use the Institute as an elective in the Masters’ of Education Program, provided a research paper on the Importance of Literacy in the Classroom is handed in by the last day of the Institute. All papers will follow APA style, according to the guidelines of the graduate school in education.
