Scholar’s Seminar on Modernism
Art History
What was Modernism? Was it a style, an ideal, a politics, a form of life or none of these things? And what about its central concepts like authorship, realism, truth, teleology, medium specificity, and expression? With the growing sense that Postmodernism is in decline, we might begin to get a clearer sense of what Modernism was and what its aims were. This symposium asks whether Modernism is dead for good (and for the best), or whether its death was announced prematurely.
Discussion format: Nell Andrew (UGA), Todd Cronan (Emory), Lisa Florman (Ohio State), Elizabeth Goodstein (Emory), Sarah Hamill (Oberlin), Gordon Hughes (Rice), Dalia Judowitz (Emory), Andrew Mitchell (Emory), Charles Palermo (William and Mary), Michael Schreyach (Trinity), and others.
Seminar discussion will revolve around pre-circulated papers. If you would like to take part in the seminar discussion, please contact Todd Cronan in advance of the event at todd.cronan@emory.edu

Carlos Reads Book Club reads Hesiod's Theogony
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Tricky Titans, bundles of nymphs, and a revolving-door account of divine succession fill the thousand-plus lines of Hesiod’s Theogony, a mythical account of how the world came to be— and how a poet got his voice. Led by Dr. Sandra Blakely, Associate Professor in the Classics Department, readers will dive into the poetry and mythology of this late eighth-century BC poem, considering its historical context and Near Eastern influences; the ritual realities and local cults of the gods; and contemporary hypotheses for the meaning of the poem, preserved from the earliest boundary of the Greek literary tradition. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118.
Fee: $25 for Carlos members; $35 for non-members and includes the cost of the book.

Lecture: The Dark Side: A History of Violence in Tibetan Buddhism
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Jacob Dalton, Assistant Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley discusses wrathful deities in Tibetan Buddhism in a lecture titled The Dark Side: A History of Violence in Tibetan Buddhism.
From images of peaceful monks meditating on mountainsides, to the Dalai Lama teaching compassion toward Tibet's Chinese oppressors, Tibetan Buddhism is widely portrayed as a religion of non-violence. Yet a closer look at the art of Tibet reveals quite another image. Witness the demonic beings dancing upon corpses, the skulls filled with blood, the fearsome weapons; this is a far more complex and ambivalent tradition than many imagine, one that at once condemns and embraces violence. In this talk, Dalton traces the history of Tibet's ambivalent relationship to violence. By focusing on three vignettes, drawn from Tibetan myth, history, and geography, he explores the disconcerting similarities between evil demons and the wrathful buddhas that tame them, great Buddhist masters' expressions of…

Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
Film Studies
"Sweet Smell of Success" (Alexander Mackendrick; Hill-Hecht-Lancaster/UA, 1957) (1.66:1, 96 min.) Written by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman; music by Elmer Bernstein and the Chico Hamilton Quartet; starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Cinematography by James Wong Howe.
"Sweet Smell of Success" was dubbed by one period reviewer “one of the most cynical movies ever made.” The steely stillness of Burt Lancaster’s performance as the Walter Winchell-based columnist J.J. Hunsecker may have justly earned him a place in AFI’s top 50 movie villains but Tony Curtis’ endlessly ingratiating and deliciously craven press agent Sidney Falco is the heart of this black-hearted movie: That is, if you don’t count Howe’s rendering of New York City itself. Voted onto the National Film Registry in 1993.

Kronos Quartet with Alim Qasimov Ensemble
Music
The collaboration between Kronos Quartet and the Alim Qasimov Ensemble produces powerful pieces drawn from the repertoire of Azerbaijani ashiqs—oral-tradition singer-songwriters whose song texts portray, often with wry humor and searing irony, the power of love and the pain of separation. The legendary singer Alim Qasimov is called “one of the most thrilling, unashamedly emotional performers on the planet” (Robin Denselow, the "Guardian").

Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Emory scholars Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao lead readers through The Ramayana.
One of India's two major pan-Indian epics, the Ramayana has had a long and sustained history in the development of civilizational values in South Asia. The Ramayana has multiple regional language versions, both literary and oral, in addition to a number of literary forms in Sanskrit itself. It's popularity and influence cannot be over estimated. Its characters are larger than life, occupy an imagined timeless past, and at the same time, they are household names, as familiar as next door neighbors speaking to the present. Episodes from the Ramayana are represented in every conceivable medium: poetry, drama, dance, song, sculpture, painting and film. Since the text of the full Ramayana is too long for our book group, Drs. Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes.…

T-Men (1947)
Film Studies
"T-Men" (Anthony Mann, Eagle-Lion, 1947) (1.37:1, 92 min.) Produced by Aubrey Schenck; written by John Higgins and Virginia Kellogg; starring Dennis O’Keefe, Wallace Ford and Alfred Ryder. Cinematography by John Alton. Preserved by the Library of Congress.
The first of five films to team Mann and Alton, this low budget, “case-file” crime drama became a major hit for the young Eagle-Lion studio. Though initially received as a new high in location-based realism, today Alton’s low-key lighting effects virtually define film noir visuals at their most stylized, expressionistic extreme.

