BLACKLIGHT
Blacklight: In May, our focus will be Go-Go and the Junkyard sound of DC, but of course we will still be playing plenty of Funk, Jazz, and anything else that gets the crowd moving throughout the night. We normally start of slow to set the mood then bring up the beat as the night goes on.
The idea for Blacklight started because I had noticed that many 80s nights often ignore a lot of music of the decade. It’s fairly common to hear Michael Jackson during one of these events, but one may not hear many other black artists during the night, even though there were many people of color creating breakthrough music during that time.
Blacks have often been at the forefront of musical revolutions, and I felt there was a need to explore some of the overlooked and lesser known artists as well as better known individuals in a dance night. Blacklight is a means to celebrate the work of many Black artists who have contributed to the evolving sound of music through the years.
