Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance

National Holidays In memory of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, each year in the United States we observe Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. On October 25, 2001, the U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved. Resolution 71 requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day”. President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). On this day, it is asked by the President, that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House and on all United States government buildings and establishments at home and abroad. The President has also asked Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M.(Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He also strongly encourages Americans to use the Corporation for National and Community Serv… Sunday, September 11, 2016. For more info visit nationaldaycalendar.com.

POW/MIA Recognition Day

National Holidays The day we honor the our former prisoners of wars and the memories of the tens of thousands of service members from all wars still listed as missing in action. So, for our POWs and MIAs - for the ultimate sacrifice so many of them made in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam in the name of freedom - take a few minutes Friday to remember them. Give the VFW post near you a call to see what they have planned. National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established by an Act of Congress with the passage of Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act. This day is one of the six days that Federal Law requires the POW/MIA Flag be flown at all places designated by the U.S, Secretary of Defense. Sepulveda Basin Off Leash Dog Park Community Meeting

A new Park Advisory Board has been formed for the Sepulveda Basin Dog Park. The Advisory Board was formed so that people who use the Dog Park can meet with Recreation and Parks Officials and help shape the park's future uses, maintenance, and voice needs or concerns of the community. The Park Advisory Board met for the first time Jan. 18 and will meet every third Tuesday of the month at Balboa Recreation Center. The Sepulveda Dog Park is a very important resource for our community, offering dog owners a chance to let their canine friends get exercise in a big open space and have important social play with other dogs. We helped the users of the park form the Park Advisory Board as part of our support for the park and its users and to help ensure it remains clean, safe and well maintained.