Lecture: Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Gloria Ferrari Pinney, Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Art at Harvard University delivers the annual Phi Beta Kappa Lecture, Dancing at the Solstice: The Maidens on the Acanthus Column at Delphi.
In the 330s BCE the Athenians dedicated to Pythian Apollo at Delphi an extraordinary monument: a gigantic column wrapped in acanthus leaves, on top of which are three dancing maidens who hold aloft over their heads a large bronze tripod. Why this and why now? The years are a particularly dramatic period in Athenian history, one that opens in 338 with the crushing defeat of the Athenian and Boeotian forces at Chaeronea and the prospect of a Macedonian invasion. Nearly 120 years since its discovery, the meaning of the Column and the occasion for its dedication remain hotly debated topics. This lecture traces the disparate elements of this assemblage to parallels in visual and poetic imagery and identifies in it a representation of a cosmic landmark that is relevant to both Helios Apollo and to its…

Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $5…

Rob Walker is the former Consumed columnist for the New York Times Magazine, the author of Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, and the founder of The Unconsumption Project. In an informal conversation, Mr. Walker and Bobbi Patterson of Emory’s Department of Religion, will discuss one of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism—that suffering is caused by desire—and the complexity of navigating a culture in which “desire” is manufactured by product designers and advertising agencies, and driven by our own consumerism.
This program is co-sponsored by Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives.

Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Ramayana
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Joyce Flueckiger and Narayan Rao will lead readers through a retelling of the epic, particular episodes from various regional language version, and an examination of visual representations of these episodes. Registration is required by calling 404.727.6118. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $5…

Baby Doll (1956)
Film Studies
"Baby Doll" (Elia Kazan; Warner Bros. 1956) (1.66:1, 114 min.) Produced by Elia Kazan; screenplay by Tennessee Williams; starring Karl Malden, Carroll Baker, Eli Wallach. Cinematography by Boris Kaufman. Preservation funded by The Film Foundation. Print courtesy of UCLA Film and Television Archives.
This Tennessee Williams-scripted, Elia Kazan-directed black comedy-drama sensation (Variety wanted to know how it got past the Code) made overnight film stars out of Baker and Wallach in their first starring roles as a teenage Mississippi Delta bride still sleeping in a crib and her would-be seducer. Williams, Baker and supporting actress Mildred Dunnock all earned Academy Award nominations, as did Boris Kaufman’s cinematography.

Laszlo-Excalibur Lecture
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Jeffrey Hurwit, Professor of Art History and Classics at the University of Oregon, delivers this year’s Laszlo-Excalibur Lecture titled The Shipwreck of Odysseus: Problems of Myth and Narrative in Late Geometric Art.
In this talk, Professor Hurwit, focusing on a well-known eighth-century BCE vase-painting that may show the Shipwreck of Odysseus, defends the now controversial premise that myth was the subject of some Late Geometric Greek artists. He also suggests that the most important thing we can do with a Late Geometric scene is not to assign it to one of the standard categories of “myth” or “genre” or “the generalized heroic,” but to new categories that transcend those distinctions. He emphasizes the exceptionalism, variety, and originality of Late Geometric imagery and the Late Geometric artist’s interest in the description of both the heroic and real worlds.
The John Laszlo, M.D. Excalibur Lecture was established through the generosity of Dr. Laszlo's family and friends in honor of his retirement…

Body of Water
Dance
Hundreds of women, representing a broad spectrum of cultures and disciplines, are invited to walk in a structured improvisation and experience the dynamics of flow. This “happening” is an opportunity to communicate, through simple walking, the non-verbal ways in which women listen, connect, lead, follow, understand, and negotiate. Think of it as a different kind of flash mob. This work will co-exist with John Grade’s Piedmont Divide sculpture.

Gates of Silence
Interdisciplinary
Composer and singer Susan Botti performs her original chamber work
“Gates of Silence” with Vanderbilt University’s Blakemore Trio.
“Gates of Silence” connects three independent pieces, inspired by Virgil's “Aeneid.” Each is a passage that echoes with relevance today—in our fallen cities, in our physical passages, and in our personal interactions with each other and with our destinies. There is a reiterated rhythm of loss, but also one of renewal, hope and continuation.
The final passage sets poetry by National Book Award finalist, Linda Gregerson. She was awarded the Pushcart Prize for her poem “Dido Refuses to Speak,” commissioned by Botti for “Gates of Silence.”
Susan Botti is a Coca-Cola Artist in Residence at Emory University.

