Annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive

National Holidays About one in six Americans goes hungry or wonders where the next meal will come from. That's a reality of life in the United States today. But another fact of life in this country is that people and organizations get together to tackle such problems and to help their fellow Americans. To combat hunger, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 22nd annual food drive on Saturday, May 10. Using the unparalleled postal networks, letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes. It is the nation's largest single-day food drive, and is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Last year, letter carriers collected 74.4 million pounds of food donations along their postal routes, the second-highest amount since the NALC's food drive began in 1992. That brought the total to nearly 1.3 billion pounds for… Saturday, May 14, 2016. For more info visit www.nalc.org.

Sepulveda Basin Off Leash Dog Park Community Meeting

A new Park Advisory Board has been formed for the Sepulveda Basin Dog Park. The Advisory Board was formed so that people who use the Dog Park can meet with Recreation and Parks Officials and help shape the park's future uses, maintenance, and voice needs or concerns of the community. The Park Advisory Board met for the first time Jan. 18 and will meet every third Tuesday of the month at Balboa Recreation Center. The Sepulveda Dog Park is a very important resource for our community, offering dog owners a chance to let their canine friends get exercise in a big open space and have important social play with other dogs. We helped the users of the park form the Park Advisory Board as part of our support for the park and its users and to help ensure it remains clean, safe and well maintained. National Armed Forces Day

National Holidays Armed Forces Day is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, is part of Armed Forces Week. It was with the idea for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country that President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish this single holiday. The single day celebration then stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. It was on August 31, 1949, that Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force Days. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held to celebrate the first National Armed Forces Day held on May 20, 1950. 1962 – President John F. Kennedy established Armed Forces Day as an official holiday. The United States longest running city-sponsored Armed Forces Day Par… Saturday, May 21, 2016. Flag Day

National Holidays National Flag Day is celebrated annually in the United States on June 14. This day commemorates adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. On National Flag Day, Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents. Our independence and unity as a nation is represented by our flag. The flag has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and is flown proudly. Betsy Ross is given credit, by many, for creating the first American flag. Since 1977, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times. For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect. In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4. President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959. Seventeen year old Robert G. Heft of Ohio is credited with designing the 50 star American flag. Of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, his was chosen. Many people have died protecting our country. On National Flag Day, raise the flag and fly it proudly. N… Tuesday, June 14, 2016. For more info visit nationaldaycalendar.com.
