The Brahms, Borodins and Bernsteins of Brisbane

Following the success of the first Brisbane composers' concert, hear more of our brilliant musical talent in the second of the Brisbane composers’ series. Principal Queensland Symphony Orchestra tubist Thomas Allely and Mitchell Leigh collaborate in a world premier performance of Mitchell Leigh's tuba concerto. Mitchell, though much better known as a pianist, has composed numerous works over the years. The tuba concerto was composed in 2011 especially for this international award-winning tubist. The enigmatic and sensual poetry of American poet E. E. Cummings provides the text for three songs for soprano and piano by Brisbane composer, conductor and music educator, Tim Sherlock. ‘anyone lived in a pretty how town’ is a child-like fable exploring the themes of difference and prejudice. ‘it may not always be so’ is a song of resignation, lamenting the pain of rejected love. ‘i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)’ celebrates the experience of profound love. Formed 11 years ago by Benjamin… Programs: Music that resonates. Venue: Brisbane City Hall. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, 12:00 AM – 1:00 AM.
