Backyard Ecology: Audubon Orientation
Classes and Lectures
The history of land use in Pennsylvania and our embedded landscape practices have created a disconnect with nature. Many of these practices rely on chemicals and other means to maintain “pest free” environments, but that has only resulted in ecological imbalance. This course will explore the “deep rooted” relationships of soil, plants, and wildlife and how to re-establish these natural, self-sustaining systems on private property. Other topics to be discussed include the origins of exotic invasive species, the needs of particular bird and insect species, forest ecology, and hydrology.

Native Pollinators: Attracting Mason Bees
Classes and Lectures
Honeybees may be fascinating, but they’re not the only game in town! Mason bees are non- stinging, solitary native bees that evolved as primary pollinators of many northeastern spring-blooming plants. Unlike carpenter bees, which bore holes in wood structures to build their nests, mason bees inhabit existing narrow tube-shaped cavities created by other organisms and present in hollow stems. The decline of honeybees and the overall trend toward native gardening has increased interest in native bees. In this class, you’ll learn why adult mason bees are only active for one month each spring, why they pollinate certain plants better than honeybees, and how to ensure their presence in your garden each spring no matter how little space you have.
A ready-to-hang wood-block nest box is included in the course fee.

David bought a 1790’s farmhouse and the adjoining two acres in 1990. Over the years, he has created many gardens areas that he has planted in a naturalistic style to reflect the regional landscape. He has included the best plants and plant combinations that can survive the chilly winters and steamy summers typically found in our region. His gardens contain many collections such as galanthus, roses, hepaticas, cyclamen, euphorbias, arums, peonies, iris, and, his specialty, hellebores. Joins us as David provides tips and insights to all of those who are either starting a garden or who are in the process of improving and refining their garden.

Journal Writing Workshop
Classes and Lectures
The journal is one of the most effective tools
for enhancing self-growth and developing
creative potential. But most of us don’t use the
journal for all it can be: a mirror, a pathway,
or a safe space of discovery where loose ends
often miraculously come together. A personal
journal can provide a place to try on, and try
out, new patterns of expression and being.
This class is designed to debunk myths about
the “shoulds” and traditional “how-tos” of
journal-keeping, and to provide specific
exercises and options for journal-writing
creativity. The beautiful garden setting of the
Arboretum will be a terrific “trigger” for your
writing process. The instructor, Janet Ruth
Falon, M.L.A. has kept her own journal for
45 years and has taught journaling for more
than 20. Writing experience or expertise is not
needed. Please bring something to write
with and a notebook of your choice. This
class meets at the new Horticulture Center.

Tree Identification and Appreciation: Native Trees and Shrubs
Classes and Lectures
Native trees and shrubs, found on many properties, help create beautiful low maintenance landscapes while providing abundant wildlife habitat. Starting with trees and working from “the top down” helps us to understand which plant communities are characterized by the dominance of particular trees and shrubs. Understanding these relationships allows us to be able to reproduce native plant communities and create effective habitat gardens. In this overview of native Pennsylvania trees
you will learn how to identify them by examining flowers, bark, leaves and habit. Tree lover Ken LeRoy will take you on a tour of the Morris Arboretum focusing on native trees and shrubs and providing identification tips. He will discuss fruiting and flowering times and how these native plants are best used in the landscape. He will also talk about potentially invasive trees commonly used in the home landscape.

From Creek to Sewer: A History of Topographical Change in Philadelphia
Classes and Lectures
In this fascinating illustrated lecture, Adam Levine will uncover a part of Philadelphia’s history that few people ever think about, the drastic changes made in the city’s landscape since its founding in 1682. The most significant change was the systematic obliteration of almost all the city’s streams. Buried deep underground in pipes as large as 20 feet in diameter, these former streams, some of which had watersheds that covered thousands of acres, became main drainage arteries in the city’s 3,000 mile sewer system. These massive alterations to the landscape, undertaken over two centuries, have environmental repercussions that are still being felt today. Adam Levine has worked for the Philadelphia Water Department since 1998, researching the city’s watersheds as well as its sewage and stormwater drainage systems.