Black Narcissus (1947)
Film Studies
"Black Narcissus" (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; The Archers, 1947) (1.37:1, 100 min.) Produced by Powell & Pressburger; written by Powell and Pressburger from the novel by Rumer Godden; starring Deborah Kerr, Flora Robson, Kathleen Byron, David Farrar, Sabu and Jean Simmons. Cinematography by Jack Cardiff.
This India set-film about a group of nuns unprepared for the overripe sensuousness engulfing their isolated mountain convent, was shot entirely in Britain’s Pinewood Studios and the garden of a retired army officer in West Sussex that contained the appropriate foliage. Director Powell felt that this was the only way to achieve the complete unity in visual design that he envisioned. The results were spectacular, with the film earning Alfred Junge a pair of Academy Awards for color art direction and set design as well as one for Jack Cardiff’s color cinematography.

Celebrate the publication of Dr. Bonna Daix Wescoat's new book, The Temple of Athena at Assos, by Oxford University Press. Dr. Wescoat will discuss the ancient Greek temple, located in modern Turkey, which was built in a city that had no prior monumental tradition in either architecture of sculpture, so that the entire building constitutes an exercise in architectural invention. She proposes a new reconstruction of the building, and situates the Temple within the formative development of monumental architecture in Archaic Greece. The Night of the Iguana
Theater Emory
Theater Emory celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Tennessee Williams with his hugely entertaining and powerful 1961 Broadway hit.
Defrocked for committing heresy and fornication in a single week, a dissolute minister arrives at a seedy Mexican hotel presided over by a lusty innkeeper. Rev. Shannon tries to outrun his past, but simmering passions threaten to collide with dangerous secrets.
Throw in a saintly spinster, a teenage sexpot, a dying poet and a busload of Baptist ladies from Texas - and the result is Tennessee Williams at his sultry, explosive best.

Nix Mann Endowed Lecture
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Dr. Sidney Babcock, Curator and Head of the Department of Ancient Near Eastern Seals and Tablets and the Morgan Library and Museum in New York, delivers this year's Nix Mann Lecture titled "A Seal Upon Thine Heart:" Ancient Art in Cylinder Seals from Mesopotamia, ca. 3500-330 BC. Perhaps the smallest objects ever produced by sculptors, cylinder seals were carved in intricate detail with simple tools on a variety of semiprecious stones. In antiquity, their value was amuletic and served to identify the owner. For us, today, the designs carved on these seals represent the largest body of visual information to have survived from ancient Mesopotamia. Dr. Babcock's lecture will show the changing styles of the various historical periods as well as discuss the political, religious, and social issues that influenced the scenes depicted on the seals themselves. Cylinder seals provide a continuous artistic and chronological sequence for over three thousand years: they are crucial to our understanding of the ancient…

Out of Sight (1998)
Film Studies
"Out of Sight" (Steven Soderbergh; Universal, 1998) (1.85:1, 123 min.) Produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher; written by Scott Frank from a novel by Elmore Leonard; starring George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Catherine Keener, Steve Zahn and Albert Brooks. Cinematography by Elliot Davis.
Critics who had been wondering if Soderbergh’s "Sex, Lies and Videotape" had been a fluke were won over again by this, the best film yet from an Elmore Leonard source. Soderbergh’s light touch in his offbeat mixing of unsettling drama with classic romantic comedy (the couple’s extended “meet cute” is in a car trunk), is only partially a function of the relaxed performances he drew from an ensemble cast that includes unbilled cameos from Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson.

Workshop for Children
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Surrealist artists wanted to free the imagination and used dreams, images, and ideas that arose spontaneously in their minds as a way of creating art that told a story that arose without being consciously directed or controlled. Among the works in the special exhibition Embodied Seeing: Modernist Works on Paper is a series of printed postcards of images made by Surrealist artists Magritte and Miro, as well as others. Enter the world and language of dreams where the ordinary becomes extraordinary with Atlanta artist Julie Jones Boulee as she guides children to create Surrealist postcards. For ages 8 to 13 years. Fee $12 for Carlos Museum members; $15 for non-members. Registration is required by contacting Nina West at 404.727.0519 or nwest@emory.edu.

Carlos Reads Book Club reads The Oresteia
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Louise Pratt, Professor of Classics, leads readers through The Oresteia, a trilogy of Greek tragedies by Aeschylus about the fall of the House of Atreus. The Oresteia is the only surviving trilogy of the many that were performed on the Athenian stage and is important in reflecting a new civic conception of justice central to Athenian democracy at its height. It includes the most poetic of all surviving tragedies, the Agamemnon, and the earliest examples of those perennial favorites of drama: two murders and a trial. With two truly great female characters in Clytemnestra and Cassandra, The Oresteia repays rich rewards for those willing to confront its initial challenges. Fee: $35 for Carlos members; $50 for non-members and includes the cost of the book.
