Opening reception for “Sand, Soda, & a Twist of Lime”

arts and exhibits Reception: Saturday, May 17, 2-4 p.m. On display: May 9-July 19 Works by 38 outstanding contemporary glass artists are on display in the Canyon Gallery May 9- July 19 in this show that includes works representing virtually all types of contemporary art glass, from blown vessels to architectural panels and fused glass. Professional glass artists throughout the state have been invited to show work that pushes the limits of glass technology and demonstrates how glass has evolved from craft to fine art. The show’s title, “Sand, Soda & a Twist of Lime,” is based on a formula for glass, a medium that combines with extreme heat and creativity to create colorful, light-infused works of art. The show is a natural match for the sun-filled Canyon Gallery. Go Club for Kids & Teens

kid's events Learn to play the ancient and mysterious Asian board game known as Go. Kids and teens ages 5 to 18 come weekly to experience the magic and beauty of Go and to make new friends from many different cultures. Go boards are provided and take-home sets made of paper are available for free. The weekly club is open to all levels of players, including beginners. Go ratings from AGA tournaments for players who have participated are available online and are updated weekly. The game was developed 4000 years ago in China, with rules so simple they can be taught in a few minutes – but it can take a lifetime to master the game. Conundrum Duo - Library Concert Series

concert series Classical guitarist Carey Harwood and tenor Robert Glaubitz, who in their performances usually emphasize interaction and communication with their audiences, began as a team in 2006 and have since shared the stage at many venues, including the New York City Duo Fest and with the Colorado Mahlerfest. Last year the pair won both “First Place” and “Audience Favorite” at the Bruce E. Ekstrand Competition. “Between Two Worlds: Memorializing the Lost Men from the Class of 42J” (a documentary by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Aaron Weisblatt)

main library This documentary is introduced in person by Fredric Arnold. During World War II, Arnold was a 21-year old P-38 fighter pilot who flew 50 combat missions in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He is currently the only living member of his original group of 14 fighter pilots, and is the author of the bestselling book Doorknob Five Two, a vivid and personal account of the P-38 fighter pilots’ experiences in the war. The documentary “Between Two Worlds: Memorializing the Lost Men from the Class of 42J,” follows the story of Arnold’s year-long search to find the families of the young men who were killed during World War II. Using interviews, archival film footage and stylized readings from “Doorknob Five Two,” the documentary by filmmaker Aaron Weisblatt is ultimately a tribute and act of gratitude to the men who gave their lives, and to the families who suffered the loss of their loved ones. “Talking Tombstones of Boulder County and Colorado” - Columbia Cemetery program with Mary Reilly-McNellan

carnegie branch Established in 1870, Columbia Cemetery was the first permanent cemetery in the city of Boulder, Colorado. Situated on 10.5 acres at Ninth and Pleasant streets, the cemetery is a virtual "Who's Who" of early Boulder – a historic, cultural, and artistic resource containing the remains of many of our city's founders and pioneers. In 1997, Columbia Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mary Reilly-McNellan is the preservationist for the cemetery. She has worked with the professionally-trained Columbia Cemetery Conservation Corps volunteer group to perform conservation work on hundreds of grave markers. Over the Moon Ovations: A Showcase for the Passions, Creativity and Wisdom of Women in their Fifties and Beyond

kid's events Learn to play the ancient and mysterious Asian board game known as Go. Kids and teens ages 5 to 18 come weekly to experience the magic and beauty of Go and to make new friends from many different cultures. Go boards are provided and take-home sets made of paper are available for free. The weekly club is open to all levels of players, including beginners. Go ratings from AGA tournaments for players who have participated are available online and are updated weekly.