Beer Tasting and Dinner
Classes and Lectures
Join us for the Arboretum’s third annual beer tasting dinner celebrating Philadelphia’s designation as “Brussels on the Schuylkill.” Beer is for the Belgians what wine is for the French. To celebrate this beer making tradition, come and sample a variety of specially selected flavorful beers that will be paired with complementary food. You will also have the rare chance to try some favorite dishes that use beer as an ingredient. One of the beers we will try is Palm. First brewed in the early 1900s as an alternative to pilsners and lagers, Palm has become the number one selling amber beer in Belgium. This beer represents the best of European beer making and marries the English tradition of pale ales with the skills of the Belgian brew masters. We will also try Rodenbach Grand Cru. With its distinctive reddish color and wood aging, it has been compared to Madeira wine. Another favorite is Steenbrugge Tripel. This is a classic abbey beer with triple fermentation and a subtle hops and herbal taste. Come taste deli…

Classes and Lectures
Like any natural area in this well- watered part of the country, Philadelphia was once laced with a complex system of streams and their tributaries, many of which are now hidden underground. To provide level land for new homes, protect the health of our citizens, and provide drainage for
expanding neighborhoods, city engineers in the 19th and 20th centuries re-channeled most of these waterways into massive sewers that now run far beneath the streets. Join Adam Levine on this fascinating bus tour that will follow the winding course of the Wingohocking Creek. Once a major tributary to Frankford Creek that provided power for many factories, the Wingohocking now runs in a sewer that drains several neighborhoods, including Mt. Airy, Germantown, Olney, Feltonville, and Juniata. We will stop at points of interest along the way, including the Awbury Arboretum and Belfield, home of Charles Wilson Peale, on the LaSalle University campus. You’ll also learn more about watersheds and how you can help protect the streams…

Horseshoe Crabs, Shorebirds and Nesting Species at Fortescue Beach and Gandy’s Beaches
Classes and Lectures
Fortescue Beach, in Cumberland County, New
Jersey, is an exceptionally glorious slice of
shoreline and a great place to see birds. We will
be on hand to observe a variety of birds during
their spring migration. On this beach the New
Jersey Audubon bands birds and counts
horseshoe crabs. This is a great time of year to
see these crabs whose small green-blue eggs are
a major food source for migrating shore birds
like ruddy turnstones, red knots, semipalmated
sandpipers and sanderlings. For millions of
birds that travel thousands of miles, the chance
to stop here to eat and regain strength is
critical to their survival. Gandy’s Beach is
considered one of the top ten sites for numbers
of shorebirds on the Delaware Bay during
spring migration. The area surrounding
Gandy’s Beach Preserve is largely undeveloped.
It provides essential salt marsh and over onehalf
mile of beachfront to experience the
horseshoe crab and shorebird phenomenon.
We will leave by bus from the Morris
Arboretum. Park…

Classes and Lectures
On this trip you will visit two beautiful
Delaware Valley gardens and tour them with
their creators. David Culp is a sales
representative for Sunny Border Nurseries, a
nationally known lecturer, and a hands-on
gardener. The garden he has created in
Downingtown includes mixed borders for sun
and shade and combines native and exotic
plants in a naturalistic design. There are rock,
woodland, and vegetable gardens. A walled
garden, the ruins of an old carriage house,
features many troughs and containers full of
unusual plants. Queenie Northrup’s home
features a lovely hillside garden that slopes
away from the house with a series of levels
defined by stone walls. She and her husband,
who do all of the gardening themselves, have
created their version of a Pennsylvania country
garden that includes a lily pond and a new
garden area along a country lane.

garden contains an effective blend of
traditional features such as rose arbors, a pond
and fountains with eclectic planting designs.
The next visit will be a Civil War-era house
surrounded by distinct garden rooms, all
planted with modern aesthetics. We will finish
the morning with a visit to a third garden that
surrounds a 1954-built house intensely
planted for multi-seasonal interest. All three
gardens in the heart of Chestnut Hill illustrate
using the key elements of stone, water and
native plants in very different ways. We will

Restoring our Native Ecosystems
Classes and Lectures
Douglas Tallamy, Professor and Chair, University of Delaware Dept. of Wildlife Ecology, Larry Weaner , Principal, Larry Weaner Landscape Design Associates, Join us for this one-day conference as we reenvision the future of the suburban landscapes that surround us. Dr. Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home, will explore ways to increase biodiversity in our landscapes and create healthy ecosystems. A key element to creating a diverse landscape is selecting native plants over exotics when planning a design. Homeowners and landscape designers frequently select plants based on the beauty of abundant flowers and colorful fruits. The importance of plants as a food source for wildlife is often disregarded. This results in a food source loss for insects and as well as the wildlife that feed on those insects. To learn more about growing and designing with native plants, landscape designer Larry Weaner, will provide practical advice on incorporating native plants into our landscapes with some concrete examples from…
