Using Japan’s love affair with bugs as a frame, the film uncovers perspectives that can transform our ideas about nature, beauty, and daily life.
Presented in collaboration with American Film Institute's Project 20/20, Japanese Information and Cultural Center, and Environmental Film Festival.

Maximum Effect from Minimum Means: Josef Albers
One-Time Events
When Josef Albers came to the United States from Germany in 1933, he brought art and ideas grounded in utopian idealism and pure abstraction that he explored and shared through his career, including his tenure at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in the 1930s and 1940s and at Yale University in the 1950s. Senior curator Valerie Fletcher examines how this artist tirelessly pursued the elusive subtleties of materials, form, and, most notably, color, and inspired countless students with his expertise, insight, and enthusiasm.

Wavelength: Independent Film Series
One-Time Events
(1967, 45 min, directed by Michael Snow) Michael Snow’s landmark avant-garde film has been described by the artist as “a summation of my nervous system, religious inklings, and aesthetic ideas.” Set in a New York loft space, the film subtly shifts between drama and the sheer duration of documentation, pure simplicity, and utter complexity. Rarely screened, Wavelength is a must-see for any serious cinephile.

Lunch Break: Independent Film Series
One-Time Events
(2008, 80 min, directed by Sharon Lockhart) Several years in the making, Lockhart's film -- set in the mile-long corridor of Bath Iron Works, a ship building firm in Maine -- depicts previously unexamined dimensions of labor and leisure. The ponderous gaze of the camera follows forty-two blue-collar workers, documenting their off-the-clock moments. Set to a soundtrack developed by Becky Allen, Lunch Break offers an unforgettable narrative experience that evokes performance art.
