The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre
Wednesday, June 19, 2013, 8pm

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Price - Low: $20
Price - High: $25
Directed By: Mike Webb
Written By: Music and Lyrics by: William Finn; Book by: Rachel Sheinkin; Conceived by: Rebecca Feldman; Additional material by: Jay Reiss
Ticket Phone: (815) 921-2160
Ticket Web Link: www.rockvalleycollege.edu…
Contact: Mike Webb
More info: www.rvcstarlight.com

Freeport Art Museum
121 N. Harlem
Saturday, June 22, 2013, 3 – 5pm

What does a girl’s self-portrait say about her? What can her own art teach her about how she looks at herself? Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois (GSNI) invites all local girls in grades 4–5 to participate in Express Yourself at the Freeport Art Museum, 121 N. Harlem, on Saturday, June 22, from 3–5 p.m. Studying famous self-portraits as a guide, girls will create their own self-portraits by using expressive color with oil pastels and words that describe each girl’s unique personality. This program is designed for girls interested in building self-esteem and learning about art.

Program fee is $15 per registered Girl Scout; $27 per non-registered Girl Scout and includes all art supplies and instruction. The additional $12 registers girls as Girl Scouts and allows them to participate in this program and many others throughout the year! For more information, call Stacie Simpson at 815-235-8777, Ext. 7148, or e-mail ssimpson@girlscoutsni.org.
Les Misérables

Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre
Wednesday, June 26, 2013, 8pm

This international smash-hit may be the most popular musical in the world. In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long. Epic, grand and uplifting, LES MISÉRABLES packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. The sung-through pop opera is ideal for a cast of exceptional singers and overflows with melodies that are already standards. A spectacle on Broadway and in London, LES MISÉRABLES is equally effective with a minimal set; it is its powerful affirmation of the human spirit that has made LES MISÉRABLES a popular masterpiece.

Price - Low: $20
Price - High: $25
Directed By: Mike Webb
Written By: Book by: Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg; Music by: Claude-Michel Schönberg; Lyrics by: Herbert Kretzmer
Age Range: All Ages
Ticket Phone: (815) 921-2160
Ticket Web Link: www.rockvalleycollege.edu…
Contact: Mike Webb
More info: www.rvcstarlight.com

Good Agricultural Practices Workshop

Boone County Extension Office
205 Cadillac Ct. Unit 5
Belvidere, IL 61008
Friday, June 28, 2013, 9:30am – 4pm

Good Agricultural Practices Workshop Offered
Food safety begins on the farm. For fresh fruit and vegetable producers this is particularly important because most of the fresh produce they grow is eaten raw. Recent produce-associated foodborne illness outbreaks have heightened public awareness of produce food safety and increased the demand by fresh produce buyers to have third party auditors verify farm food safety practices. In all produce operations, it is critical to be aware of and implement food safety practices such as Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) so that microbial risks can be minimized. A simple procedure such as hand washing is highly effective at managing pathogens on workers’ hands, but many farms do not have a written farm food safety plan or a worker training program in place.
University of Illinois Extension is teaming with University of Cornell Extension and USDA to offer a “Good Agricultural Practices Workshop” on Friday, June 28, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Boone County Extension office in Belvidere, located at 205 Cadillac Ct. Unit 5. This offering was inspired by the desire to keep fresh fruit and vegetable producers in Illinois competitive in the marketplace. The increasing focus on GAPs and third party audit requirements are being utilized by the retail and the food service industry to identify growers who have implemented GAPs and have a verified farm food safety plan. These growers are getting their business. Producers and/or their managers will benefit from attending this workshop to become GAPs-certified.
Les Misérables

Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre
Friday, June 28, 2013, 8pm

Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum
411 Kent Street
Rockford, IL 61102
Saturday, June 29, 2013, 1 – 4pm

Victorian Babbles and Baubles, June 29-September 15, shows the distinctness that is the 19th century while detailing the widely varying styles and aesthetic choices from the personal collection of the Tinker Family. A Victorian woman was defined by what she wore and how she accessorized it. Her choices could have lasting meaning throughout the community and would influence how others saw and interacted with her. This exhibit shows exactly what it meant for a middle to upper class female to be fully dressed during the Victorian Era, which includes everything from shoes and fans to broaches and headwear. A spectacle on Broadway and in London, LES MISÉRABLES is equally effective with a minimal set; it is its powerful affirmation of the human spirit that has made LES MISÉRABLES a popular masterpiece.

Price - Low: $20
Price - High: $25
Directed By: Mike Webb
Written By: Book by: Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg; Music by: Claude-Michel Schönberg; Lyrics by: Herbert Kretzmer
Age Range: All Ages
Ticket Phone: (815) 921-2160
Ticket Web Link: www.rockvalleycollege.edu…
Contact: Mike Webb
More info: www.rvcstarlight.com

Kids Muddy Madness

Westwood Park, morton, illinois
Saturday, July 13, 2013, 8 – 11am

We hope you will consider joining us for the 2nd annual Kids' Muddy Madness to support St. Jude mud run. Our event is sure to be the highlight of your summer. Hopefully, all the information you need is included in this website, but if we've missed something, be sure to contact us and we'll answer any questions you might have.

We have a couple of favors to ask, if you don't mind. First, tell everyone you know about this event! We are hoping to get 1000 kids to come out and get dirty in 2013.

Second, email or share this with everyone in your contacts list- the more that know what we are doing, the better our event will be.

Third, ask all of your family and friends to donate to you so you can be the top fundraising participant!

Last, please check out our Sponsorship opportunities. We want to make sure that every dollar the kids raise goes directly to the kids at St. Jude, so if you help us underwrite some of our needed materials or supplies, our event will be awesome and we'll raise a whole bunch of money for kids fighting cancer!

Age Range: Children
Gender: Coed
Contact: Michelle Parker
More info: www.kidsmiddymadness.com

Victorian Babbles and Baubles

Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum
411 Kent Street
Rockford, IL 61102
Saturday, July 13, 2013, 1 – 4pm

Victorian Babbles and Baubles, June 29-September 15, shows the distinctness that is the 19th century while detailing the widely varying styles and aesthetic choices from the personal collection of the Tinker Family. A Victorian woman was defined by what she wore and how she accessorized it. Her choices could have lasting meaning throughout the community and would influence how others saw and interacted with her. This exhibit shows exactly what it meant for a middle to upper class female to be fully dressed during the Victorian Era, which includes everything from shoes and fans to broaches and headwear.
