U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 03-03 will provide free Vessel Safety Checks at three locations in the Chugiak-Eagle River area between May 4 and 19. Vessel safety checkers will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 4 pm. at American Legion Post 33 on Saturday, May 4; at VFW Post 9785 on May 11; and at the Eagle River Fred Meyer store on May 18 and 19.
Any boater interested in knowing more about their vessel’s condition before launching can bring the boat by for a check of its systems and safety gear. These checks are completely voluntary and there is no penalty for not passing the check.
Many insurance companies offer a discount for boats that earn the “Seal of Safety” from the Auxiliary. For additional information or to arrange for an examination on a different day, call Tom Suellentrop at 688-3906.
The Auxiliary is also accepting serviceable used adult and children’s flotation devices that will be donated to the Kids Don’t Float life jacket loaner program.

The International Migratory Bird Day event at the Alaska Zoo on Sunday, May 19th will allow visitors to explore activity stations based on the life cycles of migratory birds! Honor Flight: A Fundraising Movie for The Last Frontier Honor Flight

Honor Flight, the movie, is a heartwarming documentary about 4 living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to offer the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers fly thousands of WWII vets to Wash DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2005. These trips are called "honor flights," and for the veterans it's often the first time they've been thanked - and it's the last trip of their lives. Last Frontier Honor Flight is raising funds to start offering honor flights to Alaska veterans.

This class will give a brief overview of what merchant processing is and how it can affect your business. We will discuss contracts, rates and the difference between independent credit card companies and bank credit card companies. Also discussed will be PCI compliance and how it could affect your processing this year. Learn the best way to process cards and keep your cost down. Glenn Highway Reconstruction Open House
The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is hosting an Open House for the Glenn Highway MP 34-42 Reconstruction Project.
Stop by the Palmer Community Center anytime between 4 and 7 pm on Wednesday, May 22nd and see the highway design as it has evolved with input from you, the City of Palmer, Mat-Su Borough, Alaska Railroad and other agencies, landowners and stakeholders. This design will form the basis for acquisition of right of way that is scheduled to begin this fall.
Design began in 2008 to accommodate increasing levels of traffic by adding lanes, widened shoulders, and other traffic and safety improvements.

Craig Mishler presents his new book, The Blind Man and the Loon” The Story of a Tale
In The Blind Man and the Loon: The Story of a Tale, folklorist Craig Mishler goes back to 1827, tracing the story’s emergence across Greenland and North America in manuscripts, books, and in the visual arts and other media such as film, music, and dance theater. Examining and comparing the story’s variants and permutations across cultures in detail, Mishler brings the individual storyteller into his analysis of how the tale changed over time, considering how storytellers and the oral tradition function within various societies. Two maps unequivocally demonstrate the routes the story has traveled. The result is a masterful compilation and analysis of Native oral traditions that sheds light on how folktales spread and are adapted by widely diverse cultures.

Jerry’s family is one of hundreds of thousands who bathed, drank, and cooked with water contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals at the North Carolina Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune.
He lost his nine year old daughter, Janey, to leukemia in 1985. Jerry has dedicated his life to helping other victims of the contamination at Camp Lejeune, many of whom are men who developed breast cancer.
In his pursuit of justice, Jerry illuminates how current policies contribute to disease clusters and works for policies that will prevent contamination and protect community health.
His story, along with others who suffered tragedy from the water at Camp Lejeune, has been documented in the film, “Semper Fi: Always Faithful.”

Jerry Ensminger is a former Marine Corps Sergeant and national hero who investigated and uncovered the Marine Corps cover up of groundwater contamination at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and exposed a large cancer cluster.

The Film: Semper Fi: Always Faithful takes a personal look at a public health and environmental crisis. The documentary follows Jerry Ensminger, a retired Marine Corps drill instructor, who lost his daughter to leukemia in 1985. Volunteers Needed for Marine Debris Cleanup of the Beaches on the Kodiak Road System 8-9 June 2013

In response to the Global crisis and local threat of marine debris pollution, the Island Trails Network, based in Kodiak, is sponsoring a weekend of community marine debris clean up and removal from the beaches that are accessible from the Kodiak road system the weekend of 8 & 9 June 2013. Participants can register to clean a beach or beaches of their choice from an interactive Google map on-iine. Island Trails Network will provide clean up kits, a handout with a safety briefing, and will receive the marine debris for recycling off-island.
