Centuries of Progress: American World's Fairs 1853-1982
What do the telephone, the Ferris Wheel, a 28,000-pound typewriter, and nylon stockings have in common? They were just a few of the thousands of products, curiosities, and inventions that made their debut at one of 17 World's Fairs that took place on America soil between 1853 and 1982. Visitors will enjoy more than 125 objects, photographs, and ephemera that detail progress, promotion, and public response.

Approximately 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, monster trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, monster trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster trucks can fly up to125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air.
The event will feature the return of Grave Digger driven by Randy Brown, Turtle, Stone Crusher, Mopar Magic, Crushstation, Instigator and Thrasher driven by Connecticut ’s own Pat Summa. Trucks are subject to change without notice. The show includes Quad Wars and more exciting action to be announced.

Culver Modisette enlisted in the Navy at age 17, hunting German U-boats until the war’s end, and then spent four glorious years at Dartmouth College. He worked for two decades as an advertising/PR executive until opening an outdoor sports business devoted to ecology sports, such as hiking and canoeing. Now retired, Modisette is the president of the Northern Connecticut Land Trust, as well as a respected lacrosse coach. He also tree farms and breeds Labradors in his spare time.
While working at his outdoor sports business, Modisette took various trips throughout Canada and the United States, and over the years, came to admire and sympathize with the Athabaskan Indian people living in the Arctic Circle area of rural Alaska. Modisette’s historical novel,

This is an AKC sanctioned AB/O/JSHW (All breed, obedience, junior showmanship) event that draws more than 1,000 entries with approximately 150 different breeds of dogs from all over the country and Canada represented at the show. These are champion show dogs that compete all over the country. Visitors get to go backstage to meet the dogs and their owners and handlers. Learn more about your favorite breed or ask questions about dog breeds in which you are interested. In the obedience trials, we’ll have some amazing dogs that will awe you with their ability to follow commands. There are also some vendors with unique pet products at the show. Some of the proceeds of the show are used to fund scholarships awarded each year to two pre-veterinary students at the University of Connecticut. This is a great family event.

Winter Vacation Camp
February 20th-24th, 9 am to 3 pm
A full day camp program offered to 5 to 11 year olds. Parents are welcome to sign up for individual days or the whole week. Each day children will explore a topic related to the botanical and natural world. A healthy snack will be provided by the Arboretum each day however each child is responsible for their own peanut free lunch. Children should dress appropriately for the weather as we will be spending time outside each day. $350 per week/$75 per day (Non Members), $300 per week/$65 per day (Members). “20th Annual Associate Artist Exhibition” and “A Contemporary Look”
Lyme Art Association’s 20th Annual Associate Artist Exhibition of landscape, portrait and still life paintings by Associate Artist members will be on view in the Association’s Cooper/Ferry, South and Cole galleries through February 25, 2012.
In addition, the Association is pleased to present the 3rd Annual "A Contemporary Look," a special invitation-only exhibition of progressive representational artwork by regional artists. This year's featured artists include painters Jaclyn Conley, Karen Sorenson, and Deirdre Kline. Equestrian sculpture fabricated in steel by Marcia Spivak will also be displayed.
