FA to Broadway Musical Theater - at Fredericksburg Academy
Classes and Workshops
FA to Broadway Musical Theater Two-Week Camp (Rising Fifth through Rising Ninth Grades, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. runs through June 21): To be a performer on the biggest stages today, you have to be a “triple threat” – in other words, you have to sing beautifully, act powerfully, and dance competently! This summer camp led by FA alumni Natalie Ducharme-Barth and Jess Hoover is aimed toward those young people who want to improve their performance skills in any and all of these areas. Over the two-week period, students will get vocal coaching, acting classes, and dance lessons, with regular opportunities to perform for their peers. They will participate in daily activities that explore theatrical performance and go through a mock audition process in which they receive instant feedback. The week culminates in a full-scale production in FA’s Reed Theater in which all campers participate and share their talents with an audience.

Follow Me Robot Sciensational Workshop (Rising Fifth through Rising Ninth Grades, 9 a.m. to 12 noon): How would you like to build a robot that has four built-in microphones? It will detect the sound source and in turn it will move and turn accordingly. It is your own robot to build and take home. Wow! It starts flashing and plays Do-Re-Mi. Make it move the way you want it to move. It is so smart that it will move in its own routine if it does not get a signal in 1 minute. It will go to sleep if you do not issue any commands in 90 seconds. However, you can wake it up. Learn about the different gears and sensors as you build it. Get to build other robots working in groups. Join in our Sumo wrestling and obstacle course events with what you have built. See everything happening as you build. That’s the Sciensational way!

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site 2014 Exhibition Season
Artist Opportunities
More than sixty artists have created installations for Eastern State Penitentiary’s cellblocks and yards. Many of these installations were among the most successful programming the site has offered, and brought perspectives and approaches that would not have been possible in traditional historic site programming.
We seek installations that will explore Eastern State Penitentiary’s history, and evoke a broad range of emotions. We seek installations that will make connections between the complex history of this building and its legacy in current prison policies and conditions.
We want to humanize these difficult subjects with personal stories and distinct points of view. We want to hear new voices—voices that might emphasize the political or humorous or bluntly personal. We want our visitors to be challenged with provocative questions, and we’re prepared to face some provocative questions ourselves.
In short, we seek memorable, thought-provoking additions to our public programming, combined with true e…

The Kiernan Gallery - Alter Ego
Artist Opportunities
Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. There is a performative aspect to this genre. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, and able to choose how they would like to the world to see them. The photographer invites judgment and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the “second self” that appears when artist becomes subject.
For this exhibition, juror Stephen Sheffield will select up to 25 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 35 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced.

Whether you love telling stories or worry if your writing is “good enough,” we’ll practice writing all week and play with a variety of styles. Get inspired by the world around you from walks in the woods on FA’s campus or writing about your favorite thing to do. We’ll take a field trip to Alum Springs Park to search for creative ideas and to the amphitheater at the University of Mary Washington where our words can come alive on stage. There will be lots of time to study the masters too: the great writers known to all and the published writers who are your own age. Why not publish a story or poem yourself? We can do that too!

"Williamsburg Celebrates Contemporary Artist" is holding it's 4th Annual Williamsburg Celebrates Contemporary Artist.
If there are any artists out there that may be interested please send an email and they will get an application to you as soon as possible. Last year they had a great turnout both of artist and foot traffic! Their show this year will be on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. This happens to fall on parents weekend at The College of William and Mary which is great because this gives more foot traffic to the show plus the show is listed in the parents folders as “things to do”. The show is located in Merchants Square and runs down to Nassau Street. Last year they had approx. 50 artists participate.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Madison DeBord at this email address, mdebordbonner@gmail.com , or feel free to call the office at 757.221.0225. You may also contact Brandie Weiler, Co-Chair of Williamsburg Celebrates at bweiler@housingparterships.org for more information.
