2012 African Art House Film Festival: The Nine Muses

One-Time Events The Nine Muses (2011, 94 min, Alaska and archival material, directed by John Akomfrah) This beautiful and enigmatic documentary film mixes archival material and original scenes, and considers mass migration to post-war Britain from 1949 to 1970 as a parallel to Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Africa Underground

One-Time Events Haitian American violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (a.k.a. DBR) premieres a new work for solo violin and electronics. Inspired by Ousmane Sow’s powerful sculpture Toussaint Louverture et la vieille esclave, DBR is joined by Lord Jamar, legendary emcee, producer, actor, and director and member of the hip-hop group Brand Nubian.
